midrange terrain texture replacement

the goal for this addon is to provide a texture replacement for the default midrange texture.

my priority was to create something pleasing to the eye that resembles what you see close up and thus creates a seamless transition between close and mid/long range.

Usage:

extract the @BaBe_midTex folder to your arma 3 folder. then activate the addon in the main menu under "options->Expansions".

move the active version into the "off" folder and the one you want to replace it with into the addons folder to switch between versions.

Rules:

feel free to experiment with the textures for private use (do what ever you like).

if you release something however (that includes posting download links in public places) release it as a separate version with a new name (name of the pbo)

and don't use my textures or modified versions of them for your own addon!

yup sorry. i changed the folder name for the different resolutions:o. update inbound...

EDITT: well that was embarrassing...good thing i noticed it so fast. and thx for pointing it out too. have fun.

EDIT: i just realized that the "before after" is switched in some pictures. to make it clear the first picture start with the before and switches to after. from there on it should be clear;)

Nice! It looks good in most screens, that first scoped shot it looks a little strange, but I think if this gets refined further itll be perfect!

for curiosities sake...what if you used that as a long range texture?

awesome good job! Btw is that me, or do armas ground textures look unrealistic bright/non contrast? Could u increase a bit contrast/decrase gamme a bit for textures?

unfortunately the are huge limitations to what i can do with an addon like this. as i mentioned in the first post the engine uses only one single tiled texture as an overlay for mid range. so all i did was change one single texture. unfortunately it will never be perfect for all places/terrain types.

i'm too tired to explain the whole system right now but it comes down to that this is just one layer of several that are used to create the mid range terrain texture procedural in real time so to speak. so while close range consists of a single tiled/repeating texture long range is a huge texture for the whole terrain with individual details for each place. in between you have a blend of the long range and the texture i changed since the long range texture would be too blurry up close on its own. i hope that makes it clear.

if you are talking about the texture itself then yea i will make different versions later based on feedback. i understand that it might be a bit extreme of a change for some. but i wanted to make something that really changes the look and makes the difference very noticeable. i personally really like the roughness it creates right now but i get it's a matter of taste.

no, i'm talking about textures in general. BIS ground textures do look to bright in latest games. It was fine balanced in chernarus, but escpecially at takistan. They are lacking of color/gamma/contrast correction, looking way to bright, unrealistic.

no hit performance whatsoever and it is definitely a big improvement, however, it's a little generic. but i will be using this for now.

I don't see any difference between 1024 and 4096 (at least on those comparison shots by Predator). Hmm I guess if BIS will go with Nord's improvement 1k resolution is more than enough.

Nice work!

Already a great improvement to the current state!

But the system is still very limited. (engine wise) The textures may look nice at one point of the island but on another they wont.

And now imagine Altis with its 12 times bigger size! This definately needs another system for mid range textures.

But your work delivers a really nice view on how other textures can add to the game! ( I am allready using it;) )
