Jade Groove

Latest version: v1.0

Description

Once upon a time, there was a land that was having a terrible time. Raging wars tore up the planet and only few survivors now fight for the resources in order to survive. Oil reserves dried up, food was in short supply, and things were generally looking pretty grim. After uprisings due to energy shortages which destabilized the country, gangs began to terrorize the remaining survivors all over Jade Groove. Its only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage that will survive.

Factions

Four groups formed:

MFP (Main Force Patrol): The crumbling remnants of the government created a tiny, underfunded group of special highway patrol officers (MFP) to try and restore order to the Jade Groove highways. They use fast Interceptor II cars.

RAIDERS: the largest gang on island. They are terrorizing the already scarce local population, vandalizing property and stealing fuel and vehicles. They love to scavenge and they hate cops (MFP). They use custom-upgraded V8 cars that can cope with fast MFP police vehicles.

MERC (Mercenaries, AI only): biggest part of the country is controlled by them. They open fire on anyone in order to protect the fuel/equipment. They control all of the compounds, but their focus is to the Northern part of the island. They use US eqiupment and army vehicles.

CRAZIES (AI only): they lost everything and don't trust anyone anymore. They open fire on anyone approaching them. They wear old civilian clothes and use various personal weapons to protect their lives.

Vegetation

Not much remains in the desert except bushes and cacti trees. Scenery is a bit greener where fresh water is available (towns).

Military installations

Biggest strategic importance have oil pumps at 6 locations. Secondary are army bases with airports for air operations. Towns are mostly abandoned and offer shelter from scorching sun. There is a big mountain town at he middle of the map that is strategically important.

Settlements and towns

Only smaller towns that can be found near highways. Mostly abandoned or guarded by crazy folks.

Sightseeing tips

We would encourage you to travel by car if it would not be so dangerous. Roads can be very dangerous, especially with all the debris around. And any skid off the road can end in a nearby rock. Air assets are mostly not available except small but versatile gyro planes. A nice Morrowtown is only friendly looking place, everything else south of it is desert, rocks and remains of civilization. Oh, there is a nice fresh-water lake in the NE desert, but we wouldn't recommend swimming in it due to radiation. Fuel stations can be found at several places, but they offer gas at very high prices or are even rigged with explosives (reserved for owner use only).

Mission possibilities

Island v1.0+ comes with a mission JadeWars that is a mission that can be played in all modes: SP/Coop or TvT! Be sure to check it out. Other mission ideas: defend outpost, escort fuel convoy to the distant town, find and destroy gang camps, search and rescue, etc.

Installation:

As we always recommend use modfolders.

Check our FAQ for a clear explanation.

Included .pbo files:

jadegroove.pbo

jadestuff.pbo

+ units&cars are in separate addons that can be found on my website!

Original post 28.2.2010:

Hi guys!

I'm wondering if there is any interest in a new map I *might* produce in the near future for ArmA 2, so I need your feedback. Inspiration for this map is an old 1997 game Interstate '76 made by Activision. A powerful story, great driving (for that time) and of course, scenery out of a classic movie Mad Max along with American Muscle Cars. SigmaSix made a great muscle car pack and hopefully we will see it in A2 too (or does the A1 content work, didn't test it yet?).

In order not to breach any copyrights all material and map design would be made from scratch, brand new map design, no content whatsoever from game used.

Desert would be the main theme with couple of gas stations and forts/outposts already pre-placed on map for mission makers to use them. Roads would also lead to high mountains with cliffs where bad driving gets you killed for sure.

Map wouldn't feature any urban areas, it would be more like "post-apocalytic", maybe only one bigger army base and abandoned houses. Its a map that would be intended for talented mission makers who would recreate a "Mad Max" world for PvPvAI or Coop action. What do you think?

Not yet, still in the planning phase. And too bad OFP has CarWars mod with couple of "Arizona-feel" islands while A2 is somehow left behind.

Heh, Interstate 76 was a great game at the time.

I tried bolting some weapons on the roof of the orange Hemicuda (by Sigma6) back in Arma. It looked so much like Groove Champion's car I couldn't resist. I even made some police roadblocks scripts (using Sigma6 polics cars) and made littlebird helos hunt you down (cobra was too deadly).

I didn't improve it for few reasons. 1) AI cannot drive so you can make only humans hunt you down with cars 2) fixed guns on roof shot 99% of time over the target.

I hope you can complete your project. It would be nice to have a big Interstate mod.

"Stampede, this is Vixen. Code Sixpack, repeat Code Sixpack! Request Mode four randevouz!" ;)

This would be Ultra-Groovy! :D Every now and then I wish for an Interstate '76/Mad Max/Dark Future mod. If you do this island we'll be one leap forward.

(There might be a few younger people reading, who have no idea what this thread is about :) For your edification see this

I would like to see this type of map in A2,we already have technicals for some highway battles.

If you don't plan urban areas, maybe perhaps one small town or city for the ultimate prize?

I would be interested, I loved the first Mad Max. If the MFP patrol cars were released for it at some point as well that would be the icing on the cake (for me).

Loved interstate, loved the Car Wars mod for OFP.

Its a totally different type of project from "Kiska/Skira", probably quicker and easier, so I'd say go for it!

...... I can see me moding up a truck with a bunch of MGs hanging out the back :D

What about that buggy you sometimes have in your sig, Gnat??? :D

Sounds like a good idea and a refreshing change! As Gnat says, the terrain should be fairly straightforward... high dust factor for offroad driving, ruins, etc.... great!

Its one of those ideas that kindof depends on a few "madmax-style" vehicles and stuff to really get the atmosphere... Still... if you make the island, the addons will come I'll bet...

Sounds like a great idea. Go for it!

Gnat's gun truck idea is awesome, and maybe Celery could port his new vehicle DM to it.

Now you have me drooling... :D

Mad Max (the first one of course) is one of my favorites too.

This is a great idea, interstate76 was awesome and that kinda island would look great in ArmA2. If anyone doesn't know what that game is, its basically the precursor to Vigilante 8, which I think was for the original playstation. If someone made some cars with machine guns and FFAR's I would play it as much as ACE. Would need a few jumps though, as long as they didn't look too unrealistic.

JDMT: I do, you can guess it... but I use it mainly for coop projects and less for tips/help ;)

LeftSkidRow: don't worry, there would be jumps across canyons and missing bridges. I've heard AI troops destroyed them in anger because they have trouble understanding how to cross them ;)

Lol, also just thought of some other things you could consider: aircraft boneyard, trailer park, secret military base?

Some of that would be difficult without new models though.

Serious Badness  You don't happen to have a spare gyrocopter lying about in your HD, Gnat? ;)

Also, not wanting to mis-steer the thread subject (island making after all), but scanvenging parts & supplies and modifying the vehicles was a big part of Interstate '76. Might be doable to some extent if some heavyweight scripters'll lend a hand.

In any case Jade Groove island would rock :D

I'll probably have a map of the island together soon, and I'll need your feedback/requests so we can improve the plan :) keep tuned.
