[Sound] Echoes system from Battlefield 3

Recommended Posts

Just played the beta and the battlefield sounds amazing.

Every single sound has a realistic echo, firefights and tank battles sound amazing, sound is different in open/enclosed areas. Also it seems very realistic, similar to a lot of the combat videos I have seen.

I have no idea how the echo system works in Battlefield 3, but I would love to hear something similar in ArmA 3.

EDIT:

I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT BI, RIP THE SYSTEM FROM BF3. MERELY ATTEMPT CREATE THEIR OWN THAT DEMONSTRATES SIMILAR SOUND EFFECTS

Example of Echo/Reverb by the excellent HARCP mod:

Point one: Echoes system from Battlefield 3 is a very, very bad idea for a subtitle. It will draw in fanbois who will flame you for even daring insinuate that Arma 3 be in any way (good or bad) like Battlefield 3

Point two: With that out of the way, a good sound system would definitely be welcome :yay:

BIS would have to spend an exorbitant amount of time and money adding this in. They can't just waltz up to DICE and say "hey we want your sound engine". Even IF they get it, not only will it cost an arm and a leg for licensing, but it'll cost the same amount in the time it takes implementing it, diverting resources from other things like making game-play/Ai better. Last we've heard is that they're still having trouble getting RTT implemented in ArmA3, and that's their own tech.

Simple no , not possible - maybe only updating current sound system with more classes and stuff

and it is not that simple as it sounds - you can easy say "OMG Dice best sounds ever - BIS buy sound engine from DICE naow!"

:p

No thanks.

Realistic sounds is way better than this Hollywood sound effects.

Hollywood did not invent echoing. It's a very realistic phenomenon.

If you are talking sounds in general, which is not the topic, to that I say BF3 sounds powerful and real weapons and artillery sound very fucking powerful. So at least Hollywood got the most important part right, the rest is details.

but, there's already an addon that make this on ArmA 2 ! but it only work for chernarus and utes, you can found it in the A2Warmod, then there's someone else working on that for all map, and it's named "F.A.P sound mod" by lordJarhead

so it wouldn't be a problem

PS : about the hollywood effect, he mean the sound are made obviously more loud than reality to accent the "so edgy & cool echos"

"omgz...make ArmA moar likes Battlefield !!!111!2"

I doubt real-life sounds like Battlefield, tbh. It probably sounds more like ACE sound mods.

If you don't know what real life sounds like, how can you judge Battlefield 3's sounds based on realism?

What TOP is saying is that some sound system sounds quite good, and the devs should check it out. It's no reason to bash about shit you admit you don't know about.

After I've played the Beta, I have a serious urge to make a REAL firearm noise in the EAHQ instead of the gaming. It's still the same as the BFBC2 and I don't sense any realism along with it. The echo is still glitchy and the sonic-crack is just a tiny pop and no echo as well. And they had overdone the noise from long-range rifle, which is extremely unlikely.

Try to define "awesome" and see how it works for everyone. ;)

Btw aren't EA/DICE using mostly scripted sound fx (thought I've seen a interview with the sound designer of BF3 somewhere)?

unlike Sony, who have a $100 million dollar budget for marketing alone, and an army of developers, BIS have to prioritize. I'm sure they haven't got time and money (or even a wish) to compete with BF's overexaggerated cinematic characterization of sound. it might sound "exciting" and impressive but it's not realistic.

Well it takes some time, money and sound engineering to find the sweet spot between "sounds real" and "fits with the game (+ sound engine)".

Don't think that everyone in military are going to let game devs record sounds of every weapon, vehicle, aircraft, explosion etc. for free & like game devs want and players wish/hope. Somehow I doubt that many players do/will like realistic ("boring") sounds in games.

For the alternative solution, either is to build up a sound synthesizing engine along with the game, or in advanced method by following the physics processing, not for the graphic, but for the exact sound output effect in different situations. I must admit there's no way to immerse the sound effect absolutely, maybe one day, the sound production is just as smart as an AI, will be able to simulate by its own scientifically without any firearm fee.

Actually, realistic sounds mean more uncomfortable and brutal sounds ^^

What BF is doing is they are taking the soul, the characteristics of a sound and make it sound enjoyable ( smooth bass etc) so you can still recognize what you are hearing but it is more like a "lite version"

Anyways, i would be the first one to support an enhanced audio system, which means that it should take more aspects in count like player position ( indoor, outdoor under water), distance, interior/exterior etc...

BIS has recognized the importance of sound as an artisticial element to create immersion and realism and now its up to them and the engine what they are capable of.

At the end, the samples itself are not the most important aspect ( very time consuming etc) because thats what soundmodders are for but the engine you can work with.

An excellent base will produce excellent results.

Sound from BC2 blew me away, I can play vanilla Arma no problem except for a sound mod, Arma vanilla sounds are just to flat and tinny.

Well i've never been in a tunnel gunfight but must say I prefer the artistic impressionism. RO2 you also get that indoor reverb and it's good to have a distinction between indoor/outdoor even if a little Hollywooded up.

Dont know anything about BF3 Echosystem, but as i said already .. Procedural Sounds would be the thing. Means: Basic Sound getting filtered and reverbed/delayed according to its enviroment. Thats the real deal.

Event->Sound->Procedure/enviroment->Output ..

Please make ArmA 3 absolutely nothing like Bf3. That joke of a game can rot for all I can, but we all know EA will milk it for all its got.

Ontopic, I would love to have really good sounds by stock instead of having to wait for a sound mod. I'm sure BIS will impress with ArmA 3. I've got my hopes up. :D
