ArmA3 performance survey

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've made a small survey to satisfy my curiosity and to help me make informed decisions.

SURVEY LINK NOW CLOSED

Once I collect a little bit of data, I'll publish some results and analysis. The idea is to try and find some sort of correlation between hardware + settings and performance satisfaction.

Live results

Due to demand and the much appreciated input of our community, I'll leave this survey to gather data on how your hardware impacts your performance and enjoyment of the platform.

I'll put another one up ASAP focused on multiplayer questions. If you can take a couple more minutes to fill this new one out, you'll be greatly contributing to furthering the communities knowledge and ability to enjoy this game.

Let me just say, the survey was pretty well done, and the questions where good.

Facinating numbers too. Right now, overall performance satisfaction is 50/50.

Well asked questions, hopefully BIS sees this and does something based on results :)

i think bis will do nothing ^^ the most of the workers by BIS are learned kids from the communtiy no specialistst.

the main background is when you deeper read in arma 2 and 3 forums is ---- why - its to many work , for what , we have to low people for this - the most users have no 64bit system, the server need its not , multicore its using etc.

that's the price when you have a team with young learned kids with no big experience - a long development time for little things ^^ see the two jets work over 4 months on it ^^

therefore I do not understand it, why does not spend any money for specialists. but a lot of money for a contest with a winner in the main section for oudside from militäry stuff-in which one is looking for new ideas in day z style - So you yourself have no ideas ..... and all what the contest will bring is altis-live ( you will see it ;) )

two good core programmers need for 6000-8000 lines code 3 weeks maby 4 ... and the most problems in the game would be solved. the bad scaling from the cpus and the not multicore optimatet servers ^^

ok the netcode need a rework to .....

A lot of spread on the ideal fps question since the question and its description are two completely different things.

Very nice. I suggest adding "Do you have a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system?"

also, it's "unknown", not "unkown"

Yeah. I answered 40, because that's where it gets (for me) playable without any real issues. Ideal would be 120+ with no framedrops whatsoever for a 120 hz display xD

and you see it in al lets plays with over millions of views - and all say good game ^^ bad performance and more bad with all new patches - bad mp perormance unplayble in the most of times, very clitchy models in the game , sometimes unplayable ... over years and now in dayz sa too ^^ and this outside from this forums - in the youtube world ..... where many new customers look this is a very bad advertising in the world.

the game its not new and over a year old ^^

the only is this game has no competitor - sunning it would play no more! that is your only happiness. yes its hard and yes its the frustrating reality

and many of the nebys here ( i play this game since 2001 ) become more and more the same impressive ... i have played now over 700 houres in the same time i have played ofp arma I + II 2000 houres ( the only played game for years evening for evening with my wife) but we lose the loss benny to and this was our favorit mode, its unplayble with arma 3... and the mp performance is the biggest killer.

and with the last patch is the teatimes down to - most of times 15 fps thats makes no fun and this with very very low 2 ai per town ..... pfffffffffffffffffff

Your saying BIS are learned kids? Horsecrap. They know what they are doing, Operation Flashpoint itself is older then a kid. And as for most users not having a 64 bit system. That's horsecrap as well, 64bit CPUs have been available for 10 years now. And systems have been using its capibilitys mainly for use of more then 4gb of RAM for years as well. BIS should have made this a 64 bit exe as well as better multithreading support. Heck the original FarCry from 10 years ago had a 64 bit patch, and modern games like Battlefield 4 have a 64bit exe as well as excellent multicore support.

That's pure bullshit. According to Steam, 75% of people have 64bit system.

Yes, all we need is a good programmer, any good programmer will do. Just give him 2 months and he'll fix 16 000 lines of code. Programming an engine for Arma 4 should only take 6 months for one good guy.

look at the pictures ;) look at the visitor videos ;) read the interviews over the years. the most dudes very very jung and come from the community to bis. this is not bad and its a good thing to give work to young peoples its wunderfull

but the other side its when over the half team has no skills because there are learning young people without experience. than has you this problem with the very long development times for all. or missing stuff completely because they simply can not !

and this game is their bread - and that seems to be forgotten

yes the game is very complexe - the other side is the most things are made only half. or removed or full with bugs ^^or only just begun not at all because it does not appear necessary.

