myshaak 0 Posted August 18, 2009 Hi all! Since the majority of you are sim fans, you might be interested in the following news: Ubisoft has announced a fifth sequel to their submarine sim, Silent Hunter! YAY! No more boring missions with the Allied subs in the Pacific, it's the Germans again with their sexy VIIC U-Boats cruising the Atlantic! The announcement comes with a few pics and a cool trailer (with English voices, which imho suxxx, but anyway...) Hopefully, it will be better than SH4, I try to pretend that this Silent Hunter child has never been born (for those, who are new to the series: SH4 compared to SH3 was like ArmA1 compared to the original OFP.. prettier, but far less immersive and gameplay-wise attractive..) More info on the official site: http://silent-hunter.uk.ubi.com/silent-hunter-5/ Feel free to share your comments and thoughts:)
MehMan 0 Posted August 18, 2009 The trailer started sucking at the start but by the end it just turned into a massive black hole. I liked SH3. What I didn't like was the lone wolf shit. I guess it was too hard to program friendly AI. I just wanted to do a wolf pack attack on a huge convoy. But NOOOOOOO what you had was yourself and that was it. Still was loads of fun. When you were actually doing something. even though 64x acceleration should be enough, it just isn't when you have to sail half the atlantic.
myshaak 0 Posted August 18, 2009 Have you tried the Grey Wolves expansion? Total SH3 Overhaul, recommended! (64x acc? Mine can go as high as 1024x acc, are you sure your game was well patched?)
Colossus 2 Posted August 18, 2009 Besides having me totally confused whether or not that was a US or German sub at the begining (there better be a voice option in this), I'd say I'm looking forward to seeing this game in action. I loved SH3 and it is the same developer, so there should be hope for this one. Unless they crash dive as they did for SH4..
colligpip 0 Posted August 18, 2009 Oh i was hoping they might update it and go for cold war subs O well back to dangerous waters.

Still, sailing the open seas gets BORING after a while. Really. And I'd need a warp button. I'm no stranger to patience ingame, but too much is just too much. And there's a bunch of things, like the crew, that sector is just underdeveloped. Still, will give grey wolves a go. Edited August 18, 2009 by MehMan

TangoRomeo 10 Posted August 18, 2009 Wasn't much into the pacific. I did some mods for SH3/4; Bordinstrumente (SH3), Submarine Instruments (SH4), and some reskins for the U-Boat missions addon. Looking forward to this, i feel much more at home in the atlantic on a Type VII, with all odds being against the player.
Prydain 1 Posted August 19, 2009 That was one of the worst trailers ever.
kavoven 4 Posted August 19, 2009 I think it was supposed to look like "Das Boot" and they... failed.
sudayev 27 Posted August 22, 2009 Wow I didn't know anything about SH V! How cool that submarine warfare comes back to the Atlantic. SH IV kinda disappointed me in several ways, so I skipped it. Actually taking some missions at the Black Sea against russian navy. Only in tremendous Grey Wolves Mod 3.0 for SH III. I hope that Ubisoft will learn their homework based on the previous installments of SH. I mean no annoying bugs and good optimalisation.
Taconic 0 Posted August 22, 2009 I never bothered with SH IV because the Pacific is a pretty boring theatre for sub combat. They really should stick to the Atlantic permanently.
W0lle 1052 Posted August 22, 2009 Seems like I'm one of the few who enjoyed the pacific then... Anyway looking forward to patrol the atlantic again.
GoOB 0 Posted August 23, 2009 A very lame and insipid trailer - Nothing in it of substance except somewhat cheesy voice acting and fancy crew animations. That said, looking forward to seeing what is whipped up for the fifth iteration of this series - Hope it's no Wolves of the Pacific, which wasn't a bad game, just a (to me) less interesting theatre. Anyway looking forward to patrol the atlantic again.Na, SH4 was nice enough - but the German pacific missions sucked ass. Having played the original Silent Service ages ago on a 800XL the pacific theater will always be full of fond memories... :inlove:
Col. Faulkner 0 Posted August 26, 2009 I liked S.H.III, as far as it went, but I always hoped they'd offer the option to play as the convoy escorts. This new iteration just looks like more of the same.
Balschoiw 0 Posted August 27, 2009 I´m only partly holding my breath as I think that the series somewhat degraded with the last parts. While the gfx were all nice and dramatic, the gameplay itself never really got a needed overhaul. The damage model was too simple at points and there was not much variety on enemy ships. The all had the same paintjob, no matter what. For me this felt very repetative after a while. Spot two C3´s line up to them at a 90° angle, wait till they are passing, do the torpedo maths, adjust torpedo depth according to book and weather and fire. Repetative. The "save survivors" didn´t work for me, so the deck gun also had something to do after sinking a ship. Of course this all looked nice graphically but I lost the fun on the way there. Mission design in the pacific theater was a joke at best and several bugs, like trying to sink a big ship in shallow water that simply doesn´t sink just because the water is too low, magically blowing up the own ship while crashdiving, crashing destroyers who had their path plotted quite badly and sunk themselves right over me and things like that do not really make me smile. Either they do a real overhaul with SH5, or I´m skipping it.
4 IN 1 0 Posted August 27, 2009 I dont know if you guys played the very first Silent Hunter on dos, it too is in pacific as US but IMO it feels more solid then SH4
TangoRomeo 10 Posted August 28, 2009 The orig. Silent Hunter was just a cheap AOTD ripoff. :D Glc_qGTTMXk For it's time, the 3D graphics and sound were revolutionary. Some people still think this was the best WW2 U-Boat game created up until SH3.
4 IN 1 0 Posted September 5, 2009 Seems like I'm one of the few who enjoyed the pacific then... Anyway looking forward to patrol the atlantic again. well I am into the pacific but in SH1(and not that into U-boat for no good reason, dunno why), I didnt brought SH4 because i heard they have a lots of bugs from the begining, now i have the game but i find it somewhat "missing"(on the combat side all SH are the same TBH) is there anywhere i could find some decent mod?
