ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead discussion thread

Recommended Posts

FLIR, backpack, afghan theme is all good, but the game really needs to be polished for it to become really successful.

9/10 complaints of this game are about the bugs. Hopefully some kind of community AO beta will help iron them out sooner.

Yes BIS need to do a community beta this time around for Arrowhead, instead of just releasing it as a beta. :p :D

BIS please take your time in developement there shouldn't be too much pressure to release it this time around since you've just released Arma II.

Tell your publishers to give you the time you need to make a great experience out of the box with little flaws or bugs.

I really hope this bag system works this could be fun! Also really hope that BIS promises to deliver on the engine changes and optimizations, this game would be awesome if those werent the main problems with the game.

Good Luck BIS Dev Team.

If all thing done correctly I dont think there would be any problem for it to be use in ARMA2, after all, it is already working in VBS2 VTK

that said, unless BI did something horriblily wrong on porting things from basicly the same engine to a newer version of the engine, FLIR should work pretty good

doesn't help if the FLIR works and the rest doesn't :)

I agree. I'm not sure of what the reason for such a rush is, but if the plan is to release more versions in the future I would say there should be a bit more focus on quality, since the code will be reused. Some more time wouldn't hurt

I hope they will do something to improve the firearm reports in this game. Stacking/looping single .wav files is so 1999. Even the new arcade game Wolfenstein has more realistic weapon effects than ArmA 2.

some thing like this?

class Single : Mode_SemiAuto {
		begin1[] = {"ca\sounds\weapons\rifles\M4A_single1", 1.77828, 1, 1000};
		begin2[] = {"ca\sounds\weapons\rifles\M4A_single2", 1.77828, 1, 1000};
		soundBegin[] = {"begin1", 0.5, "begin2", 0.5};

so true. That's the question I actually wanted to ask: is it working?

Arma 2 was my first game of this series, and I'm about to give up; the bugs and the lack of documentation are quite frustrating. I basically stopped playing, and I will wait for the next patches/versions or Dragon Rising, hoping that one of them will be nice. I'm starting to doubt though.

lack of documentation ?

huge manual not enough (retail and steam version (pdf) etc.)?

community wiki with all the basic and non basic info ?

forums for modding?

community editing sites like ofpec and mapfact and so on?

all yes!

dwarden,how about the addition of a complete and translated guide to the editor in the box for +5euro?I mean,I spend more time searching info around here and there than playing the game....and tbh the main target of arma serie is an adult audience(people that works or studies hardly);consider also the increase of user made missions/scenarios that this would add to us all..

Mission editor guide could make up a book as big as the whole Harry Potter series.

in multilanguage.And not,for noobs like me it is not "enough".This stuff needs high accuracy,if you misread a dot you are done.Also,reading a book and editing at the same time makes the whole thing easier.

p.s. someone can say:"Aelin noob,you can play in window-mode,do you know?"No,I dont cos my pc,and the ones of the 90% of my clan mates(30 ppls),crashes hard if I alt-tab.

There is Mr. Murrays Editing guide...nearly everything you need to now is in there. The rest is "learning by doing".

You can extract other missions and look at them. You can try things out. Hell, I remember OFP times when there was no documentation at all.:cool:

Mr. Murray Editing guide of ARMA 1 got 333 pages ;)

yeah i downloaded it right after I bought arma 2,but it lacks in accessibility due to:1)it isnt step by step(noob 's step:o);2)it requires a deep aknowledgement in english.Here in italy(as in the whole no-commonwealth area)there is not many people who can handle it.

Mr kklownboy,your idea is fun but i dont want strangers in my home:bounce3:.

