Request removal of distance mountains on skydome

Recommended Posts

I would rather see the horizon blank, it just looks silly seeing the mountains around the edge of the horizon like theres another island that you could go to.

Anyways please remove them BIS, they look blah.

Anybody else agree?

*I was just reminded about them when I looked at the OA screenshots. :) *

Yeah I saw that earlier today but read there was problems with stuttering and I already get enough of that

Anyways I would love if BIS kept them out of the game since it looks bad and theres no need for it, since theres usually large mass of water near islands... ;)

The simplest of requests I can come up with. :p

Way to use the search function, chief.

I like the fake horizon as well. ArmA gave me claustrophobia when flying etc. All white like a wall everywhere. Even though they are fake they give me some sense of air and space.

Indeed. The skybox (fake mountains) is awesome and that even for islands like utes. It's just so much nicer, than to simply "fog out", especially if you're forced to play with lower view distances.

And what about custom islands? Supposed to be real islands? Ok, they're rare. :)

IIRC the fake mountains fit for Cherneraus, they are in the north and west only.

I think they're ok, I dont spend a lot of time scrutinising them so they just add a nice backdrop. If they werent there I dont think it would look as good, especially in chernarus where they give the impression of rolling countryside & wide open spaces!

They are a good fit for Chernarus, but I assume they were put in there because Utes is supposed to be somewhat close to the chernarussian shore...

It does it's thing, but I suppose that for addon islands this will impose a geographical situation that might not be what the author intended.

Cheers

For laughs I moved (via addon) Utes to E53°50' N68°22' (a place is russia called Ostrov Lovetskiy), just to check if I got midnight sun, and I did - amazing :D Those texture based horizon mountains blocked the sun. So I had to use DMarkwick's addon to remove it. Now I can watch my sunset at midnight, where the sun never goes below the horizon, and it never goes night. Simply awesome :D

I moved Chernarus to the Falkland Islands (also just for the fun of it). But now I can't find my way around the night sky, as I'm not familiar with the southern hemisphere stars and constallations. Where can I find the stars texture? I need to colorize it a bit to help me learn that stuff.

LOL :D I remember being *actually* in the Falklands and thinking exactly the same thing :)

Also, a bit freaked that the sun went the "other" way round, and that the moon was upside down.

However :)

I don't know that there is a star texture, as I believe the stars themselves are GPU-spawned objects.

There is an addon that can help with that Carl. It lets you navigate using the stars in-game.

OT: Personally I love the distant mountains. Like somebody else said they give me a sense of space. Much better (Imho) than that blank nothingness in ArmA 1.

I got 50/50 on Swedges_Arma_2_Star_Navigation, but it only had how to find the north star. And it was flash based, not something ingame. Using stars to find the south direction is a bit more complicated from what I've seen.

I couldn't find anything else obvious on Armaholic. Can you point the way like a good pointer star? :D

Using this page

as reference, you can use Orion if you can see it for basic northerly and southerly direction, not precise, but perhaps good enough for a rough direction:

As you can see, the belt of Orion will clue you in to east & west directions, while the very slight misalignment of the middle star in the belt will point to rough north.

Other than that, finding a definite south direction is more difficult because there is no south star. You need to look at other stars & constellations near to the south to infer it. I think the southern cross is the most reliable constellation:
