Quote[/b] ]Trafalgar without the French

(Filed: 23/05/2005)

Plans to mark Nelson's victory at Trafalgar with a re-enactment which does not mention the French were attacked by an MP yesterday.

A "Napoleonic sea battle" will be staged off Southsea as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of Britain's defeat of the Franco-Spanish fleet in 1805. But the spectacular son et lumiere show will feature just a "Red Fleet" and a "Blue Fleet".

Mike Hancock, the Lib Dem MP for Portsmouth South, said the decision to protect the feelings of French guests, by not making it explicit which nations fought the battle in which Admiral Lord Nelson was killed, was "absolute twaddle".

He added: "If we are going to re-enact it we should do it properly. I am sure the French do not pull any punches when they celebrate Napoleon's victories."

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "This is a piece of theatre and not supposed to be historically accurate."

The re-enactment will be on June 28 following an international fleet review attended by the Queen.

What an insult to the French, British, and Spainsh sailors... tounge_o.gifghostface.gif

Quote[/b] ]The Charlotte company has landed a multi-million-dollar contract to help build 120 armored trucks headed for battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some will see action this fall.

The massive trucks - called Cougar Joint Explosive Ordnance Disposal Rapid Response Vehicles - can withstand a blast from a mine or other small explosive device. They come in two sizes, the bigger one weighs 19 tons and fits 10 people, and can travel up to 70 mph on asphalt. The smaller one is 15 tons and seats four.

I just thought it was funny that the name was so long, rather than even copy and paste it or give proper names, they're just "the bigger one" and "the smaller one" lol.

The F-4 Phantom One comes from the "Phantom II" designation of the F-4. Hence the phantom-like black clothing, and the big numeral "2" on the shirt. Let's use our heads, fellas?

Any good stories from veterans, active? A good story that I have has to do with my Bn.

We were getting the ole Bn. photos taken at BN. HQ. Therefore, each company was there. Every company is directly attatched to the BN. except for ours, which is kind of a "satellite" unit. Anyway, that point is important, on to the story. As we stood in line-abreast formation (by companies) we were recieving orders, which were usually promptly replied to by the rest of the Bn. (excluding us) by "RAM TOUGH!" <- The slogan for those companys' particular post. However, whence one order was given, a particularly bad reply was given, and one of the cadre members gave it the ole "I caaaaant heaaar youuuu!" routine, and we (remember, not a unit assigned to that particular post, therefore not responsible for the Bn. reply) and the rest of the Bn. do a left quarter turn and drop to the floor. Time to push! (Push-ups 'til you drop fer all you non-hacker types.)

I got more stories, chillun, so gather 'round!

Quote[/b] ]Norwegians' Kosovo 'surfari' leaves Serbia and NATO fuming

Sun May 22, 7:24 PM ET

PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro (AFP) - A spoof music video by Norwegian peacekeepers in Kosovo, set to the Beach Boys hit "Kokomo", has sparked a diplomatic spat between Norway and Serbia and given ammunition to critics of the NATO-led force in the province.

The three-minute clip filmed on a hand-held digital camera features Norwegian troops dancing in fields and military bases as they sing their own version of the dreamy surf song.

The original tune about Kokomo beach in Florida is transformed into a biting satire on international intervention in places like Kosovo and Rwanda.

"Somalia, Grenada, rescuing Kuwait, we screw ya, Rawanda, wish we could have helped ya, Iraqi embargo ... " they croon, with backing vocals and dance routines performed in combat boots and camouflage gear.

"Down in Kosovo, we'll kick some ass and then we'll see how it goes, and then we really don't know. Good luck to Kosovo.

"Every time we go to little places like Kosovo, we never really know what happens after we go ... It's Europe and NATO, why the hell do we go?"

NATO intervened in Kosovo in 1999 to end former Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on the independence-seeking ethnic Albanian majority in the southern province.

