What do you guys do?..

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

Asking myself.

What do you guys actually do with arma 2?..

I'm more of a campaign story mode guy, and as we all know in arma 2 it sucks.. big time :'(

I tried playing online but omfg guess what, it sucks too since I can't do anything.. and noone is responding to my chat questions.

the scenario's are okay. And I'm not that kind of guy who likes to create his own missions. Cause you know then it's not the same :p

So what do you guys do when u wake up and start ArmA 2 ?

Yours truly (a)

Azamato

Coop. In my opinion it's what the game really excels at.

Not public servers mind you - get a few friends together or try joining a group or two.

Lots of great coop missions on armaholic.com

I mostly play homemade coop missions with people that have same play style as me, serious but not too serious :)

I spend most of my time in mission editor, attempting to do some custom missions, testing addOns or just fooling around. Sometimes I actually get to play some singleplayer missions, but not really often.

Mainly coop, Evo and Dom with the ACE mods on our server (HSLD).

If no-one is around I sometimes dig out some old SP scenarios - create a number of different files in towns with a variety of patrolling units, save them and go on to something else. In the future I can go back, not remember the pathing or positions etc and try and clear a town. Did this a lot in Arma1 with Taliban and UK forces with Jackals.

For me, there's nothing like a Co-op mission with a 'group/clan' of the same play/game-style as I like to do (That's the game experience I thrive for)

I would highly recommend visiting a few different 'group/clans' and getting to see if any of them fit your game/play-style.

Happy gaming! :)

Mostly Coop, some custom SP campaigns (like Navy SEALs campaigns) and PvP organised campaigns (in my case I'm playing in Theatre of War, but there are more out there like Charlie Foxtrot).

and noone is responding to my chat questions

Are you typing in the right channel? ;) Made that mistake a few times...

I spend a lot of time making scenarios for myself to play in SP. As you said, it's not the same :) BUT - I try to build in as much variance and randomness as possible, and with some addons that do the same, I can make scenarios that even I as the author have no real idea what's going to happen. I can spend days on the same scenario before getting tired of it, and most of them never actually become proper "missions" but remain as editor files.

If you make a particularly good one, you can often get more mileage out of it by shifting the whole scenario to a different part of the map, or even copy & paste to a different map, change the weather & time of day, and it's like a different scenario.

We call it Arma Wanking.

I got a 4 pc lan in my house so no internet for me. The story is usually pretty basic, even nonsensical in nature. Sometimes we invent the most ridiculous excuses to shoot bullets at enemies.

Example brief from the last few weeks of gaming:

"Those Russian guys talked shit about our mothers AGAIN! We must kill them before they diss our families one more time. This time is personal! As it was all the previous times!"

Then we proceed with the killing of aforementioned russian guys that talked bad about our mothers.

We like to keep it simple.

I play some sp missions every now and then, usually get frustrated with the AI's inability to perform certain tasks and quit.

Then i mess around in the editor quite a bit, attempt to create a custom mission, usually get frustrated with the AI's inability to perform certain tasks and quit.

Then i play co-op online and it's all good.

Mostly I play single player missions that people release on Armaholic or here, ive gone off online gaming in recent years! Im still waiting for some more campaigns to be released, although 6 months after the games release im starting to worry people arent making any! Theres no shortage of mods & extra vehicles etc, but very few actual missions :( Bardosys "chesty puller" campaign was spot on barring some lost in translation dialogue, but so far it seems to be the only one worth a mention!

I'm usually making addons, or sitting in the editor attempting to create missions. Rarely do I get one decent one. Every once in awhile I have a craving for MP so I head to the {Op4} Gaming server. Great teamwork.

I normally play over the net with one of my mates..We can't really be bothered with most of the servers so we set our own up. A simple mission where we both have to kick off is good fun...

We set a small camp up in a forest, kit it out with a few vehicles, not too many depending on the situation. We then have a base set up for the enemy. We'll put a good amount of patrols down, simple cycle waypoints with a large radius (at certain points).

