What DO you like in ArmA?

Recommended Posts

THIS TOPIC IS NOT INTENDED TO POST YOUR OPINION ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T LIKE. THERE ARE ENOUGH TOPICS FOR THIS.

Since there are obviously a lot of bugs and downsides on the current ArmA (1.02), I created this topic as a counterpart to keep balance, so people can tell what they LIKE about ArmA. Please tell what you think is a feature you really like AND IT WASN'T THERE IN VANILLA OFP! (Or was not that good in OFP)

Ok I start right away:

- ANIMATIONS

I think BIS did a very good job on the animations. I like very

much that the soldiers move when standing and waiting or

 when sitting in cargo.

- FAUNA & FLORA

I like the moving trees and grass. Also the birds and insects

 contribute to a live atmosphere.

- DAWN, DAY, EVENING, DUSK TRANSITIONS

I think BIS has improved the transitions very well. It's not

not getting that pitch black at night, it's rather realistic. You

can notice this particularly when full moon.

- DESCRIPTION OF TOWNS, FORESTS, HILLS, VALLEYS, BAYS

I really fell in love with the new Sahrani map. I love that

nearly every town, hilltop, big forest or big valley has its own

name. Besides this the chosen names sound very good and

 fit in as a whole.

- SWIMMING

I really like this feature. Adds some new tactical possibilities.

- MULTIPLE GUNNER POSITIONS

The first time I really started to find it useful, was when I

played as tank commander and my gunner was busy

shooting at an enemy tank while I could wipe out RPG

soldiers with the commanders gun. I really like it!

- HDR (HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE)

It simply looks beatiful when the sun strikes your eyes, or

when standing under a tree in shadow and everything around

 is in sunlight.

- SOUNDS

Although weapon sounds are rather poor (use @ModWar) the

environmental sounds are great in my opinion. I like the rain

sounds, the wind blowing or the movement sounds. I.e.

running on street, grass, gravel sounds very good to me.

Also the vehicle sounds are a lot better than in OFP.

- MODELS (UNITS, WEAPONS)

I really like the level of detail of the soldiers and the

weapons. (except the M240 and M249).

That's right now from my side.

Feel free to post what YOU like.

Well, you almost got them all their, at least for me that is.

I only like to add, that I LOVE the city architecture, the southern cities have really nice streets and are very detailed.

Also I love the way the water is effect by the weather, but this was allready done in OFP:E biggrin_o.gif

Yes, you seem to have listed the majority here. What I already like about ArmA is that thanks to great enviroments, lightning and detail in the world of ArmA the fun playing with high quality community-made addons will be even bigger than it was in OfP! biggrin_o.gif Can't even imagine how good stuff like BWmod, OWP or RHS addons will look like made for ArmA.

Long story short; I like the potential it holds for the future yay.gif

Most of the features I like, have been mentioned already. One important feature I really like is join in progress. No more endless reassigns due to people dropping off, coming in late etc smile_o.gif

I'm starting to really like the gun sounds, having disliked them initially. I love the way the high frequencies get lost over distance, so all you hear is a bassy, drum-like pounding. I also love the mini sonic booms when rounds fly nearby, makes me jump every time crazy_o.gif

P.S. Oh yeah and all of the above.

Weapon sounds in the demo sound very good in my opinion. Definitely an improvement over Operation Flashpoint. Sounds have a major part in creating the right atmosphere in this type of game.

Coop.

The ability to slow down the pace of the game to realistic/boring levels. Where you man a checkpoint or march for an hour.

Offroad clubs. Adding a couple of 4x4s, roaming and racing Sahrani with friends.

Dust-to-dawn, dawn-to-dusk. Looking at Orion, Casiopia and Polaris. Seeing the clouds pass and turn pink.

Generally I just like being inside the engine with my bros, but I also like the whole soldiering aspect, military realism, decent balistics and humping from A to B.

I have noticed that you can conceal yourself in the environment a lot better than in OFP. Yesterday I played a whole 30 minutes as sniper in a CTF game, I changed places only twice and was never killed or spotted from the bushes.

I like the fact that the G36 is no more a super accurate handheld nuke that kills you if you get shot in the toe, it brings a bit more balance to the game.

ArmA looks wonderful. It would look even better if my computer was better than the minimum requirements.

I think every aspect of the game is brilliant. The best bit about it for me (like OFP) is that addons can be made and scripts can be made for anything you want in game. i Also agree the graphics are superb.

VOICES:

I like that a lot of commands that didn't have sounds in OFP are now added in ArmA i.e.:

- plant charges

- detonate

- rearm at..

SHADOWS:

Although a lot of people turn them off because of performance, I think they add a lot of atmosphere. I really like the shadows of the trees, palm trees, and how the shadows of objects cast on other objects.

Oh yeah, I forgot the most important one:

I love the sheer AMBITION of ARMA (and OPF). When I was a kid I used to dream of a game where you could fight infantry battles over vast maps while your friends flew dogfigfhts overhead. That was back in the Amiga days and it seemed a complete fantasy for years until BIS arrived. For that, I will forever feel in their debt!

^ YES ^ Extrodinary ambition.

All the above, plus ArmAs open engine .  If this thread remains for another year or so, we'll watch ArmA age like a fine wine.

I think ArmA is the only game with a good slipper simulation.

Try out some of the civilians with them, slow down time and observe. Such attention to detail. crazy_o.gif

Hahaha, yeah.

Its the little things like that, the attention to the tiniest of details that gets overlooked for the "bugs" that dissapoints me.

ArmA as a whole is not only incredibly ambitious, it pulls off that ambition of scale REALLY well (ok it'll be better when the performance is tweaked).

People complain about the graphics, seriously I think they're freaking awesome. Where else do you get 400 square km to play on with hundreds of soldiers which each have a polycount of somewhere around 6-8k (eduacated guess) AS WELL as tanks, cars, helicopters etc etc?

Not even HL2 with its oh-so-wonderful Source engine pulls that off (average poly count there is 4k, with "Heroes" like Alyx around the 8k mark) and even then it can only cope with maybe 50 or so AI in one zone...

For all its minor niggles, ArmA is has a MASSIVE potential to be or do ANYTHING the competent mod maker can think of. And for that, BI gets my continuing props. Much props BI notworthy.gif

Next to most of the things mentioned already, I do love the sounds in particular.

Playing Arma with a headset is mandatory to experience the sounds the right way. The distant "Clak clak clak" of AK's sound like the real thing to me.

I also noticed that sound is being reflected from hills and stuff .. or at least it seemed like that. Awesome.

That's the best Tourism simulation ever...

Honestly, I think I spend more time driving around, sightseeing and looking for folkoric spots than actually shooting people or blowing stuff...

The atention to details, environment, grass, sound etc... is so cool, that I'd be just as happy if it didn't had any mission but just the editor. Maybe a picnic mod...

THE ONE BEST THING ABOUT ARMA : FREEDOM

I pretty much like everything about it... even the things I don't like. I don't like the way the helicopters behave, but I love to fly them. I don't like that every shot is a tracer, but I love to see those things skip down the street or bounce off some oblique surface and reeaally sloooow dooown in a high parabolic arc. I've only played the demo and I'm really looking forward to playing the full thing.

I agree with you on everything except this, ok the sunlight looks nice, but turning around messes with your brightness in a ridiculous way and its annoying after playing for a while. (the only real reason for me to stop playing once i started, well, except for real life crap tounge2.gif )
