graphics bugs with ATI 4800 series (4850/4870/4890)

Hi guys,

I have the same problem under WinXP. I have since installed the game on Vista64 and found that the problem does not occur with the latest drivers on that operating system. I use a dual-boot system, so this does seem to narrow it down to the WinXP drivers.

Incidentally, the game runs very nicely under Vista64 with no really noticable difference to WinXP. That's not much help if you currently have WinXP I know, but it might persuade you to upgrade to Windows7 when it comes out (its based on Vista).

It's 64bit that is making everything work, or 32bit that breaks everything. (I don't really know which.). Either way, ArmA does not like 32bit operating systems with Ati drivers. I have 64bit XP and it runs fine with my 4870 with 512, (Apparently, a big no no.) but it works flawlessly.

So, I implore you people to get 64bit Operating systems and end this madness. :p

(I suggest 64bit XP, it's great. :yay:)

Use -winxp on the end of your commandline.

umm No? i dont know what your smoking but it seems to run pretty well on 32 bit XP. I have a 4850 and 0 problems what so ever.

It tends not to be the OS but the amount of RAM on your card. Using Win7 seems to rectify this by perhaps having better memory handling of the 512Mb that you do have onboard.

Having played with Win7 I'm not going back to Vista64 or XP32. I was so impressed that I have pre-ordered Win7.

Seems this will never be fixed by ATI for the XP as my card runs very well on 7.

Weirdest thing was i installed my game with latest patches ona friends PC to test it on his 8800GS ( he also uses XP ) and i nearly went insane when it ran super fluid and with nearly no texture loading on mid to high settings there.

No idea why in the world my HD4870 performs so much worse under XP that even a old 8800GS seems better for the game. :(

So what would you recommend? I already downloaded win 7 prof 32bit and 64bit via msdnaa of my university. Should i install 64 because there are no driver issues anymore?

But i feel sorry that none official answered if this is ati related or just a bug of the engine :(

i'm an ATI owner and i came to realize that my decision of buying a crossfire motherboard was a big mistake, ATI sucks, i'm currently bidding on GTX 285 and hopefully save some money and go for SLI motherboard.

ATI 4890 1GB on WinXP 32 with 9.9 drivers here.

I was messing with my settings today, trying to figure out what's causing my issues with lod switching in 1.04, when I reencountered a bug from the demo. When I put Video memory on Default, I have missing textures (entire buildings, people having only heads textured etc), same issue I had in demo, where I also had artefacts every now and then. Putting Video memory on Very high fixes it. As for the lod switching, seems a combination of defrag, video settings tweaking and -maxmem=2047 command line param solved it to an extent.

My Specs:

Ati Radeon 4890 1 GB with Catalyst 9.9 Win 7

Amd Phenom X4 945 3.00 GHZ

8 GB RAM

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 (It's the same thing of Windows 7)

No problem with ArmA 1 1.16.

Is there a way to solve this problem?

Boot with less RAM, or pull out a stick or two. Its a 8GB issue right now..

I gotta keep posting this stuff or it will get swept under the carpet, but I am still having major issues with the my 4870X2 card ( 9.9 driver and 1.04) and the white screen and pixelations, that occurs every time you look at any bright object. The sun glare bug. I would love for some official feed back from BIS that they are on to it, coz it really is starting to irritate me

Put catalyst a.i.to high. When I use off or low I get the same problem you do.

I use two of your cards, No pixelations here...? But yeah you look at the sun its going to be bright white... And bright objects can give insane glare too.That being said it is too much, I use HDR = 32(you have 8,and 16 also) in my arma2.cfg, set my brightness to .9 and my Gama to .9~, Also Post Processing on is a sure cure. Then you can use Crysis.exe as a rename, but have to use the -winxp flag to keep your CF.

Hell yeah i already posted a lot of photos on the thread, but now I want to submit my great experience around chernogorsk :D Yet I know the FLUSH command helps as much as AL+TAB to windows and back. But this is only for some minutes.

There are no temperature problems (proved with fans on 100%) and there is no overclocking. Sometimes there are those polygons related to buildings (maybe bad LOD or something) so only the outside view of the chopper is affected. But there are also polygons all over the screens. Don't forget to mention houses disappearing and parts of the landscape disappear.

System XP Prof 32 (was installed new for ArmA 2)

Phenom II X4 945

ATI HD 4850 with 512MB Cat 9.8

4 GB DDR2 800Mhz

and WD 640AACS

I own a legal copy of ArmA 2 so what...

:D meanwhile I could laugh about it a bit, but this is disturbing the gameplay at the south of chernarus...

Edit: mep...patch 1.04 and no nodvd crack. I play with original DVD! So I don't think it is related to fade or so

I tried default, low and normal i give it a try with high :D But my 4850 only has 512mb...

Edit2: Only lowering the videomemory to low and texture detail to very low seems to help to get rid of this bug, but then arma 2 looks with its flat trees and blurry houses even worse than ArmA and Operation Flashpoint
