Let me just say this; Arma II is probably much more popular in Europe than North America...

Despite of the fact that the game contains US soldiers and US campaing mostly :)

Traditional advertisement isn't cheap.

And I suspect arma may need an honest marketing strategy - since hype-style advertising has a way with kicking you right back if it's not a product that absolutely everyone wants.

I suspect they'd probably be better off making a "make a youtube video" community contest, as user made content is typically more honest.

The part about not being cheap is dead on, think about the inside cover of a magazine, infact lets use PC Gamer for this.

A full page advert for one issue in PC Gamer (US) costs $14,289, now thats not garunteed to be in the first half of the magazine so it will end up in the back half where people tend to pay less attention to ads.

To get this on the inside front cover its an extra 45% so bringing the total to $20,719.05.

Putting a promo video onto the demo disc you get with the magazine is another $10,000, actually having a demo on the disc costs $20,000.

So you could see how the cost for BIS could easily mount up, its probably something they just feel they can do without. A heavy ad campaign that is.

I know lol, the UK Version has the whole back page covered with Op:A, so clearly BIS are advertising, I think the point to be taken from what I wrote was that what might be considered a marketing campaign (like dragon rising or MW2) is just completely out of BIS price range and that thecost of ads does rack up quickly.

If BIS can manage to stay afloat with no advertising grand scheme then I say let them keep on doing. What if they start pouring huge money into huge advertisements and then they start losing profit from it.Many people will just not like Arma2's gamestyle and so word of mouth and sites that give mediocre reviews will negate any advertising done.If they can manage to keep us players alive and hooked with little advertising then....

Hire some programmers who actually care about optomizing the game instead and then I'll be impressed.

Every publisher company out their has a huge ass marketing team and the games they make are absolute crap, make sure your product works properly before you try and sell it.

Yay, even more uninformed nonsense.

Check out the latest beta patches, where the devs have included improved multithreading support and - most recently - are adding support for more RAM and better file caching, resulting in both improved performance and visuals.

Nah, you see, the game doesn't work well for him, therefore it doesn't work for everyone else. It's quite clearly the truth, there's no doubt about it. ;)

I've seen them all and have them on my channel.

The majority of the review videos are 4:3 ratio, heavily compressed Standard Definition.

BIS should tap the skills of the fan video makers before release. Give them preview copies and maybe free copies of AO

the official videos are great but in comparison to what the fans pump out they're pretty bland.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo videos are pretty much dominating Youtube and Gametrailers.

to somewhat of a degree I agree with you, richie and Dyslexia should get a copy so they can pump out some nice ingame footage on their fancy rigs and demo it for us until release.

that TrackIR video Dyslexia did sell alot of people on buying A2, aswell as Richiespeed.

would be a smart thing for BIS to do in the future with their products.

@Lethn

Suma has been hard at work everyday to work on bugs thats his Job he doesnt get to sit around sipping koolaid and watching AAN all day.

ever heard of beta patches? Soon we will have the ability to use more RAM thats a huge improvement right there.

Just wonder when BIS are updating their own OA website with more infos about factions, weaponery, vehicles, characters etc? This is much easier+faster than making a hollywoodish trailer/teaser for impatient people. :)

Hopefully things will get moving in marketing terms. Release is in a week and I'm afraid that with this pace couple of countries will miss the release date...

YouTube vids boosted Arma 2 sales, no doubt about it - coupled with BIS TOD (time of day) choice, great textures, foliage & forests, made for some realistic looking environment that had everyone go: :O

People want to see multiplayer in action, once the novelty wears off. Warfare 2 or some other varieties of the mod are needed for there to be a sustained population.

I never thought my laptop could run Arma 2 at high settings (since I refuse to lower them) and Frapsed a few videos, now look where it's getting me - playing Warfare ACE with custom Particles mod at High settings @ 720p with Fraps running, recording Full-Size res vids (3.9gb per 3-4min :D). It is worth it? You be the judge. :)

P.S. I have loads of people with laptops that have similar configs or the exact model that I have, that are PM'ing me and following my vids in anticipation of Arma (2?) AO.

Imo the biggest marketing booster is the scenerio depicted in a game. In simulators ppl want realistic sceneries with realistic campaigns.

I know many old OPFers who are ready to jump in on the train with ArmA2:OA simply because the guerilla conflicts in an Afghanistan-like country reminds them of the news footages going on recently. If you watched one of those 'Ross Kemp in Afghanistan' DVDs, you will want to play ArmA2:OA.

Sahrani / Chernarus weren't realistic enough, its that simply. BIS made a smart choice using Takistan.
