John Kozak 14 Posted June 25, 2014 (edited) What I've noticed in the past few dev updates is that the gunshot sounds of NPCs appear to be.... delayed. There have been many occasions where and enemy has been firing at me, and then when he dies, I hear his final shots around a half second later after he dies. I haven't been able to get consistent results or a video of this so I haven't made a ticket about it yet. Anyone else experience this? Welcome to the real world, where sound has speed :-) Not a bug, new feature - sounds are not instant now. Edited June 25, 2014 by DarkWanderer
qantaqa1987 10 Posted June 25, 2014 (edited) Grenades sound awful! like fart of a skunk.. I hope this isn't the last soundsample! (DEV branch) should be more like Edited June 25, 2014 by qantaqa1987 link
Brisse 78 Posted June 25, 2014 Grenades sound awful! like fart of a skunk.. I hope this isn't the last soundsample! (DEV branch) should be more like There are two sound samples for grenades ingame. One of them are kind of wierd. That video does not really represent the sound of a hand grenade very well though. It's something that is very hard to capture on video and has to be experienced IRL to really understand.
2nd ranger 282 Posted June 25, 2014 Yeah, we need to somehow dispel this myth that YouTube sounds are the same as real life. Too many people think so.
instagoat 133 Posted June 25, 2014 At a distance, I notice machineguns on tanks especially cutting out badly or not playing samples at all when rapid firing. As if the samples are swallowing and cancelling each other out. Further, the sound aliasing when firing tank guns is still present, as well as on some other weapons/vehicles. Video here: This sound bug is currently especially bad inside the tanks, on all guns. Machineguns even cause audible electric buzzing artifacts (overload?). qantaqa1987 10 Posted June 25, 2014 (edited) Too many ppl think skunk fart is goood explosion sound.. I would take the youtube explosion. And have to say that real grenade sound's different but as we have seen BIS wont make "real" sounds, so closer we go happier i am. :) And btw is it me or why i hear bullet crack from bullets that fly 15m over my head. Never been shot at, so really dont know should it be heard? (my Arma combat sound experience is like 70% sonic crack) Edited June 25, 2014 by qantaqa1987 Gf adjusted my spelling. 2nd ranger 282 Posted June 25, 2014 Oh, I wasn't saying that the newish grenade sound is good, it's dreadful. I'm just saying don't believe what you hear on YouTube.

Fushko 59 Posted July 1, 2014 "Tweaked: Spatialization of loud sounds" Not sure what spatialization means, but may it have to do with loud sounds cracking?
Brisse 78 Posted July 1, 2014 "Tweaked: Spatialization of loud sounds"Not sure what spatialization means, but may it have to do with loud sounds cracking? No, it's about how you percieve where the sound is coming from. Another word to describe it is sound localization. There has been a lot of complaints from surround sound users, I belive they are trying to rectify that.
Greenfist 1863 Posted July 1, 2014 Haven't tried this yet myself but the "tweaked" doesn't sound very comforting. I'm having huge trouble hearing the direction of loud sounds in stereo setup. I hope this will improve it.

Greenfist 1863 Posted July 1, 2014 And that's kind of expected in stereo setups. I use a virtual 7.1 surround headset and I can assure you that positional audio in the game is great. I meant I can't even tell if the loud sound is coming from left or right; like a gunshot 20 away. The volume is nearly identical in both speakers. In Arma 2 I could pinpoint the direction (and distance) by turning my head 90 degrees and back. So you would recommend a surround headset for Arma? Even just for Arma? I thought the surround sound didn't work too well.
haleks 8212 Posted July 1, 2014 "Tweaked: Spatialization of loud sounds" Goddamn,I hope the devs are gonna do something for the horrible wind audio! It is so boring to always hear the wind in your right ear - not to mention strange artifacts occuring after some time (it often sounds like two samples are being played at once). I always end up setting the wind strentgh to 0 in my missions... *Sigh* Arma2 was so much better in that regard. But it seems that the audio tweaking only concerns weapons, unless I'm wrong? neodammerung 8 Posted July 1, 2014 Since JSRS won't be updated anymore and the latest updates from BIS broke the mod I went back to vanilla... Oh god I had almost forget how awful it was, back to JSRS even if it's broken as hell and the cycling sound is louder than the shot itself it's still better than vanilla :(

The bugs that are present in stereo also apply to surround though, like the reload sound not being positional in multiplayer.
Greenfist 1863 Posted July 1, 2014 I just tried the today's dev branch and the stereo effect is insanely better than before! Now the gunshots are only omni-directional only up to maybe 2m distance from the shooter. Beyond that, it's very easy to detect the direction. Excellent news for us stereo headset users! vegeta897 13 Posted July 1, 2014 So you would recommend a surround headset for Arma? Even just for Arma? I thought the surround sound didn't work too well. Good virtual surround isn't really in the headset itself, it's in the hardware/software that does the virtualization (converting the game's surround sound channels into a stereo mix that has the proper processing to trick your ears). If you already have a headset you like, I recommend getting one of these, it offers virtual 5.1 and it works quite well in Arma. Razer's free software also works just fine in Arma, but I don't like how it muddies the sound a bit.

Never been shot at, so really dont know should it be heard? (my Arma combat sound experience is like 70% sonic crack) Well when ya hear firefights waaaay off in the distance you can still hear the crackling from the bullet snaps echoing off trees and buildings. It's as loud as a whip crack so... use that as a basis. Also, look to fireworks for grenade explosions, you've all been near fireworks before right? Doesn't sound like what you get in game (or on youtube, with a camcorder...) . Keep in mind though that grenades explode with far, far more velocity so the sound is different but... not as much as I expected TBH.
Brisse 78 Posted July 2, 2014 Difference between fireworks and grenade: Grenade is much louder than most fireworks, and you can almost feel the ground shaking underneath you as it goes off. The sound is pretty loud even if you are several hundred meters away from it.
