-=seany=- 5 Posted March 16, 2007 One thing I find irritating is when I press "M" to view the map whilst I'm running across terrain or driving and it stops me, I have to close the map and start moving again by repressing the "forward" key. I like to switch to my map a lot when moving across long distances on foot or driving. In OFP it wasn't like this, you could keep moving for however long you liked with the map open. I like it that way. Did BIS set it up to stop you moving on purpose in ArmA or was it just an accident in design? should I report it as a bug? Does it bother you guys, or do you not mind? weegee_101 0 Posted March 16, 2007 Have you ever tried running while looking at a map? Doesn't usually work too well... and driving while looking at a map is just plain stupid. Personally I really don't mind the lack of movement while looking at the map. Its not a game killer to me and as I stated above, its a little difficult to move while looking at a map. dmarkwick 261 Posted March 16, 2007 Well I move when looking at the map. I'm not saying I should, but I am saying that I can. I quite liked Vietnam's method where your character had to actually get a map out and look at it.
Beagle 684 Posted March 16, 2007 ähm...! I'm german. Can someone please explain me the expression: Nitpicking Thanks in advance.
fasad 1 Posted March 16, 2007 nit = a head louse. nitpicking = looking through someones hair to find and remove individual nits by hand. Metaphor = looking in a large system to find small/trivial problems. On topic, I can move while looking at the map.
Beagle 684 Posted March 16, 2007 Thank you fasad...!
benreeper 0 Posted March 16, 2007 I can run/move on the map screen. You can't if you're playing in a window. --Ben
-=seany=- 5 Posted March 16, 2007 ha ha Beagle . Look I'm not nitpicking, alright. If I was, I would have posted this in the Trouble Shooting section. This forum is for general discussion, which is what this is. I'm not saying it ruins my game either.. i was just curious to see what others thought. And it looks as though most ppl can keep moving when they press the map key, so I must be missing some thing, which is good
smellyjelly 0 Posted March 16, 2007 I'd prefer it if we could still control or vehicles. Perhaps it would also be helpful if the map was a tiny bit transparent too?
Journeyman 0 Posted March 16, 2007 This is supposed to be a simulator so I would welcome anything that makes it ‘more’’ not’ less’ realistic whether or not it might be deemed 'inconvenient'. I'm sure that I can still move whilst looking at a map in ArmA though and I can look at a map and walk IRL (I was a mountaineer for years) BUT I could not study a map and walk. Maybe BIS could implement that new ironsight movement into the map view so that when you try and walk/run with the map up it bobs about all over the place and is only still when you stop! Now that would be more realistic and I wonder how many of you would then decide to stop next time you looked at the map!
max power 21 Posted March 16, 2007 This feature is to facilitate smooth gameplay. Not everyone studies the map with militaristic precision before stepping out on a mission :/ Soldiers also don't have a common map where everyone can look at it at once no matter how far appart and write huge X's on it with "heheheh boobies" written beside it like we see on the public servers. I like the map the way it is (in spite of the teenaged hooligan grafitti).
celery 8 Posted March 16, 2007 I'd rather have the ability to control myself whilst reading a map. I understand that some people have difficulties controlling a vehicle while blind, but isn't that their shame? In OFP it was no problem for me to glance at the map quickly while driving or making a curve in the air at 10 meters of altitude. Like the old walking and shooting question, a restriction due to inconvenience in most situations is a stupid excuse.
Chris Death 0 Posted March 16, 2007 If i remember right, my Harrier kept moving when looking at the map screen 2 months ago. Could be a bug true. ~S~ CD
Dallas 9 Posted March 16, 2007 Seriously get a co-driver, study the map beforehand, pull over or play as SF with a portable gps.
the unknown 0 Posted March 16, 2007 You can still move and watch the map if it stops afther you started up the map try pressing the move key again.
-=seany=- 5 Posted March 16, 2007 Ok, had a bit more of a play around with it today and it turns out it is indeed a bug. If you use WSAD as your movement keys it functions exactly like OFP, switching to map has no affect on player/vehicle movement. If, however, you use the Arrow Keys for movement (as I do....yes yes I know) then switching to map interrupts player/vehicle movement. I also do not have control when the maps has opened. The map has to be closed and the Up Arrow repressed to continue moving. If anyone else could confirm this, that would be great. Cheers guys
-=seany=- 5 Posted March 19, 2007 I reported the above as a bug, but now its gone. Do the devs delete bug reports they think are not bugs or too trivial? Wouldn't they just have "closed" the report? -------------------------------------- NM my bad ..its there, sorry. To make up for time wasted reading my thread, look a this funny bug report: http://bugs.armed-assault.net/view.php?id=2155
kernriver 4 Posted March 20, 2007 I've noticed that if i run and look at the map, i stop running. But if i sprint and press M, i keep moving. It's the same with vehicles. Btw, i don't use WASD or Arrow Keys.
frederf 0 Posted March 20, 2007 I've noticed the turn left/turn right keys work in map mode. This, combined with the blown up compass makes measuring distance (the compass body has a scale on the side) and heading while in the map screen is very useful. SeppSchrot 0 Posted March 21, 2007 I think the stopping is a nice feature, because it supports teamwork. Yesterday I drove a BRDM and my gunner had to tell me way. Was a quite authentic situation sice we got lost two times deep in Saharani. "WTF, but you said 'turn right at the crossroad...' " Please leave the stopping how it is. Dark_vityaz 0 Posted March 21, 2007 Soldiers also don't have a common map where everyone can look at it at once. Yeah,it would be more realistic to turn off the map in general just for soldiers.Does anybody know how to make it?
SeppSchrot 0 Posted March 21, 2007 Yeah,it would be more realistic to turn off the map in general just for soldiers.Does anybody know how to make it? You can set the 'showMap' variable to false in order to prevent players to show it. You have to reenable it when the player boards a vehicle.
Espectro (DayZ) 0 Posted March 21, 2007 In military service each buddy-ship (two soldiers) all had a map.
dentist guba 0 Posted March 21, 2007 what about 1 person vehicles(e.g. the harrier). maybe pilots should be able to set their own waypoints.
