ArmA Progress Updates

Recommended Posts

the odds are we'll hear news about Game2 and ArmA (If its not out by then) at E3 in May, and Game2 will probly come out Later next year as already stated, or H1 07.

oh, i totally forgot about e3 crazy_o.gif ! well, i would then assume that there will be big info about arma at e3 (demo?) and maybe some short info about BIS´ fancy next project, but i highly doubt they will throw out game2 just a couple of months after arma. imo even a H1 2007 release would be quite optimistic...

I doubt they would release a demo without knowing when the game will come out or having a publisher, ingame footage and screens, articles and feature lists are very welcomed at this stage smile_o.gif .

Quote[/b] ]The M60 continued to be used a door gun on Army helicopters into the 2000s, and as the main 7.62 mm MG in some U.S. special forces in to the late 1990s and SEALs into the 2000s. As of 2005, it is used by the Coast Guard, Navy, and in a number of reserve forces, though it is gradually being phased out in favor of versions of the M240. The weapons can still be found in use in the Army, and special forces in other roles.

Quote[/b] ]The M249 replaces the two automatic M16A1 rifles in the rifle squad on a one-for-one basis in all infantry type units and in other units requiring high firepower.

... means that the M249 has been mostly used by 'soldiers' and not by 'machine gunners', I don't think that BIS will make regular soldiers carry M249 SAW, I'm quite sure that the soldier showed in ArmA pic is a machine gunner, not from the cold war crisis, though, because 'mg soldiers' were using the M60 as main light machine during the whole cold war crisis.

According to BIS previous ArmA pics, the M16A2 is used as well, and it's still used by the current 'US army'.

Why would BIS replace the M60 by the M249 for a CWC theme?

This doesn't make sense to me.

But maybe I'm wrong, best to wait for more detailed infos about 'ArmA' then.

I believe that the m249 replaced the M60s in squads in the later 80s. The m60 was then used as a platoon and company weapon while the SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) was given to squads. According to the US Army Infantry Fieldbook (which I cannot presently find) the squad contains:

1 Squad Leader

2 Fire Team Leaders

2 Grenadiers

1 Dragon

2 Automatic Riflemen (with m60s)

3 Riflemen

I don't have any concrete proof to back this up at this moment but I believe that it is true. I know that FAS says it replaced the browning but according to my sources the m60 was used by the automatic riflemen in the early 80s.

Either way though the game looks great I am not really concerned too much about the accuracy of the game as long as I am not using lasers. That kind of stuff can always be changed by a mod later on.

Well if ArmA comes out early next year, and BIS finds a publisher for that and Game2... then its still possible to see a Game2 release in 06. I mean it would be close to the ArmA release, but still if its ready and the ArmA delay dosn't transfer over... its possible we'll see it next year. If not ArmA will be there to hold us over.

As for info and a demo at E3... it really depends I guess on when ArmA comes out. If Arma comes out in February, then who knows. We might see a demo as early as the end of the year. The one thing thats probly very safe to say is we probly won't see a demo before ArmA has a publisher.

As ArmA progresses, I think BIS will include various other features. Looking at the progress during the last couple of months, and release date pushed back half a year.

All this indicate that BIS have gotten new ambitions with Armed Assault. Ondrej even mentioned in an Interview, that ArmA was developing into a ofp2 more than just a ofp 1.5.

I do think that we will be seeing alot of new features being added during the next couple of months. Even though they have stopped accepting new sugestions here on the boards, im pretty sure that the ArmA team in the BIS HQ, prague, are using experience from the OFP2 team located in a different town (I think its in the northen part of Czech Republic.).

They will, however, be very catious about making arma just as good as game2 - so I don't think that we will see the dynamic AI and world that will be included in game2. I dont think that we will see much more improvement with the graphics though - most will be bug fixes like the water etc. Maybe we will be seeing new textures on some of those vehicles - and new vehicles smile_o.gif

It looks like they actually have gotten som finished vehicles in the game now - instead of the screenshots in august, which had stand-in vehicles imported from VBS (Didn't work too well - look at the truck with the missing axes for example).

I do hope that we will get a pile of news on OFP2 when Arma comes out, for surely they must be working on the two games side by side now?

Wasn't that Placebo? And wasn't it you who conducted the interview? biggrin_o.gif

Edit: Oops, it was XeLSiS, don't know why I thought it was you. But you do have it on your website wink_o.gif

Personally my guess is that it was delayed for lack of a publisher. We know they don't have one yet, and are looking for one. So its very likely thats the reason, and they are useing this time to polish it as much as possible. It really is too late in the game to be adding in a ton of new features they had not originally planned for. For all we know the game could come out in 2 months... and even if it goes the full six months, thats still a rather short time to add in major features and get them polished.

As for the ArmA is more like a Game2 then 1.5 comment.... I think from what we know for sure about ArmA, thats a very true statement. The graphics are better, the islands are bigger, battles will likely be larger, MP will be a LOT better, environments will be better populated... I mean all this DOES make this into a Game2 more then OPF1.5. That statement was also made months ago... so alot of these features we are hearing about now could very well be what he was talking about.

I really believe that comment ment ArmA was being reworked so much from the old game, that its more or less a new game of its own. Not that its looking more like, and useing features from, the actual Game2... and thats why he goes on to say that Game2 should now be called Game3. I mean don't get me wrong, I would absolutly love Game2 feature in ArmA (I really want lego buildings sad_o.gif), and I think ArmA is going to be an amazing game... I just don't see major features from Game2 makeing their way to ArmA, or new features being added from here on in.

Of course that dosnt mean there aren't features already in ArmA that we don't know about yet.

aint you thinking WHY they aint having publisher? Maybe noone of'em doesnt count on success of the product? Just an assumption

I'm no game publisher, but if I saw this from OFP...

icq0eh.jpg

...I wouldn't even think about the company developing a bad product wink_o.gif

I have a feeling publishers aren't doubting the success of a product by BIS.

It was said in an interview that there were several intrested publishers at E3. Sometimes it takes a while to see who will be the best one.

Look at some of the crap games that get published... some of the games out there prove you can get anything published if you want. And from what we have seen, there will be little trouble for ArmA to find a publisher.

you know, one detail - "2001". If OFP would be selled todays, i dont think it would have such success. So the general question is: did BIS updated OFP to 2005 year level. That's what i'm talking about

Not quite. wink_o.gif

1 Squad Leader

2 Team Leaders

2 Grenadiers

2 Auto Riflemen (M249)

2 Riflemen (usually w/AT4)

Dragons and M60s were platoon-level weapons (they were supposed to belong to the Weapons Squad unless it was a mech unit - they'd have 6 men to a squad with one Dragon).
