I don't object if you get it wrong. I don't mind if everyone else in this forum gets it wrong. But for me, it is a matter of professional pride.

So the developers themselves - Bohemia Interactive - have no idea what the correct abbreviation for their title is?

Get a grip...

Why would they?

They are computer programmers not language instructors.

When it comes to the correct use of the English language, I'm pretty sure I do, yes.

I'm not the kind of person that imitates wrong people just to fit in.

If you wish to learn the correct application of English grammar, in future, I suggest you consult Murphy's or Swann rather than Czech gaming companies, gamer websites and Google.

if uoy kepe tpyngi OpF i kpee tyipgn liek thsi.

I do have to wonder how you write Crysis then...

How I write it, or how I abbreviate it?

both. your problem is that you end up calling that a day equals 12 hours, when all scholars have agreed and created global term day with length of 24 hours.

Your call does not equal the global agreement thus OpF in god's hell, doesn't equal to OFP, as we have agreed GLOBALLY.

You get me, ugh? If you still don't, then boy, you have a long problem to agree with global terms.

And if you bring the idea that the apprevation should be called from first letters only, then in actual reality, it would be OF. because there are only two words. not OpF. But we all have agreed to call it OFP. Calling it OpF does not make you special. It makes you dumb for creating your own messy apprevations. (it's akward and not interesting)

AFAIK abbreviations are made by taking the first letter of each word (even in doublewords (hey, i'm german native but i try my best)).

Micro

Soft

Advanced

Micro

Devices

Operation

Flash

Point

This is common practice in abbreviations but i'm sure you're a thousand times smarter than all of us.

@Admin/Mod

I know this is OT at it's best. Can't you make a own thread out of this since i find this very interesting.

I haven't agreed to nothing, i just call it OFP because the most do it so, but i know that's not correct. To say BIS know how to call theyr product correctly can't be true, you remember "setdammage"? ;)

While "Op" is the common abbreviation for Operation, in every language. So he hasn't create his own messy abbreviation (still with two "b", not "p" ;) ), but "we" do it with OFP.

My opinion on this is language is a matter of convention only. There is no way to tell which language convention is right or wrong - you need to speak following the conventions, otherwise other will not understand you.

Example: what is correct past tense of "I do"?

I did or I doed?

How this applies to OFP vs. OpF I let as an exercise to a reader. :)

As far as I remember there even was a funny controversy going on when OFP/OPF was released. Some called it OFP, some OPF. I guess even among the developers there was no coherent standard for the name. :pet7:

Yes, we've already had a few discussions about this. Although I couldn't find this thread on the new forums I did find this thread about OFP vs. OPF in the old Ikonboard forum, written some 4 years ago. The majority used the abbreviation 'OFP' rather then 'OPF'.

Other varieties are OF (OpFlash) or FP. Note that the letters are still in the same order, they just lose one of the letters:

I always refer to it as OFP, or sometimes OpFlash...but that's just me.

Major Fubar (Sep. 02 2004)

As I am spoiled and I always need to have something special for me, I select FP.

When talking (or thinking) about the game, I almost always use only the word "Flashpoint".

-Suma (Sep. 03 2004)

And seeing that this forum have been the primary forum to the original Operation Flashpoint before Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising ever existed, it should be concluded that "OFP" is the fan's abbreviation for the OFP-series. Series or what ever is the right term these days.

Could we get back to topic now? :p

What we are talking about here is not a proper english abbreviation but a brand name and/or short hand internet typing. ArmA is not a correct abbreviation of Armed Assault either. However you contract Operation Flashpoint should be fine as long as everyone knows what you're talking about. It's great to take pride in correct language, and it's also great to use the emergent, perhaps incorrect, yet widely used OFP. I think that 'OFP' has a nice ring to it when spoken, so I type it that way.

Hahaha!

I'm hoping its just that I have been drilled into believing the Flashpoint/AA set up is the only way to go, but I really must say the more I see the more I think 'oh god, they're screwing it up!'. But here's hoping for the demo soon.

go to google and google image, type in OFP... the results are pretty straight forward as you will find all the major OFP websites

now do the same with OPF...

(first result is Overseas Pakistanis Foundation, lmao :p)

When Operation Flashpoint (I don't use an abbrevation now) was released, my friends and me used to call it OPF. The only reason is that OPF can be pronounced as a single word without sounding stupid. It was the year 2001 and we were about 14 years old and when playing at a LAN someone came up with the idea to play "OOOOOOOPPPPPPPFFFFFFFFF" once again (yes like some kind of battlecry... remember: 14 years old :D).

And nobody really thought about calling it OFP.

But honestly, I don't really give a crap on how it is abbreviated as everybody knows what is meant with either OPF or OFP.

well for the record, the case of ArmA only apply to Armed assault 1, Suma had stated that from ArmA 2 onward there will only be ArmA if I remember correctly

Funny, i wanted to post how unpronouncable OPF is, but instead i made a ridiculous post a few pages back. When speaking i used to call it 'Opflap', completely pronouncing 3 letter abbreviations usually sounds retarded anyway. :D

Though personally i think its a bit weird to suddenly call it OPF after 5+ years of OFP.

Oh, I forgot to add that I'm German. Dunno about native English speakers, but we felt it was more convenient to say OPF rather than OFP. :D

completely pronouncing 3 letter abbreviations usually sounds retarded anyway. :D

That's true on some cases. UNO is ok. ETA is ok. GUS (CIS in English) is ok, USA is not ok :D

I think it really depends just on the sound. I remember Scary Movie 3 where the president (Leslie Nielsen) pronounced UN as a single word. Too retarded :D
