Your favourite warfare era!

Recommended Posts

I voted WW2...I think that's what the engine is the most suitable for.

Except that the Arma men cannot hold straight stocked rifles

properly and have no idea what a manual bolt action is. But I

agree that that level of military technology suits the engine

better.

I voted modern. But I don't just want Iraq. I don't care if some armies are not at war IRL. Fictional wars can be fun too smile_o.gif

QFE, I'd rather have a modern timeline with a temperate or arctic setting.

I voted WW1, because i think its just as iconic as WW2 or Nam, and just to be different.

I find that era fascinating, the equipment, the style of warfare etc. Kinda surreal when you compare it to todays modern conflicts.

IMO it is largly overlooked and forgotten in todays games.

It would be quite a challenge to make the trench warfare aspect work, but it would be worthwhile if done well smile_o.gif

That's because it'd be boring. Wait for the arty to stop, get in line, charge, die.

Exactly. That was the reality, but as for a game, I think you would get bored pretty quick.

Though, I think if the correct atmosphere was captured without making it a "war-is-glorious"-game, it would be mentally a cool game.

Not something that would hold for multiplayer, or even a few hours of singleplayer, though.

But if you get bored with a game showing it, what do you think the soldiers felt after 4 years of doing the same thing?

That's the feeling you could capture, but it would not make for a game.

I would say medieval, but I still miss any game that actually simulates it well.

I want to be one of the men storming towards the enemy with my sword/spear/whatever and not just have alot of combos that I can do and with ease kill the enemy.

So for a mod or alike - go with Modern Day, but don't be afraid to leave desert/mid-east, any non-IRL wars would be cool to play, as mentioned before in this thread, ie Russia/China vs US/UK/Europe etc etc

Iraq and the whole insurgency stuff starts to bore me, it will never be a good setting for a game.

Kuwait/desert storm would be 10 times more interesting, atleast back then Iraq still had military power smile_o.gif .

I've voted Medieval.

I like the romantic idea of knights, fighting for honor, king and country, protecting the weak and such.

And ever since I've played Medieval 2 Total War, I'm completely thrilled when I see two huge armys marching towards each other and horses going for the flanks, while trebuchets are flinging fireballs and dead cows at the enemy.

Me too goes with medieval.

Its a heroic time, and with people, who stood man against man

So that's fantasy-medieval then.  wink_o.gif  Reality was a whole lot

messier and nastier.

Ancient warfare is a particular interest of mine also (I have a

row of Bronze Age swords on my wall - the bronze nicely

matches my Corinthian hoplite's helmet - and I even used to

reenact a Roman legionary in a sillier phase of my life), but I

don't think the ArmA engine would be my first choice for a

platform to try and implement ancient and medieval warfare

on!  I'd be interested to hear about any project that's

seriously attempting it, though (I'd love to be able to

realistically manoeuvre my legions on the field - "Rome Total

War" is nowhere near realistic enough for me)

Futuristic got my vote.

Anything from Tom Clancy's EndWar to WH40K would be fun as hell.

Being inserted by dropship with your fellow awesome, hightech looking buddies into a completely massive firefight between two warring factions.

But I can only imagine. confused_o.gif

(I still dream for a futuristic CoD)

Well if you can get a "ping" sound to play as the last round

in the en-bloc clip is fired then jolly good for you. Can you

make the clip eject also? If you can do that then I might

even use your rifle for a Provo IRA mission - otherwise I'll

have to finish my Armaloite roifle after all, so I will.

I have discussed the last round "ping" with a scripter and it seems possible to do.

If all goes well should be included in first release.

As for the ejecting clip,It would be something that would be nice to include but maybe not imperative to have implemented.

anyways WW2 all the way for me.

Voted "Modern", but it's with a slight reservation. Shooting Milans at entrenched arabs insisting on firing from the hip is all well and good, but I think the period around the Falklands war was immensely interesting from an infantry point of view (which is what Arma is essentially all about).

Not a lot in the way of nightvision, GPS, laserguided bombs or any of that stuff, and especially with regards to that war in particular, not a hell of a lot of support alltogether, save for some exemplary mortar coverage, kinda WW2 stuff. Back to basics, man to man infantry combat, where the best battlefield tacticians with the best training won the day, and with a lot more than just superior kit to attribute it to.

Needless to say I'm dying to see some addons from that period. Too bad the OFP Falklands guys were so late with their mod. Conversion to Arma, anyone? wink_o.gif

Last time I tried Vilas' one the "Ping" played only when you hit

the "Reload" key (and the rifle itself looked like it was made

out of "Lego") so I put it aside. I'm only interested in the M1

because it was a favourite of the Provo IRA in the '70s (firing

surplussed .30-06 AP ammo - nasty) and because it was used

by some British commandos.
