1.05 Causes performance Hits.

Recommended Posts

I bought arma 2 days ago.

1.04 ran fine and after patching it still runs fine.

Dual core 6600 with 2Gb of internal memory in combination with a 7950GTX with 1 Gb of internal memory.

Hi all.

I am posting this for a friend who is not registered on the forums.

In 1.04 he could run ArmA (505 version) with an average of 30 - 50 FPS, all settings maxed, viewdistance ca. 7000 M and resolution on 1152 x 864.

Now after 1.05 his preformance has severly decreased to ca. an average of 20 FPS with settings on medium, resolution 1152 x 864 and viewdistance 2000 M.

His PC specs are:

ADM athlon 3700+ 64 bit 939 single core

MSI deluxe SLI

2 GB ram

2x Nvidia 6800 ultra. PCI-e x16 SLI

PS: Also he noticed that Post processing on high reduced preformance alot more in 1.05.

I am astounded at how much this patch has affected my performance.

The way it was running on 1.04 was borderline playable anyway

1280x960 all settings on normal-PP enabled. It was running between 18-30fps unless i was near foileage and was acceptable for me ( i never expected more than that)

P4 3.0ghz 7600gt 256 1gb ram

Now on 1.05 i cant play the game without it looking god awfull (its odd that resolution doesnt seem to affect frame rate).

i defragged using o&o (access method) straight after updating thinking that this may be why people were seeing problems but it made no difference.

Its pretty sad to see this game fail, i expected the patch to improve performance by sorting the shading problem with foileage.

The patch really shouldnt have been released in its current state....kind of suicidal if you ask me.

Ah well, at least i have invasion 44 smile_o.gif

i'll tell you someting funny

i live in eastern europe, people here are poor and electronics costs more than in western europe

so people buy lower, cheaper PC than you

and after patch many of them tell that they have better

me - i bought better PC (dual core 3800+, Corsair DDR2 675, 7900 GS) and i have lower performance, but people who have for example 7600 GT and 512 DDR 333 are now feeling better :?

Same here, v1.04 had acceptable frame rate, v1.05 caused a sudden FPS drop. Playing on a 7800GTX.

Any of you tried to defrag your harddrive after installing the game, the game uses the harddrive alot and if you install the patch the install will grow and if you installed files to the drive after armed assault then the new parts of files will end up after the newer files, and that will lead to swapping between sectors on the harddrive.

Its just an idea, Im not at home so I haven't tried out the patch yet!

This is a good idea. As you say, Arma uses harddrive to load. Think i´ve gotten a little better performance since defragging.

Ive seemed to have lost a few frames after update from 1.02 and also seem to have texture problems, ive been playing around with the settings for an hour now.

Not happy with it sad_o.gif

NVIDIA driver issue?

Its not a driver issue.

Ive played 1.0 1.01 1.02 1.04 and 1.05 all with the same nvidia drivers (93.71)

I had a signficant increase in performance from 1.0-1.02, 1.02-1.04 was around the same.

This has now been undone and performance wise 1.05 is closer to 1.0

I trust BIS will sort it but its pretty annoying, this patch means i can no longer play armed assault (without reinstalling) seeing people with dual 8800's having the same problem is re-assuring as it means the problem must be down to code rather than hardware/drivers.

Ill play OFP till they fix it

Ok, I went from 1.02 to 1.05.

I had settings tested and optimized within 1.02 and the game ran fluent and nice and I did not have the texture bug at all.

I was pretty happy and whoopie.

Today I replayed some of the SP missions just to see the changes in AI, handling and performance and to my surprise the performance went down, not up.

I still have the same NVidia drivers and haven´t changed any of the Arma settings.

System:

2800 XP

1 GB DDR Ram

MSI KT2 Ultra - Raid

Leadtek GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB

and about 20 Gig´s of free HD space

OS:

WindowsXP Professional SP2

System defragged and clean

It´s a bit sad. sad_o.gif

I don´t have FPS rates to compare but it´s a "felt" 25 percent loss and even more near bushes or within woods.

I was using a copy (illegal Ill admit) of 1.04 and after buying 1.05 I definatly see a performance hit.

in 1.04 I was running at 1024x768 with all but Terrain set on very high and viewdistance set at 3200.. dont know my exact FPS but it was fluid when in large citys.. flying over them in a chopper etc etc..

with 1.05 with the same settings the game gets a little jerky if I fly over a big city very fast... open spaces, woods.. etc are still just fine.

one thing that suprised me is that the first thing I did when it got jerky was lower my view distance from 3200 to 2000 which made NO difference.. which I find interesting in that.. I would think that means that the performance hit has nothing to do with polygon count.. but probably with textures or shadows... lowering the distance cuts out a lot of shapes but not alot of textures.

