midrange terrain texture replacement

Recommended Posts

Sorry pal could you explain a little how to install this please.

I know how to use mod folders and use the landtex just now which is awesome.

Because this is a pbo. file when I unrar I am not sure where it goes.Usually they are in a folder with addons and such so I am a little confused with what to do.

I apologize for my ignorance M8 and cheers for your hard work on this,

Mick. :)

Edit: I made a folder called midtex.Inside that I created a folder called addons and put the pbo. into that.Enabled it through expansions.

Could someone tell me please if this is the correct procedure?

I think it is as it does look sweet but as I have landtex installed I am not exactly sure.

Thanks.

this is an experimental addon i made inspired by the discussions about midrange terrain detail. it's just the first incarnation but since i'm already kind of happy with the results i thought why not share it.

You good Sir deserve a standing ovation!

Yes.. as long as the folder has a @ before it i.e. @midtex

Thats the way I would do it.

@gentlemen:

I usually name my mod folders "@<modname>", but the steps with the "Addons" folder within, the pbo in the "Addons" folder and the activation in the expansions menu seems right.

@Darkxess:

Landtex definitly works with this addon. But in my opinion the default textures benefits more of this addons improvements.

With Landtex vegetation just seems "out of the place" and fits in way better with the green parts of the default texs.

Cheers guys,

I did put an@ before the mod folder and after playing a little I must say this is a great improvement over the stock textures.

Well done guys,awesome work. :)

How does it come, that the 4k textures look exactly like the 1ks?

Could you somehow increase the resolution of the 4k ones. Could you post the original textures here, so we can compare?

Increasing the res wouldn't make a significant difference, the tiling is too great at that distance, the higher res versions are being downsampled anyway.

I have just spend almost an hour making comparison shots.

I couldn't see ANY difference between the 1024 and the 4096 version.

So i'd suggest to take the smaller one (haven't tested performance yet).

well as i said this is just an experiment. so thanks for testing it more. to be honest i didn't notice any difference myself but wanted people to test because sometimes an extra pair of eyes can help noticing things.

yea i figured that much. but i wasn't sure since it's hard to compare without being able to have two instances of the game running at the same time.

no hit performance whatsoever and it is definitely a big improvement, however, it's a little generic. but i will be using this for now.

yea that's true but i have to be careful to add too much individual details since they repeat pretty quick due to the texture being tiled. i will update with an alternative version tonight. as i said before. talented texture artists are welcome to replace the texture with something different and show there screens here. maybe we can find something that fits almost every ground type.

couldn't wait;) here's a quick variation. i blended in the old midrange texture with a mask to make it look like it's a mix of dry patches and grassy patches. the biggest problem that was mentioned by someone is that roads and rock areas looked too grassy in the distance. this helps this specific issue a lot since it now fits more different ground types and is more open to interpretation more.

i still prefer the first version since it adds more fake shadows that give the scene much more depth in some places but this is definitely more flexible. i will try to find a place between the first and this one and post it tonight.

foxhound if you post this on armaholic please make it clear that this is not an update to overwrite the first one but a variation. i will provide an archive with 3 different versions to choose from tonight.

Someone give this man a medal, then include this (or something similar) in the next update.

Looking great! Gotta try it tonight.

With the current system of what generally looks like "spray painting a tiled ground texture", it's a question of choosing the right texture to fit most of the colors. The vanilla texture (mostly rocks n rubble) looks strange when it's painted green.

Your texture (what seems mostly grass/leaf clutter) may look strange when painted yellow.

From the screenshots I've seen, what I like the most about your texture is that it is "busier", seems like it's a more 3 dimensional ground. Although looking through scopes almost always breaks the illusion.

Looking forward to other possible versions!

Good work!

I don't understand how this was be achieved and I wonder how hardware-hungry this can be.

All pictures look more natural and beautiful, I hope that the developers agree!

ok this is the last update for now. i might come back to this later but i'm pretty happy with what i have so far.

download -> check first post

here are some comparison pictures but it's always better to try the different versions out yourself.

http://i.cubeupload.com/1egPQ0.gif

http://i.cubeupload.com/EiZWUW.gif

the download consists of 4 versions:

- original - the first version i provided for those who still prefer it (still my favourite along with strong)

- strong - a high contrast version with a lot of roughness

- medium - a more toned down and blurred out version to make it look less aggressive when zooming in a lot

- lite - like medium but even more toned down

move the medium version into the "off" folder and the one you want to replace it with into the addons folder.

this is as far as i will go in terms of choice since it's really easy to replace the texture if you aren't happy with what i provided.

i'm glad it makes most of you as happy as it does myself. have fun with it:)

i will update the first post with all versions released so far. some might differ just to a tiny degree but choice is always better.

Is it a replacement to the other 1024, or is it the third ?

:)

just download the final version (last link). it has all versions i made so far. the 1024 is just the second version and orig is the first. the 1024 in the file name is just a left over from the first download. all versions have the same resolution = 1024.

download the final version to avoid any kind of confusion. i'll actually remove the old links.

EDIT: first post updated. there shouldn't be any confusion now. i hope :o

Nice work.

I have just spend some time comparing the different versions and decided i'd prefer the second version.

i prepared some comparison shots for my community mates and want to provide them here:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/106806270/arma3%20midtex/Midtex_Versions.zip

If you are confused:

midtex4000 - first version

midtex 2nd - second version (my favorite as well)

mid tex medium - final version - medium

midtex strong - final version - strong

If you want, you can take these screenshots and make .gifs out of them, Benson. Your choice.
