andersgrim 0 Posted May 8, 2003 it sounds real great to me! And no matter what time it is - the modificationpossibilities will be amazing! You want modern war simulator? Wait half a year after the release, and i bet there are a thousands of mods making exactly that! Will any screenshots be published at the E3? Or is it yet too early for screenshots? can't wait can't wait can't wait can't wait can't wait can't wait as said b4 "Gonna be the best game ever"
SFG 1 Posted May 8, 2003 This will be one interesting storyline!
edc 0 Posted May 8, 2003 I've got mixed amotions. I'm happy there's more places then just vietnam, but my biggest problem with having it in vietnam was that it would be old weaponry. Hopefully they'll put code in so modern units can be added with modern technology. I do not want to be stuck back in the 70s.
Schoeler 0 Posted May 8, 2003 I think repelling the soviet incursion into Czechloslovakia in 1968 would make for a very interesting campaign scenario, as would the brushfire wars in africa. The engine itself is the most important aspect. Six months after release there will be campaigns about the Gulf War, Chechnya etc... The great mods we have now aren't going to go away folks, they are just going to get better. Who's to say they haven't started working on OFP2 stuff already? -TU--33ker 0 Posted May 8, 2003 i think there will be a campaign for everyone. some vietnam for the US, some afghanistan for USSR, some african country liberation for the guerillas, and a classical NATO vs Warsaw Pact war in europe. at least i hope so! this would be so great!!! cbfasi 4 Posted May 8, 2003 the leopard 2a5... we talkign 1970's here... Leopard 1's chieftains... M60s and M48's m113's t62, t72, btr60, btr50, pt76, mi24a this is a rough idea of what is around in the early 70's ok we dont have the composite armours like today, this will make this a much more interesing period as a number of unoffical addons have covered the nwer kit, this way they are going for a range of kit that has not really been doen much yet. Vikingo 0 Posted May 8, 2003 Three diferent places!! Those are GREAT news for many of us that fears about Vietnam... Quoting mytself in others posts: </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I fall in love with Flashpoint since the first pics and videos of 1998/99 and these unofficial news about a sequel in Vietnam put me sad. I think if the game is placed there the quantity of units will be really short. Charlie didn't have many hi tech weapons/vehicles for put in the game. Sure with the great engine OF2 will have the thing will be much different to any other game out there but I think is sad use all that power for a Nam game and not for use it in a fictional (or not) modern war simulation (ex: balkans) with many new vehicles and the ones inside OF but with many more details and better simulation (ex: machine gunner in tanks). Really I will miss the Red Army and the big quantity of units for each side and all the possibilities and fun that such thing give to us.  Maybe is to early for write all this but I just want to express the things I'm feeling right now after these news. I love OF "1" since the first pics I saw (I thought on that times that "this thing will be BIG" and now all we know how big the things are)<span id='postcolor'> and then (with a prophetic third-eye ) I wrote... </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Maybe OF2 will have a campaing set in Vietnam and other ones at other places of the world showing different conflicts (real or not) Maybe is too much for ask but I hope it will be like that so we can have plenty of the actual units and many more. Like I said before,I think Vietnam is too restrictive, OF can't walk back in this way! Sure jungle will be simulated in great way but I can't imagine OF2 with less units (and freedom) than the original one. It can't be!!! Can't be. Hope you are right and BIS are laughing with our fears about OF2...<span id='postcolor'> hehe!! so... Vikingo was not that wrong And they laught of us for sure and that is great. We will have other campaigns or missions in other places. So I'm very happy that BIS will do this and now I can say that I feel exactly the same now than in the past and I can think again: "this thing will be BIG" and that put me very happy. and the Red Army will be part of the game and is so nice (hope  this time radio voices will be full russian hehe little offtopic request) BIS will do it again! Thumbs UP!           Vikingo  before part of the anti-Vietnam group, now part of the group happy with the three places that OF2 will have!! YEAH!
