Acecombat 0 Posted December 22, 2003 Miles man i think its th Javelins thats ruining it , the Marines dont ngage armor vry well and usually get chopped down plus the SMAW isnt powerful to damage a tank/bmp(maybe) ... thats whats hurt , plus thse units look too shy whenthey see the enemy they usually run back and come again (lol) wierd somewhat. Yeah, the AI just can't wrap their binary heads around the Javelin concept. That's a known issue, and is native to OFP's AI, not the MAP.
miles teg 1 Posted December 22, 2003 Miles man i think its th Javelins thats ruining it , the Marines dont ngage armor vry well and usually get chopped down plus the SMAW isnt powerful to damage a tank/bmp(maybe) ... thats whats hurt   , plus thse units look too shy whenthey see the enemy they usually run back and come again (lol) wierd somewhat. Nah its not the Javelins... that's another issue.  As for retreating, if you don't want them to retreat, simply put this in their "init" box on the unit menu of the squad leader: this allowfleeing 0; That way they won't flee when they encounter heavy fire. The SMAW I also noticed the AI had trouble with in terms of shooting it accurately.  On one mission I made they were engaging a BMP2 and they kept hitting short of the target.  So accuracy of the SMAW with the AI I think needs to be worked on.  However eventually one of the SMAW gunners got the BMP.  In real life, even though it's not designed for killing main battle tanks, I've seen video of US Marines destroying T-72 tanks with SMAW rockets to the turret of the tank.  I'm not sure if an AT-4 rocket (that the US Army uses) could have done that.  When I was in the Army, they always told us that, at best, against a main battle tank we'd be lucky to get a mobility kill with an AT-4 unless we hit the tank in the rear.  But I'm not sure how accurate that information was as the South Vietnamese Army was able to kill lots of North Vietnamese T54/55 tanks using the weaker LAW rockets that the AT-4 replaced.  Anyhoo... the SMAW I believe is more powerful so it should give T-72 and lighter armored tanks some serious problems. I just got finished with testing out the SMAW on heavy armor, and actually it does do an excellent job at mobility kills on everything except the BIS made T80 which took all 3 rockets (one AT and the two HE rockets) to cause the crew to bail out.  With the reactive armor-protected T80, this is probably fairly accurate.  So overall I can't really complain too much.  Also when I just tested it out, the SMAW gunner seemed to fire more accurately so perhaps it was just because the first round didn't kill the BMP2 (hitting the front armor), I thought the gunner had missed.  So overall I really like the SMAW, but perhaps the lethality could just be increased just a tad to insure one hit, one kill destruction of BMP's because in real life just about ANYTHING that penetrates a BMP (even .50 cal bullets) is going to cause major dammage due to all the ammunition and fuel stored in bad locations in the BMP-1 and 2  (although the BMP2 at least doesn't have the fuel tanks on the rear doors).  Any penetration of a high explosive round is almost certain going to blow out the doors and everything inside.  That's why normally when you see pictures of destroyed Iraqi BMP's and light armor the hatches and doors are all open.  This is due to the tremendous pressure generated by both the HEAT or HE warheads that penetrated them and/or because the penetrating rounds came into contact with ammunition or explosives of some sort in the BMP's.  Anyhoo... it's ok with me if the dammage levels on the SMAW aren't changed as that makes things more challenging... and as any US Marine will tell you, Marines like a challenge.  Right now they're kicking ass all over the place on the Tonal map along with Scorpio's CH-53, the F/A-18 addon (with the USMC Hornets) and Operation Northstar's USMC LAV-25 IFV's that they released not along ago.  Oh...and the HTTV recon vehicle and TOW's AAV-7.   All that stuff combined along with the BAS stuff make for some good combat action when ya stick 'em in the Tonal map.  Try them in some urban combat action on the Tonal map and they really kick ass.  I'm working on a hostage rescue mission right now (rescuing missionaries) and I had one CQB team that I was leading.  A Tonal militia member snuck up to my flank and I turned around just in time to see my Marine CQB (entry) team member blow the crap out of him with a well placed buckshot round from his shotgun.  I just wish they had slugs as well like the FDF shotguns.   