Belgrade has never been shy about criticising NATO's interference, which did not have immediate UN approval and exposed the Serb minority in Kosovo to revenge attacks by ethnic Albanian extremists.

But the Serbian government was still unable to see the funny side of the Norwegians' parody, particularly the jabs at "Serbian bad guys" and references to Belgrade's past oppression of the Kosovo Albanians.

Fully armed and patrolling deserted Kosovo backroads, the Norwegians sing "protecting human rights, air strikes and firefights, and we'll be dropping bombs wherever Serbian bad guys hide ... just up from Kosovo (in Serbia)".

"Somewhere far overseas there's a place called Kosovo, that's where you don't want to go if you're Albanian at all... Milosevic, you son of a bitch."

Serbian television stations broadcast the video clip and it quickly became an Internet hit throughout the Balkans, sparking a row between Belgrade and Oslo and forcing Norwegian ambassador Hans Ola Urstad to formally apologise.

"I really hope this incident will not disturb the lasting and deep friendly relations between our countries," he said Tuesday, promising to launch an official investigation into the song.

Slobodan Samardzic, an advisor to the Serbian prime minister, said the song was proof that the NATO mission in Kosovo (KFOR) was an abysmal failure.

"Such things only help the Serbian side to prove that there is no security in Kosovo, no respect for human rights and no multi-ethnicity," he grumbled.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has about 17,000 troops in Kosovo, more than any other deployment including Afghanistan. They are supposed to be providing security between the ethnic Albanian majority, which wants independence, and the ethnic Serb minority, which wants to stay with Serbia.

But the alliance is regularly accused of failing to protect the Serbs, who live in constant fear of attack by Albanian extremists. Scores of thousands of Kosovo Serbs are refugees, too scared to return.

Last year KFOR failed to stop mobs of ethnic Albanians from rampaging through supposedly protected Serb enclaves for three days. One NATO commander described the violence, the worst since the 1998-1999 conflict, as an organised campaign of "ethnic cleansing" -- exactly what the alliance intervened to stop.

KFOR headquarters in Kosovo was stung by the joke, describing the Norwegians' song as a "stupid and unacceptable private initiative of some soldiers".

"The behavior of the singers and the words of the song are unworthy of NATO and KFOR," the command said in a statement.

"Their inadmissible joke must not hide the high level of professionalism and impartiality of the 17,000 soldiers of KFOR who currently and every single day work to implement a safe and secure environment in Kosovo."

While Belgrade fumed and NATO squirmed, Kosovo Albanians seemed to share the Norwegians' irreverent take on the situation.

"The clip shows that international soldiers in Kosovo are not machines but humans with feelings and opinions about reality. I don't find the clip offensive but instructive," Kosovo Albanian art editor Arif Muharremi said.

The clip is available at http://www.big-boys.com/articles/Kosovo.html. Since making the video last year, the soldiers involved have finished their tour of duty in Kosovo and returned to Norway.

My old man was on C130s for 8 years and always came home with funny stories.

Tornado Pilots crossing the atlantic always took the piss out of the Herc guys because they were so slow. The lumbering transport's crew always came back with the quip,

"At least we can turn two engines off and have a cup of tea."

Not bad I guess, but if you think about it, the Tornado guys could be sitting at home having that cup of tea whilst my dad was still trying to catch some sleep in the hold.

Pobably a lot more than just a couple, and you could expect some internal damage and spinal injury. Not funny either way, although it illustrates why we were told never to stand directly behind the breech.

From: Herald Sun

TWO Russian soldiers are in trouble after driving an armoured personnel carrier 40km to buy vodka.

They were caught after crashing through a fence into a used-car showroom, demolishing several vehicles, on the way back.

The soldiers took the armoured vehicle from their military base, near Yekaterinburg in Siberia, and drove it to the nearest town.

After finding vodka they started heading back to the base but their driving declined as they sampled their shopping.

They were arrested by police who caught up with them after the APC broke down.
