No, what happened? (No troll, really can't remember)

I think this was about the early stages of A3. Remember the KSGs and XM25s in those screenshots?

They confirmed several features that didn't end up making it to release.

I would instantly un install Arma 3. Lol, jk. I don't know man, i just hope BIS doesn't take it too far into the Sci-Fi world. I hope it looks realistic.

(after thinking about it... that would be pretty sick, as long as it doesn't look as fake as the Stealth A-10 and Huron. You know, it needs to look like a work horse in service, if that makes sense... rugged...)

... Ehem... Did a tadd bit of editting...

ENCHANCE!

Enhance_zpsclscf9jz.png?t=1438563869

It looks like a drone or a gunship. Unfortunately, you can tell that it really doesn't have a Co-Pilot/Pilot configuration like the MV-22 or V-280 do. Which leaves us at... Drone. Or gunship... most likely drone though...

ENHANCE!

Enhance_zpsqrrtjwjf.png

Oh and, since no one else thought of it, here is a side shot no one else thought to Enhance.

Did i just say Enhance? Moar!

Nah. If anything it looks like a modified MV-22 being ready to be converted to a true gunship. Kinda like this .

Except less dumb looking. As long as they don't "stealth" it up. I'm sick of hardware getting improperly stealth' to death when it's the last thing you would put stealth on militarily.

Not so "the last thing" if doctrine demanded (sensibly or not) that the VTOL be able to get in closer to an AO than an Osprey would have.

On the other hand the entire point of the Ghost Hawk is that US SOF had something done to the helicopters in the 2011 Abbottabad raid* and presumably Bohemia's artists wanted to capitalize on that -- remember, the raid was announced over two weeks before Arma 3 was announced -- while the RAH-66 Comanche in real-life was supposed to be such a "stealthed up" design for all the mockery that one might give to the idea of a stealth helicopter**, and in hindsight... I can't see any reason why the designers in the Armaverse wouldn't have at least tried. Indeed, depending on capacity, vulnerability, and doctrine there might have been even more imperative to attempt a stealthier design than the Osprey is.

After all, if "stealthing up" the A-164 Wipeout gave it even slightly more of a chance than an A-10 would have had against a SA-10...

* The Ghost Hawk's explicitly (in the Field Manual) a designed-for-SOF design that ended up being used as "primary transport" even for conventional forces, so yet again the US Army doesn't seem to have been facing a budget crunch in the years leading to Bootcamp and The East Wind.

** I recognize the irony that what was going to be an AH-1/OH-58 replacement ended up as BLUFOR's only attack helicopter in this game.

Also CH-67 Huron is "stealthed up" , so it won't be a big surprise when we will see a MV-22 "stealthed up"

That could be interesting.

I'd love to see a "stealthed up" MV-22. Also, regarding that picture - is it just me or does it look kind of like a KA-60/Mi-24 with rotors from the Avatar gunship?

the "Fenestron" for the propeller/airscrew seems too thin

Especially because of word just over two weeks after the Abbottabad raid was that such a "stealthed up" Chinook had participated as well.

I agree, but mainly what i mean is wide service use. Because the faction using the Ghost-hawk (NATO) represents wide use. To have so many Stealth'd up workhorse helicopters, is kinda of not smart. It'd be like having stealth Humvee's in surplus. Not only is it super expensive to have, but to use like regular Humvee's would mean maintenance. I've read up on how the F-22 is super costly to maintain compared to Russian Aircraft, which on top of that, are designed to be easy to work with from the get go. The comparison was Sorties in a time length. That's just one comparison, because stealth vehicles take longer to field due to how complicated it is to keep them functioning the way they should, else you got an expensive heli for no reason. This is the same for any hardware with the same technology, and would only make sense in a budget in which other nations gear is up to the same level. In other words, it would make sense if other factions had Stealth vehicles of the same or differing classes.

That's a nice case of "true and also irrelevant" you have there, shame if anything were to happen to it...

Bohemia has asserted time and time again via equipment choices as far back as the 2010s' M16-to-Mk.16 replacement that irrespective of the real-world consequences and/or difficulties or what anyone else is doing, the US Army of the Armaverse does have such a big budget and can (admittedly by authorial fiat) do stuff like "have so many Stealth'd up workhorse helicopters", smartness be damned (the Field Manual acknowledges some pilots' critique of lost versatility)... for want of more specific explanations for why not, it'd be more of a logic gap for me to see BLUFOR be able to field stealthed-up Black Hawks, Comanches, and Chinooks but somehow not VTOLs... though admittedly I also wouldn't be surprised if Bohemia adhered to a real-life inspiration without a stealth design.

Heck, it'd make sense for me if the OPFOR of Apex (if not the base game's) was -- indeed, it should be -- plausibly capable of having fielded vehicles with "low observable" design (a more accurate term than "stealth") especially if they're another member nation of CSAT, whose Mediterranean contingent was able to field "bug helmet and radiator" infantry, and when even in our timeline the US doesn't have a monopoly on the capability to design a helicopter for lower observability (or rather signature reduction).

The VTOL thing looks way too heavy to be some kind slimmed attack helicopter (ala comanche). Looks more like something like the obese Mi-Frankenstein we have in A3, with offensive but allso support/logistics capability.

I definitely like that they bring back VTOL, which hopefully means they also work a bit on making the flightsimulation for those a bit better...

Almost exactly my thoughts. But I'd say it looks more like Mi8/Mi24.

Alright, good points. Sigh. i miss the sexiness of regular aircraft designs though. The V-22 in Arma to is probably one of the best. At least there's hope for some armed VTOL's. I remember being able to lift APC's and tanks in Arma 2 with the V-22, and I would have a buddy manning the Gun while I circled an area. Make shift Gunship. Though it wasn't very effective, a non-makeshift Armed VTOL would be interesting. as for Opfor, who knows. I would like more diversity in weapons technology between factions. For example one faction has this while the other has this to cancel that, and so on. Of course still with the match, but at least different weapons systems, and capabilities.

Note for perspective that besides its existing gun options the MV-22's been continuing to undergo weapons testing in the past year -- 70 mm rocket launched from a tube under the pilot's side window, a Griffin AGM from the ramp -- while Bell's been pitching the V-280 Valor as a potential dual-role or at least capable of an attack derivative akin to the UH-1/AH-1 relationship, though the USMC is more interested than the US Army which at last check was intent on separate airframes. Nevertheless, the potential's there if Bohemia wants to go this route.

I definitely like that they bring back VTOL, which hopefully means they also work a bit on making the flightsimulation for those a bit better...

That's because the Osprey was just a plane with vtol = 3;... but at the moment it doesn't seem like there's sling-load capability either so that capability can't yet be represented in-game.

interesting, maybe the next BI engine will have the voxel for the terrain like the Cryengine

Ylands is on Unity, so that's no guarantee that Enfusion (the confirmed "next BI engine") will use voxels in that way.

I wonder :

IF Apex has a campaign, will it also be released in episodes like the ArmA 3 on?
