Is this just a texture change, or do the summer versions fill out the foliage of the deciduous trees a little more? Most them are pretty skimpy because they've lost some leaves.

Is anyone working on a Winter Vegetation pack? Would love to see some of these islands covered in snow and ice. It's too bad BIS didn't include changing seasons into their awesome game. The scenery could change based on the date the mission was set for.

Great work, this really adds a lot to older maps that I thought I'd seen all of. And as a bonus, the performance killing red trees are gone! Thanks a lot Beton et al.

Once again Beton has put me to shame with the sheer amount of hard work he manages to cram into a day! And once again my contribution to this pack has been fairly meagre - birches, alder, rowan, reeds... a few bushes and plants... the limited subset of scottishy stuff I've been working on...

So major kudos and thanks to Beton for pulling the other 70-odd% of the pack together!

There are plans for an "islandmakers" version to follow... hopefully this'll be leaner, since it's not a full and direct replacement pack, we can skip the evergreens and include instead a few variants, like canina rosebushes with and without flowers, rowan trees with flowers or berries, a few clutter tonal variants, etc...

However, this version IS a full and direct replacement pack, by the way guys... which means that, just like a weapons or units replacement pack - while you have it loaded - ALL instances of standard BIS "autumn" vegetation will be replaced by summer -EVERYWHERE - regardless of island...

This means Summer Spritz, Summer Celle, Summer Thirsk, Summer Sbrodj - ANY terrain that uses the stock vegetation will be "summered" (though Betons cunning "summer landTex-style satellite layer replacement" applies to Chernarus only, obviously)...

Heres a few pics from Summer Chernarus...

summerC_02.jpg

summerC_03.jpg

... and one from Utes...

summerU_01.jpg

It IS a helluva big download, I guess - what you're getting for your precious bandwidth is basically a complete direct replacement BIS Arma 2 vegetation pack, plus a complete Summer replacement for the Chernarus Satellite Layer (just like the popular LandTex addon)...

Since these are Direct Replacements, there should be NO FPS hit whatsoever... You already load all of this stuff to run Chernarus anyway - the only difference we've introduced is that effectively you'll now load things twice... slightly increased loading time there then, but when it comes to in-game, Chernarus just looks in its usual place for vegetation, finds identical files - with different textures, and uses them as it normally would... no extra files in use, and no FPS cost...

You won't damage or overwrite any of your Arma 2 files on disc - overwriting only occurs in memory as the game loads...

As long as you have the Summer modfolder active, the game engine simply looks there for all its vegetation and textures, instead of the default files... in fact, it thinks they are the default files ;)

Disable the summer modfolder and restart the game - you're back to "normal"... that easy...

Finally - since servers really don't care what colour of tree you see in-game, as long as you see the right tree in the right place, this addon should run perfectly happily as a purely clientside mod in multiplayer... Once again, the indefatigable Beton has included all necessary sign files for clientside use, plus a keyfile for servers (which is the ONLY file required by servers to "allow" this mod)...

Excellent work, once I finish Taviana can I make a summer version of it using this pack?

EDIT: If you could also make a winter pack it would be awesome!

EDIT 2: Oh never mind I read the first post on the thread, I will definitely use this pack on Taviana!

Well...

i think without the tips and input from Bushlurker this project wouldn´t even have begun and i have to say if you look at the trees you will recognize the ones which hit their natural colour to the point...:)

I´m not really as patient as he is...

@ Martin:

If you are using standard BIS autumn vegetation Taviana will will be "summered" if you use this Summerpack. But your satmap will not since this is part of your island. If you want a standalone summerversion of your map you will have to use the addonversion of the Summervegetation which will be available very soon. It is silightly different as Bushlurker described before and will have no influence on any other island.

@ Max255[PL]:

Looking out of the window i have to say ... maybe snow may fall in the next few weeks...:)

Ah ok, I understand. No rush I didn't even finish the autumn version yet.

Hehe, I hope it will fall soon in ArmA 2 as well :wink_o:

Hi Bushlurker/Beton

Does this mod get loaded before or after loading a map into the editor? Depending on your answer, it might mean that it's possible to have it kick in (or not) depending on the time of year specified in the editor.

Just a thought...

Hm... as far as i know addons like this get loaded when you start the game. But i don´t know much about that stuff.

So if any master of config, scripting etc here on the forum has an idea how to implement vegetationchange depending on time of year that would be interesting.

Hi tpw....

I'm afraid it doesn't really work that way...

Basically, when you start the game.exe the first thing it does is load itself like a modfolder - thats the "CA" you see popping up in errors sometimes (it's just Arma2's name for itself) - after that it loads whatever other modfolders you want - in the order you have them... this means that one mod can overwrite another mods settings if they both edit the same thing and one loads after another... thats why mods sometimes conflict...

This replacement mod basically takes advantage of that...

First the game loads its regular vegetation files, then - when it hits this modfolders it recognises them as the same vegetation files all over again - so it replaces the first ones it loaded (autumn) with the new (summer) - so they're not loaded side-by-side, and all loading is over by the time you hit the main menu...

I'm not sure if "hot swapping" vegetation on an island-wide basis is actually possible...

Thanks guys, greatly appreciate the double barrelled answer :)

By the way, I'd downloaded the 0.5 version by mistake yesterday and thought that was good, but the 1.0 is outstanding!

One Question:

I always have a performance impact when there are too many of those damn orange trees on chernarus, will your addon give me better performance? Or is the polycount still the same?

Hmmm "swapping" the trees doesn't require changing the models them selves because you are using the original models I presume, so what would only have to be done is to change the textures on the models using hidden selections, this is possible to do with an add-on in editor but I'm not sure if it would be possible to do with objects on the actual island .wrp.

The other method is, you don't actually see summer change in to autumn in 24 hours, unless you want to make time go fast in a cut scene or what ever so you can just start the cut scene on the original Chernarus, black the screen out, load part 2 of the cut scene on summer Chernarus and then just black the screen out again and continue with your cut scene.
