Is Arma3 still the "Flagship"

^ I got my infraction without a warning by posting something like that on another thread, so watch out.

Of course Arma3 development is impacted by DayZ, but not so much to be worried. Rocket is the only person who leaves the team. I think he deserves to be released for his dream project. Of course we share some small resources (far far from fulltime), however in A3 project size and development times it's really nothing. This can change in future, well, I don't think it'll happen. A3 is going it's own way. And more we can gain from DayZ development even for Arma. Can't promise anything for DayZ. I can just say we won't go against each other. So, DayZ team is not recruiting people from A3 so far, just partly using some specialists. And vice versa.

I'm quite surprised and happy that this didn't turn into a flamewar.

Nice discussion so far

Was the recent removal of a 3D editor and from what I've heard, deferred shading related to the DayZ split?

But why on earth would one remove the 3D editor when there's already a working version in the forerunner (ArmA II)? :raisebrow:

Every mission maker wants it, it saves so much time and nervs, so.........

In my humble opinion and selfish point of view the 3d editor or lack off is no real biggie, I'd prefer to see a few more options in the 2d editor, especially with modules like wf, acm and secops.... Also improvements in the ai area, I understand there maybe doubt surrounding that but would be nice to see... Everything else is just candy on top, even the 3d editor, and I use it often in arma 2, if it was to be included as it is currently in A2 then what would be a nice improvement to it would be larger/better drop down selections, everything else I can live with.

A 3D editor is certainly not candy, the biggest pro it would have for mission designers is that they would be able to see where they are placing things in realtime as opposed to placing them and hoping the icons allow them to match up, more often than not requiring hundreds of ingame jumps to get but a few objects proper. This in turn frustrates and limits the amount of scenarios across the board, if we could have a 3D editor (I'm not talking something as complex as crysis where you can import models, rig them, form terrain and more or less build the map in it, just something with a visible X Y Z so we will KNOW where objects will be rather than guessing.

That said I'm not convinced the 3D editor itself is removed from the game fully. We only got wind of it not being included in the gamescom and community alpha and people took it to heart that meant period, I don't think that is the case. Not going to comment on the flagship statement since a developer addressed the issue.

It seems, to me, to be overly reactionary to see the creation of a single development team as a reason to believe that BI is relegating ARMA 3 to the margins in order to make DayZ their main product.

"The [DayZ] project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price."

In no way can this mean that DayZ is now the main focus. It means that there is a dedicated team working on improvements to the game at a fairly fast (compared to most development cycles), yet steady rate. Community involvement and input helps the devs find bugs.

If I could make a psychological guess as to where this fear comes from, I would say it comes from the same instinct that makes a family anxious and nervous before a baby is born.

Community 3D editor: [Alpha] RTE for ArmA II

With callExtension now available, it could be made far easier to setup and usable.

It only needs community people to work on it. This open such is far more flexible in the current form and in ways to extend and improve it.

This makes sense; the community alpha is specifically for testing the most visible features that'd be of relevance to players, not so much addon or mission creators.

Also, my expectation is that it could still be there in the way that it's there in ArmA2, i.e. sort-of-there, but not supported in any way. But maybe there's a little more functionality.... ;)

Will it come post release?

I'm not even a mission maker and I know that the 3d editor is a big deal. I prob would make missions if it was in.

3D editor is indeed a big deal. Try putting something inside a building or in any other place that requires precision and, especially, Z axis and tell me how 3D editor is no biggie.

That plus the comfort of the instant feedback instead of wasting time hitting preview button to see if everything is in its place and if it's not getting back into the editor and adjusting.

As I said I'm constantly using it especially with placing units in/on buildings etc, I still don't think it's a biggie in the bigger scheme of things, sure i would love to see it or some form of it in A3 but it's exclusion is no game breaker... Not for me anyway :)

My thoughts exactly. The 3D editor is mainly a convenience feature, so I expect it was low on their list of priorities from the beginning. "Nice to have", as they say.

I'm sad to see it go, but it's not the end of the world.

Its the end of the beginning, if the 3d editor is just thrown away like this! It would be great to have it and so many things would be easier to do, so why throw it away? I thought their goal was to improve the engine and add features that benefit the players...

If they can just improve the AI then I won't argue about it, but some important things need to altered.

For stuff like this use the 3d editor thats in A2, and use the sqf - sqm converter. Thats how I deal with object placement in any missions.

But we are talking about ArmA3, NOT ArmA2. At this point, what features are in ArmA2 aren't really that relevant to what's in ArmA3. ArmA3 won't have a 3d editor. So then explain to me how one is going to use the 3d editor in ArmA2 to make missions in ArmA3?

Even though this is what I expected, it is still nice to hear an honest confirmation from the devs, thanks for letting us know:)

Understood and yes it would be nice to have but a Dev already said that Rocket leaving has no determining factor in the 3d editor decision. What else do you want? A pinky swear? They also wanted to have fully destructable buildings in Game 2, but at the end of the day it just wasn't feasible. Crossing your arms, stomping your feet and curling your bottom lip in defiance ain't going to change anything.
