To the people who are playing ArmA, how is it?

Recommended Posts

Sounds like the grass is exactly the same as in Joint Operations, you assume because the grass is 5ft high that you are concealed but your opponent can see you clear as day.

true. in jo grass is no real cover when it comes to concealment. the enemy can spot you from far away, even though you will not be able to spot him.

to be honest this is really a disappointment, because i was hoping that arma would be more realistic than jo.

Some random questions...

-Are there any options indicating automatic downloading of addons in the menus?

I don't think this is possible by the looks of it, but then again there isn't one addon out yet ...

-How does holding breath work exactly? (how much delay, how much does it effect aiming, how long can you hold breath)

If you hold down the right click on the mouse itll hold breathe for about 5-10sec or something. Not really sure how long though cause Ive only used it really quickly and a few times.

-Does toggle look key give 100% steady aim?

-If you run through a forest, can the AI keep up?

LOL, funny that you mentioned this. I made a quick black hawk down mission in the editor and surrounded my blackhawk with 50 men approaching. I jumped out and started running to the the closest forest(I was in open desert), and the enemy squad leaders gave orders to 4 or 5 men to target me. They chased me all through the forest. They are fast.

-Are there focal blur effects when aiming with ironsights?

-Do bushes move or make sound when you run through them?

-Do the light cones illuminate stuff behind them if you look through them from the side as seen on some screen shots?

I answerered a few of your questions. Hope that helps. Don't want to give misinformation on the ones I'm not to familiar with.

I was really fearing this grass thing. I hope its fixed soon or possible to disable. I was also disappointed how the M136 is reloadable and sounds like a javelin when you fire it. When do the WGL guys start working ? biggrin_o.gif

With the grass in Joint Operations you could use it as cover at certain distances (from relatively close up to intermediate, for want of better terminology). However, at long distances the cover dissapeared, and if you lay down on a ridge, you could be clearly seen as a green silhouette. It is a pitty that it will not provide some distant cover in ArmA, or that the grass effect extends further, but I can understand that it is a performance compromise. Perhaps this can be modded at a latter date when the average computer gets more powerful.

Yes.

I was attacking some soldiers while I was prone in grass. The grass hinders the sight a lot but provides no visual cover. It was hard to attack that group of soldiers. While in plain sight I could see all the soldiers with no problem but when switching to visor view I was not able to target them anymore.

It´s a bit weird.

Oh no! This was my biggest concern, I'm very disappointed to hear it didn't make it to the game. sad_o.gif

What's the point of grass when it's not a concealment?

I don't need grass when it's just for eyecandy, remove it or fix it. because right now it just unfair.

Btw, znashin. Where did you see these alpha blending on soldiers pics?

I like to know how are the planes now when bombing/firing on ground vehicles are they still diving like in OFP and crash to ground or dammage their self or has BIS fixed this?

To anyone that has Armed Assault, I have some questions.

-How many players can play the campaign coop?

-Can you save in a multiplayer mission, and reload it later?

That's all I have for now.

you know I was "screaming" about this "f*&^%ing" grass feature the first time I saw it on screenshots. Now the nightmare is the reality! The grass has to be an option in settings!!! so that we can toggle it off. It will be a serious annoyance in MP when ppl will be staying away from going prone because the grass obstructs their view and limits situational awareness. In 5ft tall grass person won't see anything but grass while an opponent 100ft away will be seeing him in plain view lying on bare ground. What are devs thinking about!!! Besides, this question has been asked in one of the interviews this summer - and the devs stated clearly that the grass will be fully functional, not just an eye candy. The worst is that AI can see through this tall grass and a player can't. People gonna be really pissed off when they are gonna be getting shot from a thick grass patches by a lying AI completely concealed by the eye candy grass. The only visual effect grass that can work is the sparse one that doesn't obstruct player's view.

Unless they just didn't have time to implement it. I'd say wait for a patch, or at lease the German release before flying off the handle.

Well I think it's about giving the Dev's and BIS a chance to live up to their 'promises'. Let's wait and see what happens with the Major 505 release as has been stated previously by God's BIS Messenger (No offence intended to God or anyone else): Placebo, there will no doubt be patches and improvements to this Eastern ArmA 'Basic' release. Lets wait a while and see where it all goes shall we then people can berate the BIS, the dev's, etc, if things don't work out the way they want the game to be!

I seriously doubt people will be complaining if ArmA goes through the same improvement process that OFP went through...

The grass is really not concealment in this game. I don't know whether this game needs a patch or what but I've played in many multiplayer games and a soldier might think he is concealed in the grass off in a distance but to the enemy screen the grass doesn't show and the player is like in the open but he thinks he his concealed. Needs a patch or something

biggrin_o.gif I dont have the game yet, but I've thought of just that. It's kinda obvious you wont be hidden in the grass when the grass is not visible from distance. I dont know how a patch would solve that though. Would be nice if it could, but..

Oh nos. There were screenies taken showing alpha blending on soldiers in grass, even if the grass wasn't visible. I take it this feature didn't make it in. Horrible news. I thought it was one of the better new features. Would've given infantry the stealth and ambush potential they deserve in the wilds. I was looking forward to lying in foot high grass and laying an ambush for a convoy or passing squad. sad_o.gif . Bad news. Still, having the bushes and trees as visual cover is still ok.

Up close lin close quartters you are concealed but if you are looking up at a mountain about 250 meters away you can see the guy as plain as day and my settings are maxed.

