It's definitely a big improvement over the old fog. How would you tweak it?
St. Jimmy 272 Posted April 25, 2013 Looks very lovely. But I agree it needs some tweaking and what wouldn't when it's first implemented. Color tweaking comes first in my mind. It looks blue/lilac on my screen but fog has the same color that clouds have so it needs to be white/gray and maybe pinch of blue. Also the view distance fog needs to come more to the very light blue IMO. Second thing is you can see maybe too well into the fog from above if you compare it how you can see inside the fog in front of you.
NordKindchen 12 Posted April 25, 2013 Sadly I havent seen the new fog ingame yet. Is there maybe some fog showcase mission or sth? Greets
Smurf 12 Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) I like it too. Some cold days in the morning I can't barely see the hill\mountain next to my house, nor the top of others far away. So it would be nice if we could set it to high altitudes *only* and make it disperse or fallout over time, just to add some immersion. Anyway, I'm fine with it as right now (at least, visualy speaking. Didn't test any AI or other system yet) Edited April 25, 2013 by Smurf

Greets Just download the dev patch, go in the editor, hit esc and put this on the config box: 0 setFog [density, falloff, base level]; Watch the video to get hints what values you should use inside []
dmarkwick 261 Posted April 25, 2013 Unfortunately I'm waiting on it making the stable build. My iNet is quite slow so I can't change back & forth easily.
MattWales 10 Posted April 25, 2013 Looks excellent to me, not only will it make games a bit more interesting and firefights more "intense" - lets be honest, that one you just had at 300m is going to be a damn sight more tricky at 30m - but CAS goes out the window unless you are using FLIR or GPS guided ordinance. Thats a point - is the game scripted to allow FLIR to look through fog? Whilst I doubt providing GPS coordinates for JDAMs is built into the game, the ability to use FLIR to deliver weapons through low-lying FOG should be create some interesting scenarios... "Type 2 in effect..." Aside of that, and perhaps most importantly, the landscape looks pretty cool with low-level fog.

zebra 10 Posted April 26, 2013 Dslyecxi's video looks just awesome. Until now I didn't play it myself but can imagine how this new fog implements many new tactical aspects to the game (as Dslyecxi explains in video also). Best looking fog so far in any game I saw !! Zorg_DK 10 Posted April 26, 2013 The fog is nice, but maybe it looks a little too purple.

myngos211 10 Posted April 26, 2013 Absolutely love the fog effect. Not sure why, but I don't see it overly blue like some are reporting. Doesn't seem to affect the AI though, I set up a mission (of which I'm an observer only...testing) with 100% fog and the AI reacted the same way as if there wasn't from what I could tell...but I couldn't see a dang thing, just the noise of battle. Even the heli on a search and destroy waypoint was seemingly unaffected whereas in the real world, they wouldn't even consider being in the air in the first place. But still, I really dig the fog. A mist slider would be pretty cool but maybe once they give us the rain option, a low setting will be like a mist. Can only wait and see.
bad benson 1733 Posted April 26, 2013 Doesn't seem to affect the AI though hmmm. i didn't test it with choppers or anything but my simple tests indicate something else. you might check out that simple video i made. there definitely is an effect on the AI. victim913 10 Posted April 26, 2013 Oh man, you are preaching to the choir! This fog sucks really bad. It's blue. Not only is it blue, The retarded extreme blue sky and water help make the island look like summer. The fog does not fit at all with clear skies. The worst part is, that the fog is as close to you as 50 meters while the view distance is over 1000. The only way to get rid of it is to set view distance really far away which affects your fps. OA won't show close fog unless view is set lower than 800-600. The sky and the water make the island look fake, like BF3. And try this, set time at about 1700 in summer where it still looks like day. Then set overcast and it looks like 2100 with a purple sky. Overcast shouldn't change sky color. Overcast would be gray not purple.

That's good to hear, I didn't really test for it, just something I thought I observed. Maybe the way my mission was set up caused it to act the same. I'm not doubting your results, I'm glad you took the time to test it specifically. Thanks for the vid!
chrisb 196 Posted April 27, 2013 I like the new fog, it adds great atmosphere. I’m glad their dealing with these really important issues, like fog, whilst leaving the ai, movement, etc alone, obviously these things are less important..

Harzach 2517 Posted April 27, 2013 I hope that a certain moderately popular horror-themed mod is going to be all over this new fog engine... Since the mod is for Arma 2, probably not. I would imagine the standalone version will make fine use of it, though.
Longjocks 0 Posted April 27, 2013 It's been a while since I've toyed around with these games so I can't quite remember all the little details of how fog was compared to how it is now. It looks good and I look forward to working out how to play with the settings a bit more. At the moment with the density on max in the weather settings seems low when in the game. I'll have to work on that and how to adjust the height and fall-off later (if that has to be scripted I've not done anything like that in 10 years). And just to confirm, is a higher overcast setting supposed to reduce the fog rendered for a longer view distance? It seems to be behaving that way (and remember, it's been a while so I'm unsure). There are certain conditions that produce that more distinct blue fog people are talking about. It probably wouldn't seem completely out of place on a moonlit night. One thing that would also be nice, but maybe not possible in the engine, is for fog effects not to be rendered inside fully enclosed buildings.

Mattar_Tharkari 10 Posted April 27, 2013 The new fog system (only available on DEV branch) is excellent. The way it sinks into the valleys leaving the ridges clear is great!

Mattar_Tharkari 10 Posted April 28, 2013 (edited) I have lived by the coast for 1/2 my life and fog only forms when there are high pressure conditions. The sea is flat calm, no wind and no overcast at all. There is usually clear blue sky above the fog layer and you can get above it simply by driving inland and gaining altitude. I think the BIS model is very good. Edited April 28, 2013 by Mattar_Tharkari