We'll also have a simple respawn after 10 seconds if we die, simple couple of lines in descriptions.ext will sort that. Our last mission was at night trying to get to the lumber mill on chernarus. At the Lumber mill we placed a good amount of enemy armour. All parked up like a temporary base with a barracks and, if we are spotted (which often happens) certain ememy crewmen will jump in the tanks and try to get us.

Using things like trigger switches to break up a patrol cycle and the JoinAs command in certain units so they pool their resources and mount an attack in the forest we were spotted in makes it a tough mission.

It's great when you end up on a roof together trying to save each other's ass. Enemy patrols on the ground beneath us, hummers trying to pick us off etc..

The tried and tested convoy situation is great. Have a good few enemy vehicles and urals and so on continue down a road, we'd have to get there, at an ambush point, with a satchel charges and mines and watch them all blow up. A trigger that detects when everyone is dead is all ya need and makes it tougher when we have a few other enemy units sent to support the convoy if it comes into trouble.

Random waypoints with a random placement radius can make it great fun trying to slowly move across a forest, backing each other up. It's fun when you die and your mate is there hiding somewhere in enemy lines and you respawn back at the camp/base to have to try and rescue him..Sometimes if that happens to me my mate just speeds on to where i am in an APC...makes me laugh, but pretty much after that we both get killed, startr back at base and kit ourselves out and then go back on the mission....

End all this with an enemy base that you have to take out and it can make a very enjoybale 2-3-4 hours of gameplay for us......

THen it gets far too late and my girlfriend gets angry....she hates arma2..

There are certain things that get to me, though.

The AI is a little too great at times so you have to find a balance of skills, you are also much better off with trackIR (which I haven't got yet, but need it for DCS Black SHark and the A10C module when that comes out) and also a headset with a mic as communicating via text can be a little bit annoying....Works fine tho really if ya can type quick enough..

Sorry if that's long winded but thats pretty much all we use ARMA for.

Write a brief and give the map some detailed marker points, kit yourselves out with GPS and play on veteran and it makes the game pretty good fun.

Got the game, played the campaign for less than 4 hours, never played it again, grabbed user missions (get the SP/MP mission Seaze Zones & Cypher and play warfare missions).

I then sat twiddling my thumbs staring a refreshing the mods section untill the gems started to roll out, loading the editor and got on with the best part (and 80 percent of the point of it).

If I played campaign only and didn't get into editor (I dont play alot of MP .. yet) then I wouldn't be half as into things.

@touch off, try "Urban Patrol Script" for A2 ... save you a world of time :)

I like playing campaigns and casual multi-player. I'm also involved in making addons. What I use it most frequently for, though, is to have a run at a quick sp mission when I'm taking a break from something. I'd rather be playing campaigns or multi all the time but I don't have that much time on my hands.

To add to what DMarkwick and Touch Off have said of randomising a mission, synching an objective with multiple triggers will randomly place it all over the place, so it wont always be in the same place.

For Flashpoint and ArmA toadlife's Operation LoJack did this and used a cool feature to help you figure out where. I loved it, it was one of my most played missions in multiplayer and since then I always added the randomess in my own missions where appropriate. Adds heaps of replayability because not only do you not know where the enemy will be, but the mission objectives are randomised as well.

Out of interest has LoJack been converted to ArmA2?

EDIT: To keep ontopic; mission editing primarily. Coop with friends is what I prefer but it takes alot of time.

Coop only, when I'm actually playing. More than I would wish on public servers, since "my guys" don't have the same dedication as me. Read: They actually have a life :D

Other than that, most of the time is spent on setting up and planning large coop mission campaigns that I don't have the skill to create. So they will never see the day of light :) So far and right now, FDF_Podagorsk seems to offer the best area for this. Also tested other islands, but they often have some weird problems or being "too extreme".

Sometimes I go more serious with SP games and even more hardcore MP coops, but actual "game time" has dropped lately due to being involved in other stuff.

Yes, but the port doesn´t live up to the original.

We´ve played the 1st version in a 4 man group and found it to be rather dull.

Inclusion of BI Modules for first aid script have not proven to be a good choice, yet the rest of the actual mission goes under in a rubble of other ArmA2 necessities. It simply isn´t what it used to be. Search for W0lle and LoJack on these forums and see for yourself, but imho it cannot reach Toadlife quality.
