der bastler 0 Posted September 11, 2004 The sixth incarnation of IE still can't follow proper standards? http://www.w3c.org/Graphics/PNG/ Some tests: http://www.w3c.org/Graphics/PNG/inline-alpha.html http://www.w3c.org/Graphics/PNG/inline-alpha-table Edit: Should look like this: http://www.ofp-zone.de/bastler/rl_photo/enterprise_desktop08.jpg (see shadow effect over Dublin?) der bastler 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Now all pins lead to a description at http://en.wikipedia.org Even the blue ones. Except for... ...Chatellerault (no article at all) ...Brühl, NRW (there's only a German article) ...Jever (there's only a German article) ...Lauta (there's only a German article) If you come from these towns or know something about them, feel free to enter some informations (ran? Mr Burns?). Everbody can participate. Amazing how many tiny towns in America got entries. Even my Hanover district home town Langenhagen got one, although it's rather short. Seems I've to add some pictures and additional informations in the next weeks. Fascinating! Changelog: - fixed the "reddish" australia map - added town information links
ran 0 Posted September 11, 2004 I'll work on that i'll take my time though ;)

theavonlady 2 Posted September 12, 2004 The sixth incarnation of IE still can't follow proper standards? FYI, I see the pin's white background with IE6 as well.
adam.ni 0 Posted September 12, 2004 I think blaster said that IE6 was still  not able to show alpha textures and therefore you should use another browser like Mozilla as it shows the transparency.  Its also free and fairly small at about 12 MB for a whole browser package and downloadable too  .  I downloaded and installed it along side my internet explorer though IE is still my prefered main browser so to open the map page i have to click on the Mozilla shortcut to start it up and stick in the web address and you should be fine  .  I only got it to see the map properly myself. Nice job der bastler now my home town is on the community world map
-33ker 0 Posted September 12, 2004 @Avon: Me too... I can't believe they even have information on Pickert at Wikipedia! @ bastler: Could you change my location from Detmold to Lippe? Detmold ist the nearest town, but I'd like to represent Lippe as a whole. You don't even have to move the pin on the map. ;)
Placebo 29 Posted September 12, 2004 Can you put mine in Grimsby/England please, of course I don't live there now but I don't think there's any point putting another one in Prague and Grimsby was my home for 31 years If you put the pin in the right leg of the h of the word manchester that's pretty close Edit: Just had a thought about something that ties into previous OT threads, instead of linking to wikipedia, how about linking to the local newspaper for each person? Maybe that would be more interesting? IMO Example http://www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk/ is the website for my local paper the "Grimsby Evening Telegraph"
raedor 8 Posted September 12, 2004 well done, bastler. don't we have any people from africa, south america and asia?
mr burns 132 Posted September 12, 2004 Edit: Just had a thought about something that ties into previous OT threads, instead of linking to wikipedia, how about linking to the local newspaper for each person? Maybe that would be more interesting? IMO Example http://www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk/ is the website for my local paper the "Grimsby Evening Telegraph" basically a good idea... but i think them homepage must be written in english for that ? reading arabic newspapers isn´t fun it´s a pitty that wikipedia is missing english information for brühl.. maybe i´ll translate the german article but this will take a long time... As for the other cities --I don't know if anyone can read the http://www.Langenhagener-Echo.de So I'll continue to link the pins against wikipedia, but you can propose a better target for your town if it's legible, i.e. english... Johann "onn" Bitsoenn 0 Posted September 12, 2004 Check this map engine. Since jabber is generally surrounded by open-source people, I think you won't find any problem to talk with this guy so that he can borrow you the map engine and the documentation on "how to add". Then you could host it and maintain the map :] http://www.ralphm.net/world?language=en
der bastler 0 Posted September 12, 2004 Check this map engine. Since jabber is generally surrounded by open-source people, I think you won't find any problem to talk with this guy so that he can borrow you the map engine and the documentation on "how to add". Then you could host it and maintain the map :]http://www.ralphm.net/world?language=en Thanks for the hint. He uses a solution similar to my system. I have a map on which I position small pictures of pins as anchors with a title property. He uses a map on which he positions anchors using the "area" tag plus a complex JavaScript for the mouseover effect. Hmm, I wanted to avoid JavaScript. I'm thinking of creating some kind of database (a text file would do) and a Makefile to "compile" the map pages. The Makefile checks whether a continent's data was changed and then creates the html file by concatenating a basic layout file plus the pin code elements. Advantage: I only have to maintain the database, statistics would be much easier. But due to my internship I compare the amount of work to create a proper Makefile with the amount of work to add new pins manually. And atm the latter is easier. Edit: A quick'n'dirty hack of a(n empty) Makefile <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE"> # Makefile for the OFP Maniac Locator # start up terminal window, change to OFP Maniac Locator working directory, enter "make" # enter "make clean" for clean up procedures all: map.html europe.html namerica.html samerica.html africa.html asia.html australia.html # here goes the code to compose the complete file set, e.g. copy all mentioned files to the right directory # perhaps one could even incorporate an automatic upload, but imo it's a security risk to have the # password in plain text in a script, even if it's in my home directory... map.html: database.txt map_basic.html # todo: code to look up the database for statistics on the title page (how many Maniacs per continent, etc...) europe.html: database.txt europe_basic.html pin_code_template.txt # todo: code to look up the database and add the correct pin code to the basic file namerica.html: database.txt namerica_basic.html pin_code_template.txt # todo: code to look up the database and add the correct pin code to the basic file samerica.html: database.txt samerica_basic.html pin_code_template.txt # todo: code to look up the database and add the correct pin code to the basic file africa.html: database.txt africa_basic.html pin_code_template.txt # todo: code to look up the database and add the correct pin code to the basic file asia.html: database.txt asia_basic.html pin_code_template.txt # todo: code to look up the database and add the correct pin code to the basic file australia.html: database.txt australia_basic.html pin_code_template.txt # todo: code to look up the database and add the correct pin code to the basic file clean: # todo: code to clean up, e.g. delete all generated files
