Max island size is not 12.8 km x 12.8km

Recommended Posts

Yep quote from natosoldier.com

"The legend strikes again!

A-Lone-Wolf, creator of P3D2OBJ proggy and one of the pioneers in OFP editing field reports, that he did some tests and it appears not only 12.8 x 12.8km (256x256 matrix) worlds are supported!

In fact he did some tests with the following sizes:

- 25.6 x 25.6 km (512x512 matrix)

- 51.2 x 51.2 km (1024x1024 matrix)

Something is telling me, that next WRPEdit version will have mulit-size island support...

I also belive that the new Resistance island is going to be bigger than 12,8 x 12,8 km, as BiS stated in some of their public interviews that this new island is a "BIG" one!"

the only problem is that the system cant say the cordinats.. sound and text... but i guess that the will arange for that in res tounge.gif

Well actually it can, i've got some coordinates like Tk45 when flying away from an island wink.gif.

Well I had a thought

I AM NOT WALKING IT sad.gif

Hey if we can get 1024 x 1024 50m squares then it will take months to do a good terrain, but why not.... smile.gif

It will mean greater use of heli-bourne assets and even allow for island to island combat with boats, airpower and grunts..

Also will require machines with a bit more grunt than mine I think.

Well, if this is infact true I am one happy camper. But beind a cynical prick, I will wait for hands on evidence of this (I.E I actually get the option of making 1024x1024 terrain)

Now I am not dis-respecting A-Lone-Wolf, I simply want to know how the heck he accomplished this.

Hey I completely believe that, cause i know that a-lone-wolf got pretty far with wrp format, even further than OFP Internals wink.gif

I know that, it's just that I want to see how he accomplished this. And hopefully the resulting island =)

You never know, with a huge island, there might actually be a use for planes and jets wow.gif

Now, I just want to say something about the island size in Resistance:

BIS has declared that the new island will be 100 square kilometers. That doesn't mean a map with 100 kilometer sides.

Actually, 100km^2 is smaller than the existing maps.

So I don't think we will be seeing a 1024x1024 map in Resistance...

EDIT:

@GFX707:

I still don't think that large airplanes have a place in OFP. I never used the argument of small islands, I was simply pointing at gameplay issues. Such as you can only have so many troops at the same time. Manouverability of the aircrafts and so on.

yes but i think resistance's actual island is 100^2 km, not just the map area

I dont think it lags at all, i think it should run fine on a 700 Mhz computer smile.gif

Trees and houses , road shouldnt lag it and runways either

I hope I will not disappoint you too much. While Resistance island will be slightly larger than original island, it is still 12.8 km x 12.8 km sized map - and the island area is not 100^2 km, but 100 km^2 (100 square kilometers).

And yes, OFP can handle larger terrains grids than 256x256. There is partiall support for this since 1.46 and it will be fully supported in Resistance. One warning has to follow: using largers islands may be very memory demanding. Minimal memory requirements for various islands size follow (all islands are considered empty, with no objects):

256 x 256 -- 4 MB

512 x 512 -- 16 MB

1024 x1024 -- 63 MB

Even though OFP allways have been very adaptive to usermade Addons... BIS keeps surpricing me...

I think its awesome that they thought about it and incoorparate new things into the game....

Nice job BIS.

jesus!

BIS, stop surprising us! biggrin.gif

great job BIS, once again, you showed why OFP rules. keep up the great job!

and since we can have bigger zie maps, anyone thinking what i'm thinking?

yes...the whole globe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

of course, reducing the size to half or quarter would be nice.. smile.gif

Bigger islands sound great but heres an alternative question.

If a normal island in 12.8km has 256x50m elevation points across can we have say 1024x12.5m elevation points.

Thus not bigger but with finer elevation data.

Is this possible??

If so then it opens a very very big door to those wanting dykes, sunken roads etc........

One of the officially published enhancements in resistance is that the landscape has twice the resolution of the original islands. That must mean: 12.8 km in 512x25m

So i would think that your idea of making a 1024x12.5m wouldn't be that far out. I do see the limitation that is posed by the amount of RAM used. The amount of RAM used as indicated by Suma must be the same for an island of higher resolution but of the same size:

12.8 km in 128x50m = 4 MB

12.8 km in 512x25m = 16 MB

12.8 km in 1024x12.5m = 63 MB

To Suma - is this true or did I miss something?

The problem arises when you go to the next step. If the neded amount of RAM, as it looks, develops as a function of x^2 then there would be some reason to assume that the map using 2048x2048 squares woul use approximately 256MB RAM. I remeber reading somewhere else, that the engine cannot utilize more than 256 MB RAM. If that limit still persist then, once the map was loaded, there wouldn't be any space left for all the other information needed by the game.

Suma - Is this a true assumption and do that limit still exist?

More generally i would like to know how well the engine performs on larger mapsizes and the limitations on the mapsize. Would it be possible to drop resolution to 100m and in that way make a 102,4km * 102,4km map possible?

Grid resolution can be changed. OFPInternals did it a while back with some info sent in by a fella going by the name of ArticPaw. However tests we tried never allowed us to change map sizes but that was before 1.46 ...

If the original islands are 256x256 and 1024x1024 is supported, then could it be possible to wrap all the 4 original islands into a 1 big map with 4 islands? The quality would be great, and it wouldn't be a big job(?).
