Hi all

The 1000 AI and 1500 AI and now 1700 AI videos on youtube have started to make an impression on the media

http://www.co-optimus.com/article/2013/Battle_With_1500_AI_and_your_Friends_in_ArmA_2.html

The French are even calling ArmA the future of FPS

Feels weird to see a BIS game compared to large scale Call of Duty in real time, with all the explosions and all that kamikaze nonsense.. in the dark so the tracer fire and explosions stand out, please..

I would be more impressed to see a single armoured platton engage in realistic ranges and make use of the terrain for cover, same with helicopters.

Maybe Arma II handles more stuff going on due to multiple core cpu support, maybe we could already do this type of nonsense with Armed Assault on a modern rig.. anyway its pointless, theres lots of a.i. in there but they arent performing anything close to simulation grade.

Maybe you are right HS but it still sure is impressive from a scale point of view. The infantry AI is what I'm interested in and that feels very much upgraded to me. Hopefully Armor and Air will be next...

I was poking around metacritic and it seems ArmA2 already has a page up with a score of 75%. pretty good for being the German release

All the blurbs mention how much potential the game has

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/arma2

well compare it to

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/operationflashpointresistance?q=flashpoint

or

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/armedassault?q=arma

Then Arma 2 is pretty good,if not as good as resistance.

Gotta agree, these vids make some buzz, but I'm afraid they don't show much apart from pure numbers, which, for HS simulation-wise, for me gameplay-wise, is not really appealing. They are impressive, true, but I'm afraid they may decieve many people

Yeah, those video's seem to pop up everywhere.

Even friends on MSN who never played arma/ofp (but knowing I do) send me the link "did you see this! wow I want to try the demo" etc etc.

Hah, It's at 77% now. :yay:

I think that's one hell of a achievement already. After all we are talking about metacritic here. Usually the average games got pretty bad ratings there even when the game was ok. Only the mainstream crap games like COD4 & whores of war gets good ratings.

Let's see what happens after english release. Hope it doesn't go lower...

PC Zone UK: "It's for the patient."

Me: The many different communities surrounding OFP, ArmA and now Game2, is a testament to BI's development and support.

BI should defenently send richiespeedisback a courtesy coffey mug, with a I SAY AGAIN print.

The same with me. This is great publicity. A small video in youtube... it makes me wonder about the future of publicity....

Heatseaker,

You have some valid points there but you seem to miss the point the author of that video was trying to make: Large scale combat with combined military branches (Air/Armor/Infantry) and all this by using only the aritificial intelligence of the game without any extra/intra-scripting.

There are not many games around capable of delivering such possibilities, and this makes OFP/ArmA/ArmA II series rather 'unique', to say the least.

Of course, ArmA II isn't perfect and could have been much better if some aspects would have received more attention (Range Engagements, Dispersion Values...) and of course, it's frustrating to know that it would be the community, which would once again get all this done, but this is obviously not enough to hurt the global quality of ArmA II.

TB

It is definitely a great video. Arma2 looks lovely during nighttime it seems. A lot less non-sensical Bloom/White-Washout stuff going on :p .

While it is impressive that the engine can handle so many AI tho , the point is valid that the video shows unorganized shooting and exploding , which while looks very cool is hardly something that is going to provide much fun in the long term.

This engine hardly does organized platoon combat very well , before we get to organized 1500 AI fighting it out I see another 20 years passing by :).

Again , not bashing the video , thats very well done.

QFT. A thousand times QFT. It's quite apparent that infantry, in particular, have zero clue as to how to handle those giant battles.

Hi all

For the French Fans a Review

http://www.nofrag.com/2009/jun/16/31693/

Kind Regards walker

A very positive review, but its author complains about the old'n classical bugs such as 'AI still sees you through the smoke or through the fog...' etc

However, all in all, according to him, ArmA II is The new Infantry Simulation Reference.

TB

Maybe i'm wrong (i didn't have the game) but i remember a video where player was hidden behind a bush and the enemy ia was looking to the bush but he didn't shoot the player.... so seems to be that ia can't look trought bushes

Would be fine if someone make a test to see if ia is able to see you troughh smoke/fog

Bushes definitely provide concealment, smoke possibly aswell (had mixed results when testing), grass (i.e. everything that disappears on very low landscape detail) does not - yet.

I don't think it's appropriate to start a new thread for this, so while I'm not quite press, I think this fits here better than anywhere else right now.

The new Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures Guide for ArmA2 will premiere later this week. Date is TBD (probably Friday or Saturday), but the whole thing is done and ready to go, pending me finishing my final read-through pass of it.

The guide ended up being almost exactly twice as big as the previous one, and contains a great deal of new and revised goodness. For an example of the changes, take a look at this - it's part of the new Fireteam Leader section.

fireteam_teaser_tmb.png

For comparison, here is what that section looked like in TTP1.

Looking forward to getting this out there for everyone to see. It's been a huge effort, but I think the result is well worth it. :)
