HotShot 0 Posted May 12, 2006 The Butterfly pictures are great Killagee, particuly the rain one. How do you get them so sharp though? A high maginify lens, or just practice? I can never get it dead on like that, they are always slightly out of focus. I had a go at taking an insect but it is blurry. This one i lke just as it makes the sky look like Cottenwall. DBR_ONIX 0 Posted May 12, 2006 I'm assuming it's a macro lens, though you should be able to get half-decent macro shots with any cameras macro-mode with a bit of practice, and either a tripod, or bright-lighting (to get rid of camera shake) That second shot is nice, would have been good if you cropped the bits of trees out though - Ben Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
killagee 0 Posted May 13, 2006 Its all about that hair-thin line between lots of light (sun+flash) , enough Depth of field to include your subject in focus, and a steady hand... When you are getting this close using a macro lens, the DOF becomes crucial. Ie: f4 will be enough to incl the insects head, f9 might give you the wings as well, but to get the whole insect you are looking at f18! Now that is a tiny amount of light getting into the lens... There for you need lots of flash! Add to that the fact that the camera is handheld ( its too hard trying to compose shots on a moving subject with a tripod...but monopods can work) and you need to get your shutter speed up to at least 1/350 to get rid of camera shake... You can help things by bringing your ISO up to 800 or so, but then you will get alot of noise (especially if you have a D70 like me ...) Usually I just set the camera to ISO 400, 1/250, f11 and the flash to TTL (BL)... Here are a few more bugs... you can see the precise DOF you can get in the first shot... He climbed right onto my flash for a while... Must have been freaky for him when it was going off... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I can't even tell what bugs if not plain fly's, the single wing makes it look like they have the same pair. It looks so very alien.