Dr Lothrian Remar 0 Posted May 9, 2003 Hmm, deep jungle warfare to open deserts in the 70's! I can't wait, and for all those worried about the old weapons 1: You've just been playing with 20-year-old weapons in OFP 2: It will be a matter of weeks after OFP2 release before the Mod’s start coming i guess If its using a similar engine, the ‘Mod God's’ shouldn’t take too long getting reacquainted. Warin 0 Posted May 9, 2003 Personally I prefer the historical conflicts to modern ones. After all, there really isnt a lot of 'combat' in modern combat. It's mostly about air power. Call in the boys in blue, let them blow the crap out of everything, then mop up. Whee. So much fun. The thought of a GOOD Vietnam game is pretty cool, as far as I am concerned. the fact that there will be three theaters of operation is amazing!
fraggit 0 Posted May 9, 2003 I was kind of dissappointed that it was going to be in Vietnam, but then again BIS is making it so.... BUT this is great news. Three theaters, wow... Although is anyone else worried the game might have the "impassible wall" since we're dealing with continents? Or did I miss something? I agree with Warin, modern day combat is just jets bombing the shit out of stuff. But I have to admit, thermal imaging sounds kinda cool.

But I still wouldn't be surprised if maps do have a limit on how big they can be. Maybe it will be like OFP1: When you travel pass the maps limits, you just continue across/over infinite water. toadeater 0 Posted May 9, 2003 Is Christopher Walken going to be in OFP2? I like this idea of multiple theaters. As long as they're each given a good amount of complexity, such as weapons and vehicles for each setting. My uneducated guess is that this is all going to involve Gastovski, in his early years. Or at least either a veteran turned special forces/agent, or otherwise some renegade mercenary guy. It even leads things open for Guba showing up on several occassions. gonk 0 Posted May 9, 2003 Looking Great. A snippet from OFP2 site #################### Experience the intensity of modern-historical warfare Explore 3 large battlezones based on real locations covering Central Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa Drive and fly authentic vehicles and aircraft Command large squads with plenty of tactical and strategic options Play the campaign or solo missions Create your own mission and scenarios using intuitive built-in mission editor Full multiplayer support ##################### 3 Large battle zones ?? how big ? this is looking fantastic. I am guessing all conflicts will be fictional to stop the history buffs having a heart attack. Thx for the early info BIS.

The announcement is something of a surprise, as this is the first game in recent memory to focus on not one arena of combat, but actually three: Southeast Asia, Central Europe and Africa. The three zones of combat are centered around the 1970s and there are a number of distinct conflicts which occurred in that region at that time, most notably the Vietnam conflict. According to today's announcement, a major focus will in fact be on that conflict: "It’s also revealed that an important part of the main campaign will focus on events from the Vietnam war in late 60s, when US forces in South Vietnam numbered over half a million. Missions will see players engaging in solo action, commanding a squad, driving military vehicles, or taking to the air in authentic 'copters and planes. Weapons and military and civilian mobile units are being accurately modelled from period military data." As for Central Europe and Africa in 1970, the two most relevant historical conflicts of the time were the 1968 invasion of Czechslovakia and the Cambodia civil war of the 1970s. On the other hand, developer Bohemia Interactive may choose to instead create a fictional set of related conflicts as they did with the original Operation Flashpoint. The previous game was set in 1985 on a set of former Russian islands, now sovereign, which had fallen under attack of the Soviet army by a rebel Russian general. That "flashpoint" theme is likely to repeat itself, although its unclear how Operation Flashpoint's storyline will link the three areas together. Operation Flashpoint 2 (official web site) is scheduled for release in late 2004. The Wargamer will be on hand at the game's unveiling at this year's E3 exhibition next week.<span id='postcolor'> If you guys are at all interested to know, many very interesting conflicts were occurring in Africa in the '70s - the Rhodesian War, the battle over Namibia (South Africa vs. Angolans, Cubans and terrorists) various other colonial battles (Mozambique - see the Colonial War mod) as well as all over North Africa with coups and terrorism. I for one am super excited about this. Edit: Some more speculation here, but I know several hundred Vietnam vets became mercenaries after the way, with many serving in the Rhodesian War (though they did not consider themselves mercenaries).<span id='postcolor'> North Africa is part of Africa.  The Suez Canal is in North Africa...<span id='postcolor'> You could very well be right... but I always thought most people referred to that area as the Middle East, because I dare you to find an Egyptian who will call himself an African. North Africa is very, very different from sub-Saharan Africa.
