Red Orchestra has it's advantages and it's disadvantages, I've played the game for a while and I'm fairly impressed with it but there's nothing that quenches the thirst for a true simulator like what BIS titles offer.

I'd prefer Heeresgruppe Mitte before it was renamed to Nord in Jan.1945, particularly from years 1943-1945.

I wonder why noone did a campaign about the Monte Cassino yet, even though it provides a spectacular setting for story telling. And that even with in historical context. All you would need is one map with a tremendous hill and a nearby village. Also, if playing a german soldier it a high kill ratio wouldnt be so absurd given the territorial advantages.

It'd be a shame to waste the idea given that the current atmosphere in the game is more than fitting.

I have exactly the same thought every time I play Arma2 online.

Eastern front gets my vote, worlds were won and lost.

East or West front, it doesn't matter really to me, any WW2 scenario would be interesting thing personally. Only important thing is to have nice addons or Mods for such WW2 battles in ARMA2.

I agree there defianently need to avoid "Battle of Endor"-syndrome on this. Small village fights or skirmishes in country side, no Stalingrad, Moscow, Oder-river, Berlin etc. stuff, those we can play in CODs

Yes, maybe a village encounter fight would be enough for game. I think no FPS games could give a full scene for the battles such as Moscow, Stalingrad or Oder-river. But a village fight could be taken as a part of such large campaign. You know, actually any large battle in real is consisted of lots of small fights. Starlinggrad was not done just by one fight.

In addition, I think we at least could have platoons or half company fighting scale in ARMA2 and also include some additional armor units. In ARMA1 it could reach one company of troops on each side. Now in ARMA2, it would be around half of the units in the same PC settings. But in game, you only would play a soldier so such scale should be enough and may be useless to have a very large amount of units if you were killed from the beginning in game.

So...don't think ArmA2 needs a WWII mod because it can't offer more than what's already out there...:j:

I was part of the RO modteam back then and I can assure you the RO-engine and the arma-engine are miles apart.

These differences are so huge, it's like comparing two totaly different games.

Right now our modteam has joined the I44 team to make sure that all tanks produced are as close to reality as possible within the current game-limits. I highly doubt that even the new Unreal3 engine can achieve what has been done on the arma2 engine allready.

So yes I would like to see a ww2 eastern front mod. We might even provide some tanks for that in the future, who knows.

Monk.

Note, the T34/85 is already in game so a simple reskin will save you a HELL of a lot of time

I would like see it, for sure, with the period from summer '43-summer '44 being my main are of interest. Of course, maps, equipment, troops, and any other mods from anywhere from June 22, '41 to the fall of Berlin would be fine by me.

As far as realism goes, I am actually pretty flexible on that. While I like and encourage realism, I would also not mind playing out the hundreds of Tiger tanks at Prokhorovka of legend as well as the mere handful of Tigers at Prokhorovka of reality, and generally have a simulation of a Leo Kessler or Sven Hassel novel as much as a simulation of what actually happened.

As far as WW2 being done to death goes...well, the Eastern front less so than the Western theatre, and even less so in a game that allows for command of large units and first person play at the same time.

This is why I always buy sim games over flavor of the moment games like CoD....MoH...CoH. People complain about WW2 being overdone because they play games that are more like movies than war simulators....you can only watch the same movie so many times befor you wanna puke.

When a game makes me wanna crawl into my own arse to escape the bullets, I know I'm playing a good game :) And OFP cwc-res/ARMA/ARMA2 has always filled that need.. Unlike a CoD where I see a buddy get mowed down only to stand up and shake it off.

A WW2 mod in ARMA2 will be welcomed with open arms. For me , you don't even need a full mod ,just some addons/tanks and such is good enough...not all of us need a full campaign and units with the correct insignias.

Some of us can make our own fun, we just need to toy's to do it.:D

A WW2 mod would fit perfectly in Arma2, there is no hi-tec weapon systems such as flir, laser range finders, guided missiles, nvg and all that stuff to simulate. Just basic eyeball and ironsights. It would be cool if you could disable the stabilized gun in tanks as well so you have to stop to shoot properly.

Yup im all for a WW2 mod eastern or/and western theater :bounce3:

WW2 style does not excite me nor inspires me very much.

Though every addon is a good addon.

43~44 eastern front would be, by far, my preferred escenario for any military game (including flight sims). I fully support this idea for ArmA2, while I don't know how good is A2 modeling correct ballistics, armour plates, armour penetration and damages required for a reallistic tank battle.

Yes !!!

That's where the outcome of the war was settled.

Mud/Winter and harsh conditions, please.

Many civilian, house and object models can be used from the original game as well.

Not too many new models needed in my opinion, mainly infantry, armor and maybe planes.

Would be great with a German side conversation system, if possible.

Also, putting a lot of effort into the terrain/island would be the key to success, I think.

Nothing beats amazing terrain, like Chernarus for example.

jap,

43~44 , is also my favourite time window of the eastern front.

and yes, chernarus is the perfect landscape for a ww2 eastern scenario.

I really hope that there will come something...:o

I am definitely all for this, especially the Eastern Front scenario. I too am bored of WW2 games, but I think the Arma 2 engine would really bring this to life and give us a whole new side that most games cannot. Imagine starting out as a lowly tank commander and slowly working your way up as the war goes on around you.

