CAT's Afghanistan Revisited

Ag Smith sorry to be part of the dozens who ask for a revert to CAT's textures but I will have to.The island in itself is great and an obvious improvment from v3 but the textures made by CAT really put the island in a league of it's own and gave a great desert feeling.

If it's not to much will you consider making a new version,I am sure ofp.info wouldn't mind hosting it.

I don't really understand the complaint about textures, Resistance textures are already great by themsleves on this island.

Certainly CAT's ones were higher resolution, but the size textures can take in memory can have its importance when you try to make more important mission with fewer lag.

Hey thanks Smith!! FINALLY! a beautiful playerable island with no lag and u dont need tonnes of other addons to download just to open it ingame !!!! I could start WW3 on that island!

Hello everybody, I'm very glad you like it.

To answer a few of your questions:

1. I tried to keep it as lag-free as possible. I managed to keep object count below 25K and I think I achieved a very good effect. During testing, in most places I could play with viewdistance of 3000m and this is the first island that allows me to do that on my crappy PC. So no worries there.

2. There WILL BE an update. Thanks to fighter I got this nice trees:

They'll replace the current ones. You have to admit they blend in much better. I'll also add some more objects to the western part of the island which is still quite empty. I'm going to start working on it in a week or two, so that I could include any other suggestion, that you might come up with. smile_o.gif

3. What you all are asking about... textures... Reverting to BIS textures allowed me to cutdown .pbo size by 50MB. CAT's original textures still miss many transitions, so if somebody shows me the easy (automated) way to create transition textures, I could consider making SE version, that will use the old texes. smile_o.gif

A side note, the original CAT's textures were the same resolution as BIS ones, 512x512.

Yea, I know they added the unique feel to the island.... I liked them too. wink_o.gif

Great work, AGS.

I've played around the island and It's sure a great improvement.

The only thing that "hurt" me are the few things (rocks, waterpools) that were be moved here and there.....They're just the  same that serves me in the mission I'm currently editing, damn! sad_o.gif

I'm not sure what to do: modify the mission or still use the old version of the map....

The huge rock hill with ladder near Herat is moved west from the original position, half in the mountain and half in the air...

However, this remain a great improvement.

Sorry, this could happen... as for the rock with ladder, I'll make sure it will go back where it was. The waterpools are gone for good. They didn't look good nor realistic (thanks to OFP waves) so I decided to remove them.

The waterpools are gone for good. They didn't look good nor realistic (thanks to OFP waves) so I decided to remove them.

I saw one on my flyby, somewhere in the mountains.

Already a job well done, and with the updates trees and (possible) return of the old textures it's gonna be totaly awesome!!

I loved the old afghanistan island. And I truely love the update.

Agent Smith excellent work with the island, all the things that have been missing in the past versions are now all there smile_o.gif

Regarding the textures, reverting back to the previous textures will only increase the filesize marginally compared to the original size of V3. Madaussie last year removed about ~70mb or so from the file size by removing the unused textures in the .pbo file. It will still be large, but no where near the 144mb?? that it was 2-3 years ago.

Anyway Excellent work once again, makes me want to restart the nomad mod

Ag-Smith how about getting a few more tree models? If anyones feeling grateful enough to make them that is biggrin_o.gif or donating them to you like berghoff or anyone?