many here already follow now 13 years

Bohimia loses the loss, because whining. i lose the loss because nothing is done and it can not be play in mp without pain for my eyes after 30 minutes or fluid play

i am curious how much one has fun with zeus with 15 fps in the middle :j:

sorry but you should not first create a base ??

somewhere they always start at the back of .....

is hard to see for a customer - he buys the expensive hardware a hell expensive big dedicated server. and then he see - the game used it not ....

ok ok its beta we will wait .... and wait and wait .... and nothing :D first the gamebase then the new features dudes ^^

do me the people suffering , have a dedicated server where purchased for 150 euro per month or more for nothing ...

Well asked questions, hopefully BIS sees this and does something based on results :)

You really think they're going to do anything about the performance of this game after showing that the game has received 0 true optimizations from Alpha? From Arma 2? FROM OP FLASHPOINT, A 2001 GAME!?

These guys have no interest in truly increasing performance for their games because they know it would require a heavy re-write of their engine to implement multithreaded rendering. They'd rather save money and time and not bother with this effort, providing an unplayable game in exchange for your hard earned cash. I'm sorry but 30 fps dips on MODEST graphics settings (2km view distance, 1km object distance and LOW object and terrain quality) on a very high end gaming PC (rig specs in signature) is just completely unacceptable.

This game could be something else, something truly amazing and open the doors for even better visuals and a more dynamic world. But it requires multithreaded rendering, something Bohemia has no interest in achieving.

You guys better get used to that horrible frame-rate. It's working as intended.

Interesting result in the "Happy with performance" question. 50% so far say they're happy with it. Looking at these forums you'd think the number would be around 10%. I guess the complaining people are the loudest, as always, and the satisfied ones don't even bother to post about performance or are silenced by the angry mob.

@ChaddlesG: Could you make the individual results public? I'd like to do my own analysis just for interest. Or do you plan to do yours first at least?

Yes, I do understand the MP performance is a problem. But still, half of the people seem to happy with overall performance, both SP and MP combined. That's what was surprising to me.

I'm happy with both. It could be much better but I mostly have playable performance when I get to choose the mission or server.

... very good idea, this survey ...

The only infos i miss are OS details like:

32/64 bit and 7/8 or 8.1 version.

(i personally run my monitor at 50Hz, but had to select 60Hz in survey, because 50 is not available)

Thanks for your effort making this survey available,

Fred41

Interesting to see that most people don't OC their CPU's. I would have thought it was a given especially with the i5's and i7's.

to the survey - army phone home over steam ;) the dudes see what he will see ^^

and your system has no relevance in the MP ^^ the bad fps come from the servers.

in the single player arma runs good on my 3 year old system no problems. the multi core scaling is not the best- but with 45-60 fps is ok for me

Funny thing is, I said I'm happy with the performance in single player, but that doesn't mean I don't think it could be vastly improved. I actually ummed-and-ahhed about that one for a while as the wording of the question is a bit ambiguous. I'm 'happy' with it as I find it playable at 25-35FPS, but could I be much happier if I got a stable 40-60? Hell yes I could.

Filled it in.

Just a little note, my performance is better compared to Arma 2 since I have a much better PC (I went from my crappy laptop to an i7).

Also, in MP it just depends where you play. In A2 on my laptop I could get 30fps on my clan server playing insurgency or stock domi, but going on certain servers (15th MEU ACE Domi as an example - they aren't the only ones) where the whole base is littered with stuff, or have hexibarriers around the ENTIRE base, would cause a fps drop, this still happens with A3 on my new computer. However, I just tend to avoid these kinds of servers nowadays (and make missions within the clan that perform well and are sensibly designed)

I suppose people think "happy" as opposed to "sad", not as "being completely overwhelmed with feelings of joy and satisfaction about overall performance. Yay!".

I answered yes; because I can live with it and do enjoy it a lot for the most part.

I think you need at least 40 FPS average to play arma 3 well. Even then the game has stutters. And I don´t think that more powerfull hardware really helps. Just take a look at the trailers BIS makes, every few seconds the game stutters, even on their PCs.

Also I can get nice 55 FPS average in the Editor, but as soon as you add a few AI groups the performance goes down the drain.
