"Impulse" (Convolution Reverb Mod)

Recommended Posts

OK, I just listened and I like what I'm hearing.

Has anybody tries this on a server with 30+ players and dozens of AI? I'm worried it might affect performance negatively.

Two examples I just recorded, using vanilla sounds + RHS M4.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STjzj9zEWdc

There's a weird clipping happening between the additional layer of 'moving air with bullet', sometimes it almost sounds like 2 bullets were fired at the same time. The volume difference between inside vs. outside is a bit overwhelming. The reverb sounds dirty, 'cheap' so to speak.

It's less noticeable when firing single shots but I think there's ways to improve it still.

I'll keep an eye on this, looks promising!

Hey mate,

Im having an issue.

For me the mod sounds like this:

You can't hear the actual gun sound and just some white noise and a weird "popp" whenever you shoot.

Any clue why this happens?

I tested out v1.2 on Saturday during my units weekly campaign OP (fits the 30+ player and dozens of AI category). I'm pretty sure that I was the only one using Impulse and I was, as usual, one of the only ones NOT complaining about terrible frame rates. Will it have an effect on frame rate? Sure, any addition of code will, but in the situations that drop my frame rate the most, this mod does not impact performance enough to make or break playability- That is, if I'm in a situation where my frames are shitty, they are going to be shitty regardless if this mod is on or not. I would say if you like it, then use it.

One of the only negative things I could say about using this mod is that sometimes it will pick up some stray reverb from an object or objects that probably shouldn't produce such a strong effect. Other than that I'm really digging what's been dubbed "slap back". It is a pretty dominant sound so a lot of guns will sound very similar unless you have good ears, but overall this mod produces the sounds I always felt were missing in ArmA. Very good work thus far zooloo.

*Note: I'm running this with DragonFyre RC5

yea i agree. it could help to make the sounds a little more subtle so the main shot sound is more pronounced. another idea would be to slightly pitch the slap sound according to caliber or some other config values to get some randomness in there. i'd also suggest making different slap back sounds for different weapon types but i tend to prefer intelligent systems that adapt on their own without too much extra content.

Really liking it - hair on the back of neck liking it... !

Running it on our L7A2 is awe inspiring... just fun to shoot at stuff in the editor !!

I've noticed it doesn't work too well with guns already configured with a custom sound reverb. I.e. a lot of the CUP weapons have one of LordJR's old JSRS sounds which come with simple reverb mixed onto the clip - they sound messy. I wonder if that M4 youtube clip above is suffering something similar?

Ideally I guess the weapon sounds need to be clean with no effects added for this to really shine.

I like where its going, but I am noticing that the 1.1 definitely had the "punchy" reverb I hear firing my own AR...actually went out the to range to compare on Sat.

1.3 (and I think 1.2) added a much longer and "tinnyer" (love making up words) sounds than you really hear. Tested 1.3 out next to structures and its definitely too treble / air whoosing / tinny. Even 75 feet from a metal structure (or any structure for that matter) and it sounds like your shooting right next to 55 gal drums. Fire my actual 556 Stag next to a wall and there is a much deeper bass / crack bounceback.

I think 1.1 had the right report...if you're looking for the realism when being on top of the rifle. 1.3 feels a little star wars, "phew, phew, phew"

Reverb on GL's would be a midrange "chuk" sound, not the tinny report.

Thanks for your observation, I'll see if I can emulate what you're describing.

I love the punch of 1.3 but agree the metallic ting noise you get from reverb off metal objects is much too strong. Shooting next to empty oilbarrels is a Great analogy

Hey, first of all I really like the mod you've put together here. It really adds impact to shooting and just generally improves everything. It goes super well with Dragonfyre Lite.

I'd just like to make a few suggestions/requests:

First of all, I agree about the "Tinny" Reverb noise issue. I noticed it shooting beside the metal railings at one of the Hill-lookouts on Altis. It's really prominent now that i've noticed it. And I agree it does sound like Star Wars blasters lol :p

Secondly could the volume values of the effects be lowered? Specifically Grenade explosions, they are way too loud, shooting indoors is too loud as well. rockets and even the slapback of both small arms and vehicles is a little too loud. It unfortunately creates a scenario where to play comfortably with Impulse I need to lower the in game sounds quite a lot. And that makes it hard to hear everything else. Regulating the sounds so there are less huge Volume spikes would be great. I remember in just 1.2 shooting out of a helicopter was literally deafening, and this was at less than half way in game volume and 35% windows volume. If they were lowered it would create a scenario where you can hear all aspects of the game and maintain the realism; without having ear hurting volume spikes.

Overall this is a pretty sick mod, it really brings firefights to a new level. Thanks for sharing it.

And yes, I did make a profile just to post here lol. :)

I can see some people definitely finding it too loud - I for one have it perfect I think with my setup , but some feedback from my unit was they found it too loud.

IS there a way you could add a user configurable volume some how ? I.e. a co-efficient we could tweak in a .txt file somewhere i.e. userconfig ?

That way we could tailor our own personal experience - would seriously win the hearts and minds in my Unit...

Every time I launch with this and fire a weapon, I keep wanting to do this: http://i.imgur.com/tI1Daip.jpg

I just love the slapback. This in combination with any sounds--even the new and ever-improving sounds the BIS department is putting out sound really sexy with this running. Glad to see the slapback made a comeback (did I just make a slight and horrible pun here? heh) with the update. I can definitely see this evolving into something really awesome over time. The slapback alone just really transforms how you feel firing a weapon. And this thing has even transformed some horrible made sounds you might come across in packs for weapons, etc into something you actually love using now, haha. When firing you just feel the weight, the kick, and gases (sounds like one of those really weird porns or something  ).

Anyways, just wanted to chime in again saying how much I've been enjoying this little system. Makes me hope that in the future other sound mods won't force their reverb systems so we can pair this with them better to avoid doubling effects, overpowering your slapback, causing bugs etc. Even if they don't, I sure as hell ain't giving up using this, that's for sure. Going to have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands....er, eardrums? You get the point. :p

Hi zooloo75 thanks for this very nice addon. Since your release I stopped using other sound mods, not needed any more :)

Now , if you can improve what you already have done you will be a king!

There again, men are supposed to act on it.:yay:

Good luck with it anyway.

Hey, I just wanted to clear up the confusion about my last post. The sounds for the most part are not too loud. It was actually because my headphones were in Dolby Headphone mode and for some reason that mode made the noises much louder. In stereo they sound just fine. The only one that is a little bit too loud is grenade explosions, but I understand those are WIP right now anyways right?

This might be dumb to ask but does this replace or enhance Bohemia's current plans with sound reverb with the Marksman DLC? It seemed they too were tackling this issue, and I'm unsure if it is dealt with better by the developers or the community.

May somebody give a link on v1.1 and v.1.2? v1.3 gives too much revebration, IMO.

I love this mod except for one thing, everytime i fire a gun there is a loud pop that sounds like banging pieces of wood together, these pops sound the same regardless of the gun, i saw someone mention this but it wasn't adressed.

Woah this mod sounds insane compared to anything I've heard in ArmA with Enhanced Soundscape before, I wish I'd tried it out before the links went down though.
I wonder if anyone has kept the mod downloaded all these years, it would be interesting to fiddle around with and maybe even help update :)
