Startled birds

Recommended Posts

Don't know why someone didn't think of this already, but it's an effective way to see if people are creeping up through the forest to you smile_o.gif

I wonder if I can script it effectively to test for movement mode. Stealthy and you're fine, crashing about and you got a red flag above you.

Very good as always. There's also some nice sounds in XAM to associate at that script.

The [pseudo] bird flocking behaviour would be a nice addition

in its own right too.

Ornithology mod, anyone? biggrin_o.gif

Nice, something BIS themselves promised/talked about being in ArmA.

Would love to see them going more forwards then directly up, and offcourse some sound, so you even notice some units from behind etc.

But then there must be some way to not have this happen when in stealth or to avoid them somehow.

It looks promosing and without what I suggest it will still be awesome

Truly amazing!

However i think it need a bit work so the birds are not so dense and their group should be not so artificial round everytime.

Also as someone other already said, the groups of birds should randomized fly into different directions - not only upwards. Just look how nature does it in real life......

Best Regards, Christian

Great stuff again DM with some sound, less birds (or dynamic amount) and flying 'flater' (again or dynamic) this will be a permanent singleplayer addon like your smoke and VB thumbs-up.gif.

Yea, nice idea DM. As already said, some sound added and maybe having the script look for enemy soldiers within 100-200 m and reveal your groups existance to them with the reveal command?

I guess people who don't live in a country with finches don't realize the size of the flocks. But at any rate, if you have a bunch of flocks of finches close together like that, the sudden departure of one flock will make the other one leave aswell... and like the youtube comment, you should have them take off in some direction to begin with rather than vertically.

What a great idea! The flock of birds getting disturbed in that video look really realistic. About the vid as well, is that your map DM? It looks REALLY realistic!

Thanks for the comments guys, glad it's getting a generally positive response. smile_o.gif

The birds will continue to fly straight up for the foreseeable, they're only crappy little sprites so any sort of scrutiny by people standing under them will reveal their simple nature. They're just generic flapping shapes, as I cannot tell which way any individual is likely to fly it doesn't make sense to make only left or right flying birds. So they just fly generally up (with variations) into the sky. Their purpose is not to simulate bird life but to simulate bird disturbance, which I think it does. What happens to them once they fly away is not important.

In fact they're just particles, and particles cannot be controlled once they're "floated" away, they just react according to their settings. The sprites themselves are a mixture of 4 different animation cycles, and each bird receives it's own individual animation cycle speed so there's lots of subliminal variance.

@ArmaVidz, yes that's a new map I'm working on smile_o.gif it's slow going, but it's 100% accurate to the kosovian area I've chosen to replicate. Placing everything by hand is a labour of love, and of course I'm learning as I go, it being my first map. But it should be quite nice for ground ops particularly.

*edit*

Oh BTW, if anyone can point me to a nice flocking birds soundsample/youtube etc then I'd be grateful.

Looped a couple of times and maybe mixed with parts of this at lower volume?

Lots of nice sounds available here check it out...

Thanks KeyCat, I cobbled together a basic soundsample from some of the files at one of the links you gave smile_o.gif

The sound is very important here. You'll need at least 5 different examples of flocks flying off. If you use just one or two it'll annoy the player when he hears the same old samples repeating over and over.

great addon for ArmA! i really liked this feature in the original "vietcong" game, it really made you curse yourself for upsetting the birds... wink_o.gif

keep up your good work!