Can i just say the other guy will also be surrendered bye Grass too so he cant see shit, unless its AI of course who probley cant see you at tht distance.

These aren't wheatfields guys. The grass isn't 5 ft tall. It looks like in most areas the grass wouldn't cover the players body even if both people are lying in it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have the grass rendered across the map. Trust me, I redid all of BIS's islands and covered them with a grass addon. But this grass as implemented wouldn't provide the level of conceilment you guys are talking about. I haven't seen the entire island or even all of the screenshots, but most of the shots I have seen show grass of about a foot or less. I let the grass in my backyard get longer than that sometimes (shame on me) and trust me, if someone lies down in it... they aren't hiding from anyone.

It would hide you eye level to eye level and that is effectively accomplished by having grass rendered by both players. I think this is something that needs to be deactivated during competitive MP play though, for both performance and fairness.

I'm in two minds about being hidden from the AI in grass. Its a nice idea, but as far as actual game mechanics...

Does the AI really need another disadvantage vs human opponents? No.. I never liked that I could simply go prone in OFP and I'd be, for the most part, invisible from AI helicopters.

I'd like the ability to hide in tall grass though. This could probably only be implemented via map placement - not when it is generated around the player.

Or disable the 3rd person view?

Been wondering about this for some time...

Can someone with the game confirm either way:

Is the Coop Campaign in or no?

Also, is the AI driving improved?  As in, do they still get stuck in transit (especially in "car" type vehicles)?

Many thanks!

Does the grass give cover at long distances? Anyone remember the abysmal Joint Operatiopns from Novalogic?   You`d be lying in grass thinking you are covered, but peeps see you from way out there on flat bald azz terrain.

addendum... but grass giving cover, I mean VISUAL cover/concealment.  Grass just there to be pretty, is pretty useless. It`d be cool if the grass concealed at distances.

"The grass is really not concealment in this game. Guess this answers my question. Damn. What a total waste of CPU cycles to have grass there for eyecandy only. So far, this is the 1st strike against this game.

Sorry Blanco I can't find the thread that contained the well picked out screenies. They showed soldiers whose feet and shins quite clearly blurred (nice) into the colour of the grass. I was excited enough at the time to send the link to my xfire friends and was convinced that soldiers at range would be partially blended into grass that was or wasn't visible on other clients. My only concern was whether the ai would respond to hidden players.

Bah.

Would've been the icing on the cake.

If anyone remembers the thread or has a talent for searching please give the link. It had screenie comparisons to jo if that helps.

No problem, thx for the reply. wink_o.gif

I hope they 'll find a way because I was really looking forward to this. It was my first concern months ago when I saw the first grass pics, I even made a topic about it.

I don't agree with Rubbin, I saw plenty of pictures and videos of troops lying in 5th grass and you could harldy see them even up close.

Actually, is the grass visible when you watch someone through a scope?

Obviously I don't have the game, but I think people are getting bushes and grass mixed up.

http://files.naturalpoint.com/video/gamedemo/PCF_Arma_TIR_p2.wmv

In this trackir demo of arma, you can see the player in a grassy field where the grass is tall - but naturaly and not 5ft tall. In the ladder part of the footage, you see the player aproaching a building in tall grass next to many large bushes that are around 5ft tall. From what I hear from arma users, bushes do in fact block your view from enemies.

As for grass realism if you ever get a chance, have someone get 100 yards away from you in a field where the grass is about 1 foot high and tell him to go prone, you will still see him. If he is holding a rifle he will not be able to use iron sights or a scope when aiming at sea level. To me that is realistic.

P.S. I have another questions for those luck eastern europe mission makers; Can AI clear interiors of buildings? If so, tacticaly?

actually that was changed not long after the demo, if you lay down in the grass you blended in beyond the grass rendering range, you sorta matched the color of the terrain so it was still very hard to stop u but not completly invisable ither.

Just short impressions after 2 hour try:

-The english-language trick are far for perfect, the missions briefing, and many HUD element (like guns name) are remain czech. With this, i hardly try to begin the campagin... :\

-The TrackIR rocks!!! I have a TrackIR 4Pro, and have absolutely positive feelings about using under ArmA.

-The AI are... well, not really perfect. I shoot down an truck driver with M24 sniper rifle, but the driver two comrades, sitting alongside are doing nothing...

-The game need a decent PC. I have an AMD A62X2 4000+ @ 2400Mhz, 2Gbyte Ram, GeForce 7900GTX, and playing all options set to Very High, except Anti-aliasing, wich set to Low. Note: default the anti-aliasing setting are medium, wich hardly eat the VGA!

I get the following performance:

1200m sighting distance:

Wandering outside towns: 30Fps

In towns: 25-30Fps

Firefight between several soldier: 25-30Fps

Firefight in town: 20-25Fps

Flying outside towns: 30Fps

Flying above larger towns: 25Fps

3500m distance:

In land: 25-30Fps

In town: 22-25Fps

Firefight outside towns: 20-25Fps

Flying in daylight: 20-25Fps

Flying in midnight: 15-25Fps

10000m distance:

In land: 15Fps

In flying: 8-15Fps

Flying in midnight: 6-10Fps

I try a short Stress-test, using 180 infantry unit and 24 M1A1 tanks, i get around 20 Fps flying above with an helicoter, and 16-18Fps walking among them (two last pics).

The screenshots

I think now I know what the game is real like from the above comments. For playing the game in full indulgence without any disturbing, it's better to get divorced before shooting the game...
