Forum Template Design/Update/Removal

Recommended Posts

Sexy. Like the new theme more than the old one.

Looks more modern and I'm not a fan of bright colors anyway. :D

Only thing I miss is the Quick Links tab at the top right. (Next to User CP, Members List etc.)

Good feedback guys, it's work in progress so keep the constructive feedback coming and I'm sure we can reach a final version which works for the majority, never be able to please everyone obviously but we'll aim for the happiest % possible ;)

BIS designers might want to have a look here :)

For example the drop downs of the top menu (games, company) go under the forum text..)

Also the dropdown when clicking a username left of a post does not work anymore

But overall I like the unification of the themes. Takes some time to get used to I think.

I see they have changed the color a bit. Seems a bit more lighter and readable now. Perhaps one more shade lighter on the actual post window. I'm not sure. Just see if that works better. #ededed or something nearby perhaps.

Oh and the "Forum Jump" is still highlighted dark-grey with grey text.

I'm liking the new look. I'm not one to dwell on themes etc, any look is fine. But, I have a pragmatic problem identifying unread threads, they don't seem to stand out as well as they used to.

Whatever you do, please please please don't delete the old theme ever. I get the idea behind wanting all sites to have cohesion in their look/usage, but I'm too used to the old look and would love to keep it all the time. :) Thanks.

I think it has been said already, but making the skin automatically stretch to browser width (if possible) like on the old skin would really be awesome.

*edit cough*

Post Replay button? :D

It's WIP, we should all give it time. :)

Right now the buttons are being worked on.

First reaction to the new design was WTF, second was hmmm harder to read than the old design and somehow less eye pleasing, third was to think hmm it looks pretty modern though,fourth was to think "modern? Yes. But also like a hundred other game forums", fifth was switch back to the classic and perfectly readable design :)

Id say if you really need to edit the design then use the old default one and edit it subtile with some parts of the new design like the new header style and maybe a few new buttons and signs.

Yet i wouldnt make it much smaller and especially not make the fonts much smaller just because it looks more modern, also the colours are fine the way they are i think.

Just for kicks, I might redo how it's set up later. ;) Not sure if I got the stroke and headbar correct though.

#ededed is the current and #f5f5ff is from the default.

one of the reasons for poor readability is the font and sized used on the new template. It is too condensed for being easily readable.

Examples (sans serif font types):

Arial:

one of the reasons for poor readability is the font and sized used on the new template. It is too condensed for being easily readable. - DEFAULT on NEW temp

Verdana:

one of the reasons for poor readability is the font and sized used on the new template. It is too condensed for being easily readable. - DEFAULT on OLD temp

Trebuchet:

one of the reasons for poor readability is the font and sized used on the new template. It is too condensed for being easily readable.

Tahoma:

Lucida Sans:

I would stick to Verdana TBH

Using Opera 11.01, Vista - when the cursor hovers over a member name, the name is underlined, apparently indicating a clickable link, as in the old style. However, when one clicks on a name, no drop-down box of additional links appears, as it used to with the old style.

The Quote, Post Reply, et al. buttons seem incongruent w/ the new style.

Everything else, based on a quick skim, looks nice.

Edit: Actually, it is functioning properly in some forums, not all.

Edit 2: Browser specific, but it works fine in the old style - Edit text input boxes are compressed to an impractical form when using Opera's Fit-to-Width and Page Zoom functions, in combination (used to aid poor eyesight, particularly at night).

Exactly.

And honestly i dont come here for the fancy forum design but for info on ArmA2 and its modding so good readability is the main factor for me.

The fonts are standardized. It's normally the same fonts unless you change the settings in your browser.*

Default version:

font: 10pt verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;

WIP (1) version:

font: 10pt arial, tahoma, trebuchet ms;

WIP 2 version:

font: 10pt verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;

(*)Correction: Seems they've added a 2nd WIP option. In which case, I think the standard fonts are best. Arial, Tahoma, Trebuchet ms looks so strechty for me.

It depends on what template you're testing, there are actually two test displays (and the former one).

My first impression... WTF :confused:

I must say though it's a good idea to make all BI sites look unique. OK it was shocking to see the blue theme gone but I guess we all get used to it one day.

There's one thing though that should be changed: When something is selected from the Menu above, e.g. Games->ArmA2, the website is loaded in the same window/tab as the forum was. In worst case you write a lengthy reply on something, go to the Wiki from here and lose all text because the site was loaded in the tab you was about to make the replay.

All websites from above menu should be loaded in new window/tab instead.

There are also some blue buttons left which now are totally out of place.

Verdana is the better font tbh. Arial can't even distinguish between I and l.
