ARMA 2 DE 1.01 (final) Impressions - Post ALL Impressions/Videos/Screenies Here

Recommended Posts

Another great simple feature that was missing in Arma and that's back in Arma2:

You can shoot tires and they deflate again! YAY, no more replace the tire texture with rusty texture.

I've seen vehicles with deflated tires, but also vehicles with tire entirely gone.

And it does have bugs, but the overall gameplay is great.

Nice to hear. But do we have breakable glass yet?

Yep. On vehicles and some houses.

Does the the glass "break" independently? meaning not all 7 windows on a car break if you shoot at one of them?

Just did a quick check on the HMMWV - looks like a mixed bag:

If you fire at one of the the side windows, both windows on that side take damage. The two front windows are breakable independently of each other. So there are essentially four different (and thus independently breakable) window damage zones on a HMMWV:

- left side windows

- right side windows

- left windscreen

- right windscreen

:)

Haven't tested any other vehicles yet.

This was a nice surprise. I was messing around in the editor with the combat ambiance module, and thought all the enemies were dead. While I was in a little house exploring, BLAM, the loud sound of broken glass scared the sh#t out of me and I hit the floor. Seems some enemies had spawned and spotted me :D

Hope they change the simultaneous window implosions though.

OK thanks.

So in terms of GFX alone how does ArmA2 compare with FarCry2?

Played my first game of ArmA2. It is far better than I expected by reading the reviews. Is there an explanation somewhere of how to use First Aid Game Logics correctly?

Check the ArmA II Mission Editing and Scripting section. I think I saw a topic on it earlier.

Let's just say it's a completely different game.

At times the graphics look stunningly real, way better then anything else, at times it looks like ofp. Depending on the cpu/gpu load at that time.

It probably will take some patches, but i think it looks better then Crysis sometimes. But that doesn't really matter much, the gameplay is off the chart compared to a semi-corridor shooter like Crysis.

The landscape is uncomparable to anything out there. Sure Crysis has some nice vegetation, but it's all "Tropical" and that's a lot different from "European". The trees/bushes/grass are simply the best available today.

In terms of AI, nothing comes close.

But the whole thing has quite some bugs. So if you can live with waiting for a couple of patches, this is a great game, the best and the only in it's kind.

It's a lot like wine, it gets better over the years :)

I must admit i haven't even tried Farcry2, it's a bit of the same story between Arma2/Ofp2 Dragon Rising. I don't buy into "name based" sequals.

Besides that, after OFP the only company that really got me going on a FPS is BIS. The other games are just so... shallow.

The First Aid thread has it wrong I'm afraid. I think I got it figured out.

First Aid Simulation - enables first aid for the synched unit/s

First Aid Action - wounded animation sequence is played for wounded units

Battlefield Clearance - Human player (not AI units?) can drag soldiers around

There is something totally wrong with your post, If you cant even play ArmA 2 on low then how are you able to play FC2 on high?

And on that note if thats true, you really need to upgrade your pc man, even my crappy pc can run ArmA and film using fraps on mostly high.

I read everywhere that everyone should buy this game because it will be fixed anyway. I never played ArmA 1 so I dont have any experience with that, but how much did they fix in this game?

I remember Stalker (not made by BIS) was very crappy once it was released, altso Clear Sky. Now IMO the games are great with the last patch. My point is, if BIS can change ArmA II like the Stalker series was changed with patched, I think we`re in for something good.

Something's wrong with your computer. I can play on high on a 2 year-old computer... (8800GTX + Q6600 2,4). Most people do (see hardware discussion thread).

how much did they fix in this game?

Arma 1.16 runs around 1.00 in circles. But Arma II runs great already engine-wise, on my machine it already runs better than Arma 1 with 10x more things going on (not to say it cannot be perfected, but it's already technically efficient most of the time).

I don't want to play the campaign before my friends get the 505 version, but the base game seems much more solid that Arma 1 was. I see no major gamebreaker (apart maybe from AI drivers) but rather many small frustrating quirks and inconsistencies in scripts and functions... Nothing that times cannot fix/improve.

Arma 2 suffers from trying to do so much and it somehow failing to do everything at the same level of quality.

IMHO, the map is so good, it's worth buying... I just spent 1 hour cycling around chernarus for sightseeing and spotting good places for future missions... but since a game is only as strong as its weaker points, some people only see the flaws and not the rest.

So what you are saying is that the latest 1.16 patch dont fix much?

Quite the opposite. 1.16 was MUCH better in every aspect perfomance wise than 1.00 (I had the czech download version, I can tell) and gameplay wise (Warfare to name but one).

Note that BIS is still improving Arma 1 more than two years after initial release, and that they will probably do the same for Arma 2 because they keep improving their engine constantly from one game to another, so fixes for Arma 1 made it into Arma 2, and fixes for Arma 2 will help make the sequels better.

That's why I'm confident they will keep working on patches : it's part of their constant engine developpment

Performance wise I really dont care about patching in ArmA II because it runs great. I hope the focus will be on removing bugs and patching up some of the AI. Dont get me wrong, plenty of the AI works very well!

2005 called. they want their hardware back. :D

seriously, if in the year 2009 you buy a brand new, technically ambitious piece of software, you better have the hardware for it. you obivously don't. upgrade. ;)

Just a little video showing the beautiful natural scenery in ARMA2.

It's just a 4 minutes collection of small cynematic clips taken around a dam.

Hope you will enjoy it!
