WIP British 4 Rifle Soldiers

Recommended Posts

Considering how much stuff you've taken on to build Stalker you deserve some sort of medal, or at least a cookie. Maybe a medal that is also a cookie. Can't wait to see the temperate kit Rifles troops in action (I'm sure the other stuff will be great too, but I just needs me some proper British squaddies :D ).

I agree. And as such, on behalf of all of us here in the ArmA community, I would like to present to you--Stalker--on the 29th of October in the year 2009 this cookie medal of appreciation:

Stalker_cookiemedal.png

Let's all stand and give the man a standing ovation for all of his hard work, skills and valiant determination to give us the best!

Just know, stalker, that there is a naked mime hiding under a bed out there that is crying a proud tear for you today, buddy.

Bravo my friend.........bravo. :thumbs-up:

Instead of some super uninteresting acceptance speech for my cookie medal, I'll give you all a picture :)

@Betsalel, feel a bit sorry for the mime really....

Thanks for the wireframe. I was refurring to the ris block versus ris bar.

wireframe.jpg

Looks more or less individual blocks but not 100% free. Anyway, still room for optimizing, but i leave that to you.

Keep it up.

Cheers mate, glad you think its looking ok, in terms of LODs and optimizing, for the 3rd person views is it best to not have the indiviual blocks and just have a flat surface and use the shaders to simulate depth for the rail blocks?

Hope that makes sense.

Why is your rails triangulated? not doing that would cut half the faces and your don't seem to use it on the rest of the model?

That ACOG version does look too high seems like 2-2,5 times the height of the rail over the receiver would be the correct height.

Ah, in my opinion at least the highest res lod (so 3rd person) you should have an true 3D ris. It is bloody 2009, nearly 2010 folks :( . From artist point of view i would even dare to say the view pilot lod and highest detail res lod should be nearly identical in detail. The only difference i do in my latest models is have the smaller details in a less segmented shape. Personally i refuse to model scopes for example in less then a 64 segment based shape, for view pilot that is.

Yup you quickly end up with a 15-19k tris weapon model. But again that is a personal view. Been modelling long enough for this game...there comes a day you simply can't stand lower poly stuff anymore. Since there aren't any mayor feature improvents on weapons the last few years (apart from hand animation...) one gets tired of doing the same stuff. I agree a lot can be 'faked' with normal maps, but in the end it stays faked. I again refuse to make something in normal map shape if it siloute in RL should be visible and covering other parts, meaning external items.

*We want hard-coded supported animations on weapons.

Instead of feeling a bit sorry for him, how about me--it's my bed he's camping out under. <grumbles>

Hehe, anyways the pic looks killer mate. Not sure if my PM reached ya from the other day, but hoping things have improved at your end, bud. :D Keep up the great work!

It doesn't mather if the model (in current shape) is triangled or not. In the end, one needs to think in tris and point count (although the point count in O2 is fake aswell -> hard edges aren't calulated). Faces (quad) is simply a fake and easy way to work with your model.

But there are indeed a few thing on the ris plates that can be optimized....that and a few other things.

Yeah thats one of the points I need to address, the rails wont be triangulated by release. They are originally from Project Reality SA80 AG36 so whoever modelled them originally made them like that.

Will fiddle around with the ACOG height a bit although it does seem pretty high up on the SA80 in the pics i have seen, havent really found a great side on image of it for comparison though.

EDIT: @DaSquade, yeah agree with you on not liking to fake things with normal maps, cheers for all the help :) Will keep it 3D for the 1st LOD like you suggested.

Oh and Betsalel, check the old PMs

If you ment a real life side on photo of it i got one for you...

Thanks for the image, was looking for the ACOG mount onto the STANAG rail though just to se how high it is, most of the images I have found are at too much of an angle to really get a good idea.

Will be lowering it either way though because I felt it was too high.

The ACOG mount is built so that the ocular lens (eyepiece) is at the same height as it was on the SUSAT. This is to ensure that shooters use the same cheek weld as they were using before.

The eyepiece of the ACOG is slightly further forward to that of the SUSAT so that eye-relief is correct for the new optics: hence the weird cantilever design of the mount.

Ed:- At least that's what I was told by one of the armorers where I work, when I commented that the mount looked shit

so looking forward to your upcoming release, still use Arma a lot and your British infantry, was wondering if the view used through the susat in your original British Infantry will be the same for your Arma2 weapons, love that view, gives the feel of imersion a bit more i think, up close and personnel like, anyway cant wait, thanks Stalkergb.

Cheers for the info da12th, will be a big help :)

On a slightly different note, finally have fixed the racist face issue where all the black guys had their eyes closed :)

Have cut the 4 models out that I didn't want and now just have the sniper and maybe one more to do for the temperate units.

can we expect them this weekend i hope so also i know it along shot but could you please put

120px-Yorkshire_Regiment_Tactical_Recognition_Flash.jpg

(Tactical Recognition Flash (TRF)

A Tactical recognition flash is a coloured patch worn on the arm of combat clothing

as i server 15th years in my regiment "was know as 1st Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding))

hope you can do this for me onces you got more time

or a set of these from diff regiment so we only need to add to our players initialization string

Putting a flash on the units would force them from being the generic British infantry that would be more useful, in my opinion.

i am on about if he could set it so we could add the flash thur the players initialization string instead of going thur a xml logo that all m8

It could be made as a hiddenSelection on the model and initialized through the unit's Init line in editor.

initially it will be just the generic Brit units but in time I might add some fancy was of people changing it, in the mean time (as long as i give permission) people can retexture it for their clans.

Unlikely to see a release this weekend, for starters I'm not going to get much or any time over the next day or two. And even though the models might be finished once i have done the sniper there is still quite a bit to sort like the desert units have more of the new shaders applied to them so i'll need to copy that across onto the temperate ones.

Either way, shouldn't be too long.

Oh and there is also the weapons that need to be done before I can release :)

I just saw the L85 with the rail platform, it looks fooking mega.

I presume you won't be editing it from now?
