Is Arma 3 authentic?

Recommended Posts

Looks like a lean, mean, Iranian fighting machine if I ever saw one - http://www.abload.de/img/244149_19664967038177t0ig7.jpg Stick another flag, touch up geometry here and there, and voila, MOSSAD won't go after our Devs. Hopefully. :D.

Ironically enough, that's the NATO "version" of the Merkava, the Iranians use hex camo. The IFF situation is the only reason I hope that BI is making another tank for either OPFOR or NATO. I feel like sorting the goats from the sheep as it is now is going to be maddening in anything but the best visual conditions.

Not sure if that was sarcasm or not, if it was, disregard this post

Wouldn't make sense to have the same tanks on both sides in different camos/configurations. BI already have great M1A2 models - might as well reuse them. :)

In fact the M1A2 models are not that great anymore, look at them and you see that it's still the M1A1 from Armed Assault with bolt on features. Its the same like the M16M203 model that dates back to OFP like the skoda cars. I would not further encourage BIS to reuse models that way.

On the M1A1 - yeah, but I think the M1A2 TUSKs are somewhat new, or I could've confused them with the M1A2 SEP/TUSK tanks from ACE 2. xD

A proposed 3rd revision of the M1 could be used with some variety of the same model and touch ups to the features like futuristic ERA armour, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Abrams#Future

The M1A3 Abrams is in the early design period with the U.S. Army. The Army aims to build prototypes by 2014 and to begin to field the first combat-ready M1A3s by 2018 or 2019.

The M1A2 SEP TUSK Abrams and a modernized M1 Abrams were included in the Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) Analysis of Alternatives (AOA). Vehicles included in the AOA were determined to be inferior to the planned GCV. The U.S. Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli commended the M1 Abrams program and recommended a similar approach for the GCV program The Ground Combat Vehicle family of vehicles is the planned successor to the M1 as well as many other U.S. Army vehicles. However, the Army anticipates that the M1A1 will remain in U.S. service until at least 2021, and the M1A2 to beyond 2050.

I guess the choice for NATO MBT would be story-dependent here.

Is it me or does the whole in-game model look elongated and flattened compared to the original? Could be the angle of the screenshot.

Probably the angle. Looks like that to me. Shot woth different kinds of FOV to describe it simply.

Definately, the render would be akin to taking a picture relatively close up while the second image would be zoomed in from distance. Same thing that happens when using "Perspective" vs "User" in a 3D program.

This is the kind of authenticity I want;

I don't understand, are you talking about the dog in the back seat? Hehe

Iranians are very good at making copies of everything, like chinese.

Months ago Iranian computer engineers landed a top secret american drone, while american drone controllers thought the plane was landing at their base in Pakistan. Nowadays Iran has probably hundreds of copies.

Why not reverse-engineer their enemy tanks. ;)

by the way there is no autenticity in that video.

90% of combat footage of the americans is fake, and staged to show of with girlfriends and mates back home ;)

Uhh...either you have a strange sense of humor or just don't like Americans.

On the other, as Russian I'm pretty tired to see Russians on the side or Russian-made armament at the hands of OPFOR, whoever it be: Chinese, Iranians, rogue Americans, Nazis, Martians or Giant Dinosaurs from Outer Space. I'd rather prefer to see "Armata" used by Russians themselves, in a Russian-themed DLC or community-made addon.

This! A russian based DLC would be it, i don't think they would be just sitting there while WWIII is unfolding, do you?

If we use Arma 3 as a platform (thats what it actually is from my perspective) and expand it, who cares about it beeing not 100% authentic when it comes out.

We have great devs and a great modding community, together they will make this a truly epic game.

Off topic: By the way I would not complain hearing more about armata, even if it is only speculation.

I think it's authentic enough.Using "prototype" equipment and/or vehicles is fine with me. As long as BI sticks with the same game play they've had over the last ~12 years. That was always one thing I could count on from title to title; Consistent game play mechanics, and not trying to over do the game aka ruining the game. With each release the infantry movement has gotten better. The graphics have gotten better. Pretty much all I can ask for with each new release. Now we're going to be able to dive too!!

Pretty much what I'm thinking, since this has been an alternate timeline ever since 1985 (Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis/ARMA: Cold War Assault) where there's no guarantee that anything in our timeline after 1985 happened in that timeline as well, so who's to say that some of those real-world prototypes didn't end up in production in the Armaversum, or that technology didn't develop differently? I say this although BI has gone all the way in making outright fictional weapons or rechambering real-world small arms to 6.5 x 39 mm (I'm guessing 6.5 mm Grendel) as well.

Funnily enough, the deactivated 7th ID has been completely reactivated this year. So Arma 3s authenticity is increased by depicting an active Combat Unit.

Unfortunately they will be geared and trained towards operating in the Pacific TOP, probably in case the whole Japan X China thing goes south.

http://www.army.mil/media/267489

This also gives incentive to make fancy reskins for the existing OA US Army units as light fighters. Interestingly, 7th ID is not a light infantry division anymore, but a mech. infantry running Strykers. Also, UCP all up in this female dog. I am wondering if the Iran pick is actually less realistic than Codies decision to make China the "Bad guy". The difference will be that it´ll be between Japan and China over Islands that have nothing but sentimental, nationalistic value.

So, in a curious development of history, the pick of Iran and Greece becomes less politically inflammatory than the other choice.

Thoughts?

I still think the choice works well right now.

Based off of the storyline it seems that the Chinese haven't been ruled out yet - the "ArmA 3 background" states that the Chinese and Russians have strong ties with the Iranians, and the U.S. is "locked into its own proxy-wars against aggressive Chinese expansionism in the Pacific". I could see that making a great expansion - with the Iranian conflict raging, the Chinese heavily increases its forces in the Pacific in the belief that the U.S. is much less likely to intervene any more than it has. The Chinese are able to advance with much more ease than before due to the increase in fighting capability - currently they are fighting (sweeping) something like Philippine/Taiwanese/Japanese/etc. forces mixed with U.S. and/or Australian SF support. Eventually they reach U.S. held territory or military interests (Wake Island?) and say: "Ours!" ... a final show down between the U.S. 7th ID and Chinese Naval Forces occurs amd WW3 truly begins... then we have a follow up with a new DLC: 2035'd U.S. Marines

Granted, this is Wikipedia, but you say Iran and Israel would never work together? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_industry_of_Iran

"In 1977, the Iranian Defense Industries Organization began to work on missiles jointly with Israel in Project Flower and requested a joint missile development program with the United States which was rejected.[7] In 1979, the country took the first step into manufacturing by reverse engineering Soviet RPG-7, BM21, and SA-7 missiles."

EDIT: Nevermind, it was before the Shah had died, before the Islamic revolution.

ArmA 3 happy and sad at the same time. The good news is that BIStudio technology is advancing, but sad that the new version of the game moves away from the concept of military simulator towards the fantastic world.

OFP and ArmA series has created a community of fans of realistic games. Now we are offered something different. With the release of ArmA 3 project will lose its uniqueness.

VBS project can be considered successful implementation of military simulator, but the VBS is not available on the open market.

Carrier Command is sufficient to implement the fantasy world.

Perhaps our community will have to support the concept of military simulator creating mods and add-ons.

Being near future doesn't make it fantasy.

Please explain how the world in OFP was realistic.

This has been talked about and refuted so often in this thread and others. I´m not going to repeat what was said, I´m tired of it. Suffice it to say, the near future setting will not detract in any way from the core gameplay and features, which define the realism of the engine.

"Moving away from the concept of the military simulator"? Puh-lease, to this day my most "only in Arma" experience was Road Rage by Celery! :D