It would be an extra content which I'd pay for(with the majority of the people I know)and it is just a personal opinion/suggestion,and pay attention I dont say there is an absolute lack of info from bis but a lack of effective one.And take in mind that there are out there a lot of people who doesnt deal with this forum/guides,etc for many different reasons,then they miss the big part of this "game"(I dont like to call arma 2 simply a game)and deal with it as a normal game

Ok enough - this thread is about the upcoming expansion Operation Arrowhead and not mission editing. There is a whole section in this forum for that, and if you ask questions there you will get answers. I know there are more italians here so you could even get things explained if needed. Then you have even more forums like OFPEC and Armaholic.com that also have years of editing knowledge packed in their forums. Just go to the correct sections and search + ask. Youll become a editing star soon enough. But this is the wrong thread. It gets hard to get info on this particular expansion with pages of editing questions.

Fair enough. So let me give an example of something that would be nice to have in the documentation of Operation Arrowhead:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=78578

I might post something related to editing/scripting, but I don't want to exaggerate :). As correctly stated, this is not the focus of the thread. Besides, I want to look better at this editing guide.

The problem with editing is also that it's quite complex, so documentation is a bit more difficult to write.

Anyway, I must admit that I could have been unclear. I didn't mean that there is no documentation at all.

Sorry to continue bringing this thread off-topic, but for the original Operation Flashpoint I have a vague memory of step-by-step introductions to simple mission making being included on the CD. This is something that I think would be very welcome to many who are new to the community. Failing that, Mr. Jan Prazak could surely make some videos going through the basics of mission editing step-by-step, with a link to those videos included in the manual for OA and an eventual "gold edition" of ARMA 2. The community is a great resource for tutorials, but to me, it would seem that appropriate to include a very basic guide, or in the least, information on where to find such a guide to the in-game editor with future releases.

I didn't get a HUGE manual with my purchase. All I got was a little pamphlet that briefly outlines some of the features. Even the damn "complex" commands are briefly explained , leaving it up to the player to enjoy the experience of what shows up when you press "7" .

Also the key commands are spread all over the pamphlet , not in one simple concise table. Worth getting ArmA1 just for that.

You mean Wiki' "S" and just try an find an answer to a specific question in those. I have a hell of a lot more luck using "Google" than any of the purported "wealth of knowledge" sites.

The vast majority of the "bugs" being complained about pertain to scripting errors in the campaign and other BI modules. Hell , BI invented the script and can't get it right , how in the hell are we supposed to learn enough to script decent missions?

Hopefully the expansion pack will improve performance , add some new features though I'm manly interested in the editor and custom made (and debugged) scenarios.

I've heard czech army will took a minor part in this expansion.. is it possible to say which weapons it will use? I'm not an military expert, but it would kill the game if they will not have humvees, pandur II apcs, modernized helicopters, and some other stuff like CZ S 805 A etc.

That's a very good guestion, but the only thing we've seen so far is a Mi-8, a desert jeep and some kind of a 4-wheeler. There is not a clear view of the assault rifle the soldier is carrying but it doesn't seem to be the oldschool SA-58.. Knowing BIS I expect them to add and modlel a proper equipment so I'm not afraid the'll be getting AK-47s as main assault rifles and CZ-52 as sidearms.. :p

As you probably already knew alot of Arma mods were already compatible with A2, OA will be the same, BIS is using the same SDK and whatnot, if anything all you would need is a simple update for your code.

Community Base Addons will help with that and many others, BIS will not disappoint if anything you should be very happy, since the engine will be optimized and have more features for modders and probably more options for them. :D

Vehicle and units, mods or not, from ArmA2 may have some problems working with the FLIR. I have no idea how BIS plans to deal with the vanilla ArmA2 units (if they even plan to), but some of those unit and vehicle addons will need the info to make them compatable with the FLIR system in OA if the modders choose to do so.

I expect, that in case, there will be not defined TI signature, we will use some default temperature from config for each class of objects.

I already explained what was needed earlier in the thread.

Unless BI is willing to release the mlods for the entire game content of ArmA2, its not going to be made FLIR compatible (by modders).

Edit: Plus what Ohara said, so you'll end up with single-temperature for the default A2 content.

As in, all components in one single temp, OFP: DR style?