I think modelling an armour penetration system is possible. At least comparable to RO if not SB. Not saying it's undemanding of the engine, just possible.

WW2 scenarios are my primary interest, modern warfare and the high tech platforms aren't my thing. I'm like Odjob, I'm an iron sights kind of guy. :D I think ARMA2 and a decent WW2 mod would keep me happy for a loooong time.

Is Bigfoot still around? He made a massive Russian and Hungarian pack for OFP back in the day. That pack had the most armor,guns,troops,cars, I've seen come from 1 person.

OFP had tons of WW2 stuff that I think would look just fine in ARMA2.....some could use a texture update here and there....but the majortity would work for us WW2 starved gamers.....must start tracking down the addon makers!

My OFP WW2 folder has 1.15 gigs with 2 extra folders in reserve for addons to big for the main.

If theres gonna be a ww2 eastern front mod, be sure to have the possible dates go all the way back to, say, 1939 or 1940, as that's when ww2 actually started, as the re-arming of germany doesn't count.

BTW, if you remove the scope on the CZ550 (the huntingrifle) it will make a great basic bolt-action weapon.

Already have an Eastern Front mod.

A unit that i was a part of called the Großdeutschland, is a historcal Realism Unit. 1.SS 'Leibstandarte' which is the same guys play red orchestra and Darkest Hour.

The Großdeutschland part of the unit plays Arma2, armed assault when i was with them. In teh Arma2 unit they have a guy that i have known since the OFP days and Im sure that some of you might recognize his name, he did alot of modding for Liberation mod 1941-45 for OFP his name is TRoc.

He has created a WW2 Ostfront mod for the GD unit, as well as one for the armed assault which we dont play any more.

The mod is private for now, not sure if Troc will let the mod go beyond the unit, im telling you guys this because i have this mod, and no i will not give u a link, as TRoc has made the mod and it his mod, you will have to contact him if you want the mod.

The mod is a WIP or work in progress, the guys in the GD unit know their WW2 German history very well, and take it rather seriously if something in the game were not historically accurate, i should know as I made missions for the GD unit back when it was playin armed assault.

I can tell you what the mod does have currently whats been completed and what is being worked on atm.

What the mod does have is:

Germany

German armored captured

* German captured t34m42 1 and 2

German static

* Pak 40

* other statics under the warfare buildings as well

German Armored

* Panther ausf A (7 variations)

* Pz4 H (4 variations)

* Pz4 J (4 variations)

* Tiger (6 variations)

* Tiger 1 (1 variation)

Axis Panzer crew

* Heer crew(4 crew)

* SS crew (4 crew)

Axis half tracks

* Sdkf 251 D (5 variations)

Axis Soldiers

* 13 Heer Types soldier -k98,mp40,mp44,marksmen,mg42 , ect.,

* 24 Waffen SS type soldiers

Under groups in the editor

* 6 types of squads to pick from Heer, and SS units

===================================================

Russia

Russian Armored

* Kv1 (2 variations)

* T34/85 (6 variations)

* T34m42 (8 variations)

* Tank crew-x2

Russian Soldiers

* 24 types of Russian soldiers

Under groups in the editor

* 3 types of squads to pick from russian units

============================================

Yes the axis is worked on more as the unit represents a German unit.

Currently the Stug variations are being worked on, the models are almost complete.

. a new sound overall for the mod.

======================================

what the mod is:

it is a compilation of WW2 addons created together, and can be found in the editor.

what the mod is not:

not a mod per se as it does not have a menu, or missions, or anything that a full mod would have, that is up to TRoc to decide and where the unit wishes to go with the mod.

All that i know is with the units knowledge they are working on varies aspects of tanks that have things that the game dont have, attention to historical detail is their upmost prioirty, correct uniforms, corrct, structure, and decals on teh tanks and soldiers.

========================================================

I do not speak on behalf of TRoc.

What the GD unit is looking for is more panzercrewman, and members that can create missions.

If you are interested in historical realism and can make missions for Arma2, and would like to get your hands on this mod and possibly help further the mod out then contact Wolff at this website address:

1.SS 'Leibstandarte' / Großdeutschland

http://www.panzergrenadiers.com/forum/index.php

=========================================================

Me? Who am I, I am a Unit leader for the Historical Realism Unit Grenadier-Regiment 187, known as the 187th. est March 2007

I lead a unit in the pc game Red Orchestra and the mod known as Darkest Hour all WW2.

Red Orchestra is the Ostfront or Eastern front part of the war.

Darkest Hour Mod is the western front 1944 part of the war

we have a couple of videos on Red orchestra if you have never heard of it. but the game is all realistic ballistics, and iron sites, look i up, RO2 is in the works!

1.SS 'Leibstandarte' / Großdeutschland

are allies with us for Red Orchestra/Darkest Hour

I'd really like to see the stuff that was done in Liberation 1941-45 be done for Arma II. I was extremly impressed with that mod back when it came out for ofp.

It had alot of vehicles and weaponry that you didn't see in other games or mods. The T-26 and BT-7's for example.

In short I've seen WWII games and mods since forever, but good mods and games are different then just WWII mods and games. So in short I'd like to see WWII mods that are good because now everything seems to be taking a modern warfare turn and personally that's going to start boring me at some point.
