As this idea has been tossed around for a bit, it seems it would be good to gauge how the community really feels about it, through a poll.

A lot of things in A2 are not up to OA standards, in particular:

  • Less detailed thermal map for A2 units
  • A2 vehicles lacking FLIR
  • No CQB sights on A2 weapons
  • No working flashlights on A2 weapons
  • No working IR lasers on A2 weapons
  • A2 units cannot use backpacks

Should BIS take the time and effort to deal with these issues?

Note: this isn't another thread to whine for MLODs, or to point out that X, Y or Z mod already accomplishes some of this. This is to show BIS what we really think, in order to help them to decide. :)

Now go ahead and vote!

Yes as a patch/replacement pack for OA(Obviously).

I found it rather odd that this wasnt the case already, though it was never promised of course.

Yes please! This I would like it to be a free patch instead of paid DLC, as only configs are needed to make it work.

@Muahaha

it is more than only config works, else it would already have be done completely by the community.

I wouldn't mind a patch but i guess it is unlikely that BIS will put so much effort in this. So i voted for "better idea" as i guess that releasing the MLOD's would have much more impact for the community, fixing the above points being just one part of it.

But to be honest, i don't count on that either.

I think the idea (business model) is that you BUY OA to receive it's content. Keeps developers working, and gamers broke at home, eating 2 for 1 pizza and drinking noname beer. :)

BIS just made a mistake by making OA as a standalone expansion FPDR

I'm ok to buy more stuff to support BIS, but I feel Arma 2 content should be patched to OA standard with an OA patch, not a DLC.

To me, this seems more like a "fix" than anything else.

I have plenty of other ideas of things I would buy from BIS to fund more development, but some things like that should be included by default.

Agreed, I voted "as a free patch" as well. I will buy any DLC from BIS, including the upcoming Brit pack, and whatever else they want to sell me, bt think this should be included in the next patch.

I definatly would like to see arma2 content upgraded to OA standards

the pressing question is how. I opted for "free patch"

i understand that doing that upgrade will be alot of work for someone and use up alot of valuable money, and manhours. but it seems a bit off to be paying money for content you already have to have a few variables tweaked (+new shader layer). its one thing to buy something new (BAF, which i am definitely going to buy), but paying for such a fix... dont feel right. BIS says they wont sell engine fixes or whatever either...

it also seems very bad and very unprofessional for the CO to have half the content not up to standard. so in my mind it is absolutely necessary to upgrade the A2 content no matter what, be it pay or free.

i highly value consistency in game content. thats one reason why i often dont DL single weapon or vic addons.... but thats for another day...

this is the Nth thread about this issue.

1. upgrading A2 content to OA standards is a hefty job that would take TONs of time - i doubt it will happen

2. MLODs - since BIS has taken the DLC route, and since a lot of A2 addons have been made by 3rd party developers (so the contract might not allow them to release the MLODs anyways) i wouldn't put my finger on it, saying that it will happen.

BTW: you can transform the ODOL version in MLOD version using TD tools anyways (although you will loose the selections, some mem points etc, so some work is required to make it work)

Why does it really matter anyways?

They are doing this so they can continue fixing the bugs and enhancing the engine. Basically its going to a fund for improvements.

Quit making topic about buying DLC's for god sake

This is another topic waiting to be thrown away by an admin

You obviously missed the point of this thread. Try again. FPDR

this is the Nth thread about this issue.

It's the only one with a poll though, and that's why it was started. The point of this thread is to see if people are willing to purchase said "upgrades" for a small fee, justifying the development time/effort for BIS. I don't mind if some of the other threads are merged into this one, but please keep the poll as the point here is about what the community thinks.

I would advise everyone to read this thread before voting though. These upgrades are not a trivial task.

As though we didn't have enough Who Wants Free Beer? polls.

Seriously I would pay for it but there'd be so much moaning it wouldn't be worth BI's while. Apart from that I don't think we have any reasonable right to expect it for free.

This is a good point, I agree with you and I think if it came down to it I'd probably be willing to purchase it too, but then there's the valid point that owners of ArmA 2 will be essentially buying the same content again.

That's why I think it deserves discussion.

I would like to see the original Arma 2 content which is imported to OA to be updated, to OA standard for only OA users, as that makes more sense to me, as the content difference noticed more when you are mixing OA content with the original stuff. also OA users have kind of parted with money for the extra features.

then again I would also like a million pound but I don't think that is happening.

Still nice to see people stating opinion in a nice civilised way.

Well given they can't sell it but some of us are prepared to buy it, I can imagine some sort of initiative where we run a poll to see what set of items the community would most like to see upgraded next, BIS price the work involved, and we run a donations chest to pay for that. Now it's a lot like selling but only the willing pay and any bitching about how BI' priced it could be offset by their nominating a charity to receive all/some of the funds.

I mean for me its just things like, tanks which there is an arma2 and OA versions of, just upgrading the original to the OA standard which in some cases I would have thought is just a simple case of moving skins over, but then again I'm not a programmer.

This.

Ransom Model

1. Give the community a rough price projejction for the project.

2. Set up a project kickstarter , paypal or similar account system.

3. Let individuals donate money. (as much or as little as they like)

4. Create content.

5. Release content FREELY to all who own Operation Arrowhead.

6. Next project.

but then there's the valid point that owners of ArmA 2 will be essentially buying the same content again.

Apple users buy the same shitty product again and again (with minor up-/ or even downgrades) and don't seem to have any problems with that. Upgrading A2 toys is a minor series upgrade, which is certainly worth some money. Most companies ask for the full amount time and again, everytime a new version of the same friggin thing is frown on the market. Cars, phones, music-players, cloths, shoes... pretty much everything. So I declare that argument as invalid. :D

Anyway...

...maybe totally nuts (and a Schnapsidee/crazy idea), but: what if BIS would announce a certain total amount and then have a donation/counter running until the money is in. Money that should only be used to upgrade the A2 content to OA standards. It can't be _that_ much money, no? I certainly would donate a few bucks, hehe.

Sooo, schnaps or not?

:811:

EDIT:

oO.. so I'm defenitely too schnaps, erhm, late :D

Two schnaps with the same idea :D

OA released as a stand alone expansion was a huge blunder. OA should have been ArmA3. I really do not like OA, when I compare the content to ArmA2.

I have to say, that if I knew that I wouldn't have my A2 weapons and equipment to use in addition to OA I wouldn't have bothered to buy it.

So to answer the question OPed. I would like to see OA updated to bring A2 content up to speed with OA.

Yes, I want it, and I'd be willing to pay for it if required, but I'd prefer for it to be free of course. :p

I'd like to see the features mentioned in the 1st post as free DLC for everyone who owns Operation Arrowhead. Free, because those are basic features IMHO.

However the list should be extended to working BTR-90 interior ... just for comparison the following pictures (left BTR-60 of Arrowhead, right BTR-90 of A2). The BTR-90 is useless!

arma2oa2010072923495944.th.jpgarma2oa2010072923501912.th.jpg

Right now A2 content in Arrowhead feels incomplete and sometimes out of place.

A2 content should be brought up to oa specs. When the possibility of combining OA with an existing Arma2 installation to create "Combined Operations" was first mentioned it sounded pretty impressive... There are big holes. You can't run any "Combined Operations" with the A2 and OA units as all the vehicles for the USMC are in the wrong camo-scheme for the vehicles in the Army and that's before we even go anywhere near any other issues.