I had to turn objects down to High and shadows to normal to get comparable smoothness to what I had with 1.04

specs:

Athlon 64 4000+

2GB OCZ PC5000

1 320GB SATA drive

1 120GB SATA drive (where partition is)

Geforce 7900GT-O

sundry other goodies.

Well, Ive had the *good* fortune of experiencing the various problems encountered by dual core medium/high end users like myself from a distance watching posts come up on the forums here with this new patch, and have not installed it yet -

All I can say, is if this issue is never resolved for us dual core/modernized computer users, dont expect my current mission project to be compatable to anything beyond 1.02, because I simply wont go there.

Good greif, I appreciate all Bis is done, but after spending the last half an hour reading all these posts, and posts from other threads regarding considerable performance losses (a good many being Dual Core users) no way im touching a patch until this stuff goes away wow_o.gif

I wish I had that choice, I loved 1.02 apart from the dumb AI and occasional sound bugs. But seeing as the community was split between 1.02 and 1.04, online users, especially those of us in clans that have switched to 1.05 have no choice.

Like rudedog said, a beta patch would have discovered the issues before forcing the community to download a bugged 200 to 400Mb patch.

I dont think the performance problem is limited to high end users.

Im low end (p4 3.06ghz 7600gt 256 1gb) and have suffered the same % drop in fps.

For me its game breaking, all i can do is hope for a patch to fix it and stick to ofp till it comes.

(ofp + ffur2007/slx beats ArmA atm anyway smile_o.gif)

I've been suffering the same performance hit.

Specs:

C2D E6300 1.83GHz

XFX 7600GT Clocked at 578/1.4GHz (According to Rivatuner)

1GB of RAM

Windows Vista Business (For work, I have no option as my gaming rig is the only machine I can support Vista with)

For now I think I'm uninstalling and reinstalling 1.04.

Edit: Fixed Clock Values... was reading the wrong value in Rivatuner. Thought something might be wrong. tounge2.gif

hyper type R psu

western digital 75gig 8mb cach hard drive.

Okay, reinstalled 1.04 now, and its much better. The annoying iron sights are back, though. Is there any way to get the new iron sight into 1.04?

ASUS A8N-E socket 939

AMD 64 X2 4800+ (2 x 1MB L2 Cache)

XFX 8800 gtx xxx OC'L version

3GB DDR 400 (corsair and patriot)

SATA WD hard drive

X-Fi sound

Antec NEO HE 550Watt PS

-Lost huge amounts of performance. I was running the demo with 35-60 FPS in multiplayer with the highest settings (not including view distance, little over 3000). Now I barely get around 20 on 1100 some x whatever resolution and everything only on High (AA on low) with view distance at 1000. There is something really amiss here with the graphics. My drivers are the newest ones released for both my graphics card and motherboard. The memory choke bug stated before may seem to be the problem. Even when I turn things way down it doesn't really make that much of a difference. Foliage still boggs my computer down like a sand trap. Thank god the mission my Unit is making right now doesn't have many trees or bushes or I'd be partaking in Operation Flipbook.

Bottom line, GREAT GAME... bad patch for NVidia and 8800 users. My roommate has a 7950 GX2 and he has a huge performance decrease too. His setup is almost the same except he has an SLI motherboard by ASUS. He has the same SATA type HD, same processor, same type of RAM but only 2GB, and same soundcard. He has all newer drivers and BIOS as well.

We are both at a loss for what's going on and can only assume it has to do with NVidia brand cards (according to what we have and from what others have said above). This really needs a fix quickly. I waited forever to get this game and spent a lot of time and money to get everything right to play this game well. Very depressing after my 4 - 5 hour download and the $1000+ I spent to upgrade my machine specifically for this game. confused_o.gif

I'm reading a lot of stuff here that could be construed as subjective. Any chance of you guys using ArmaMark and get some figures down on paper. That will prove it one way or the other.

Because you know... I just waited for 2 days to get permission to post specifically on this forum to just make crap up.  Most might think that that were a waste of time.  Just because you're skeptical doesn't mean you have to assume we're all smoking crack and be cynical about it.  Getting exact specifics would be nice; chances of it ever happening... slim-to-none.  What has been posted is evidence enough that something is wrong.
