Anyone else think BIS gave up on Chenerus too soon?

Recommended Posts

After not playing for several years I just started the Harvest Red campaign over again. I'm on Razor Two and still discovering things I didn't the first few times.

You spend a lot of time in the air and the thing that stands out is just how well designed the map is. So many little details everywhere.

Wish they'd stuck with it for a few larger expansions, perhaps entailing another large scale campaign. Seems like a lot of potential was wasted switching to Takistan so quickly.

not going to happen, they are working on ArmA 3.

I agree that Chernarus is very nice with still many places I have not seen tho if I had to make the choice between another official BI campaign there or OA and Takistan I'd always choose the latter.

I think this remain in the hands of the players and their mods

True, especially the beginning of Harvest Red was brilliant. The campaign turned out to be boring when they started this warfare thing. After the first DLCs had been released, I really hoped they would expand A2, maybe even upgrade it to OA standards. But now they will release A3 instead skipping every continuation of Chernarus :(

The problem is that with a map like Cher the detail is pretty heavy, and i think alot of people at the time didnt have the hardware like we do now to actually play it properly even now ArmA2 struggles in some extreme cases and im sure that even today most people still can't play it with the details maxed out, and so a map like Takistan which has less dense forests and foliage plays slightly better and is proberly alot more optimized. Not to mention the ongoing conflict in Afganistan which OA seems to be designed at simulating.

I just hope they dont come out with ArmA3 where we all need to upgrade our computers again and spend 1/2 our monthly wages on new hardware.

Over half the missions I've ever made are on Chernarus, and it dominated the scene before OA came out. I have a weak laptop, but it's worth the low fps. Far and away the best map they've released.

You're obviously going to need to upgrade for ArmA 3. Unless you bought a computer in 2009 that is good enough for 2012, which would have cost all your monthly wage.

i LOVE Chernarus. It´s has a soul or something, sometimes it´s deadly beaultiful and sometimes at night even haunting too.

it's actually not about giving up, it's more about that any update to Chernarus map would mean complete recompile of it's files and maybe some resources

so huge patch and ofcourse lot of work (as CH is way older map build than e.g. Shapur or Proving Grounds)

Anything in particular you guys really like about Chernarus? I'm working on expanding the country as a whole so I figure I could try to replicate that feel for you guys with my terrains.

Totally agree !! Chernarus and Harvest Red are the best terrain and best campaign (for Arma 2 and expansions) made by BIS !!

@Jakerod great idea !! I would like it to be huge as Chern with less big cities but more small villages (like Everon ;) )

Just to clarify, I was being more nostalgic then suggesting BIS do anything further with Chernarus.

I realize that ended with the release of OA.

The 'patchiness' of the terrain, with intermixed forest, thickets and those yellow fields. And the complexity of the overall heightmap. It's great when you can look across a valley and see multiple types of environments.

This is mostly because of the real world unique geological formations of Ceske Stredohori. Those extinct volcanoes are highly atypical for central Europe, and they make for 'dense,' variable terrain with many points of interest.

Looks like Vermont or parts of upstate New York in the U.S. Tertiary volcanics (~23 million years old) in a NE-SW rift/graben system. Some recent missions of mine will take you to the Devil's Castle and Black Forest areas:

Deep, dense forests and big hills along the western edge of Chernarus look inviting for future missions.

And there was me about to link to the GSEP islands!

To the OP, I think that Jakerod is doing exactly what you requested and has already built two maps that extend the region around Chernarus.

The only issue with Chernarus is the lack of enter-able buildings, if all buildings were enter-able like Zargabad nothing could rival Chernarus, even with these shortcomings Chernarus is probably the best ArmA2/OA map.

Chernarus was and is awesome. I was sick and tired of those desert/unspecifiedistan games. If it had enterable buildings, Chernarus would be king. So yeah, I think they gave up too early on Chernarus.

What I like so much about it is the size. The map size of course but also the villages aren't too big nor too small. They are placed believably into good positions and mostly have bigger clearings around them (for agriculture). It's no wonder since it's based on real locations, just smaller. But then it has flat lands, hills and big forests. And it's still colorful. Tho I wouldn't mind a map with summer or winter setting.

I also think Jakerod does a wonderful job at imagining the rest of the green sea. Can't mention that enough. I hope you'll do some more and possibly bigger maps!

Yep BIS gave up way too soon. There are still some models that have issues (like the barn through which AI can see, red brick building which you can bring down with a few rifle bullets to a window frame).

IMHO Cherna is the best map BIS has ever done. All building enterable is the only thing needed to make it perfect. The whole countryside is really authentic. By the way, why did you choose this region to become the playground for Arma 2?

Would it be possible to make a mod that replaces the standard buildings with enterable ones, like some of the vegetation replacement mods?

I agree one of the biggest disappointments with Chernarus was the lack of enter-able buildings. Ironically, I also find (and have since the release) these buildings to be extremely hard on the CPU, even though they are just boxes with some textures on. I find the lack of enter-able buildings does quite a lot of damage to the atmosphere also.

For some reason I also find that Chernarus does look really nice...but when I'm playing online it just never seems as pretty. Horrible LOD of bushes and trees and dead vehicles..I don't know what it is exactly, it just looks messy and lo res. When ever I play it online it just doesn't look that impressive at all. But if I load up the editor and just go for a "nature walk", looking at the graphics, it's gorgeous...very odd. Anyone else find this?

I think what the OP meant was not that they should have expanded the Cher map but that they should have made more use of it, i.e. more missions or a longer campaign. I absolutely agree with you bonchie, BIS underused this fantastic map which is a shame as huge amounts of work must have gone into it. Many good locations are completely unused such as the North Eastern town of Berezino, I think that particular town is so well made, and believable. There is an great mission that makes use of it in bardosy's 'Pirog', an excellent campaign as it is.