The CQB patrol guys are also fantastic for covert missions... they really sneak around quite nicely and the suppressors work well on their M4's.  For anyone who wants a Marine Sniper they can just take their pick of the nice Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle addons out there and use that with the Marine soldier of their choice in this pack.  Personally I prefer Cheeky Monkey's Barrett rifle. But I do hope that later on a M40 and a Barrett are added to this pack.  Also custom sounds triggered by enemy detection would be good as well... stuff like instead of the leader saying "contact" he would say something like, "SEMPER FI MOTHER F**KER!!!"  or yell "Hoooorah!"   Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>
AKM 0 Posted December 22, 2003 Miles Teg, good post. Yes, those would be great soundbites. For instance, if its detected that you have been shot - and then you take down the guy who shoots you: "Semper Fi! Muddaf**cker!" Now I would pay to hear that. miles teg 1 Posted December 22, 2003 I'm trying to work on a mission but sadly work gets in the way... got a ton of papers for a journal to copy edit and then I'm on a week long vacation on the 26th. Speaking of which... I need to get back to work. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Harkonin 0 Posted December 22, 2003 Increase their skill dude, if that doesn't do it for you toss in an extra Autorifleman and if that don't do it make a simple script using domove getpos player and dofire player with knowsabout.

Harnu 0 Posted December 22, 2003 Anyone who is having with AI aiming that SMAW, if you are in command, tell them to hold fire first off. Then target the armor piece, they then take out their SMAW and aim, putting the hold fire on adds a slight bit of extra time to aim. Then tell them to fire, or open fire. It's a dead on hit if you do it right. As for the SMAW not having enough power, make sure you are using the AT rounds for armor and the HE rounds for infantry. You'll have a bad day trying to take out armor with HE rounds.
AKM 0 Posted December 22, 2003 And don't underrate those HE rounds for killing either soft targets (Trucks) or massed infantry. That SMAW HE came in handy for blasting me a path through many raging Tonalese Militia. Now, this is a bit of an endorsement, but the ultimate compliment to the Naval Infantrymen are the APC's from the VIT APC Pack. A link to it (OFP.INFO) is here. Enjoy. I suppose you already knew how useful they are. AK
Sharia 0 Posted December 22, 2003 I'm having a slight problem with the SMAW launcher controlled by AI. Not the accuracy, no... I can work around that, but in a mission I am making 2 versions of, (BAS for one, suchey/earl marines for the other) there is an annoying problem. A T72 tank trundles down a road, and I had everyone hold fire, and then told 3, who was a SMAW launcher guy to target the T72. He did so, and I told him to fire one of his two AT rounds. The AT round blew the T72 to bits, and he said "T72 is history" so I was about to stand up, and he fired his SECOND SMAW AT round at the tank! For no reason! The fact that there's only TWO SMAW soldiers in my squad, and you have to take on a T80 and a Shilka later really messed me up. The soldiers are being too gung-ho. Sharia 0 Posted December 22, 2003 The soldiers are being too gung-ho. lol what do you expect?? They're Marines! While this is true, I'd rather not have to take 5 SMAW launcher soldiers along with me, that'd look a bit silly if you ask me. Oh, I'll be doing a "delux" version that has all the enemy soldiers replaced for EARL/Suchey soldiers, including spetsnaz, and BAS Rangers AND Marines using Earl's lovely M16s, M249s and M4s. Bit stuck on wether or not I should use BAS Blackhawks to carry the marines, though.

miles teg 1 Posted December 22, 2003 I agree. Just use Scorpio's CH-53. It's slow, but the AI flies it well (difficult for helicopter addons that size). Its only downside is that it doesn't have a doorgunner. But other then that it has nice animations, good sounds, and good scripts. Plus it just looks so cool seeing that huge CH-53 coming in to pick your guys up. There is also a Seahawk addon out, but it has some texture problems. If the Seakhawk didn't get a big white square from a distance, I'd use it like crazy with these Marines. Hopefully that'll be fixed soon. All we need now is a AH-1W Super Cobra for close air support and a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter (the main assault helicopter of the USMC).
