Vista Troubleshooting Thread: The one and only

Recommended Posts

ok, i did have 4GB ram an resorted to using msconfig fix and dropping to 3, however 1.15beta fixed it so i just played beta with 4gb ram, now im runing 8GB of all matching corsair dominator 1066mhz, and neither the 1.14 or 1.15 version will run sad_o.gif will beta only work up to 4gb max? i have a friend who plays with 12gb  on his new alien ware machine both versions no problem. if i want to use the maxmem method how do i do it? ive searched but not found anything to talk me through all steps, do u add maxmem=3072 in exe or do u have to edit config files? i dont wanna keep booting my pc in 3 gb just to have to re adjust and boot with max ram 2 play other stuff

do you use more than 2g anyways? If you do then you will reboot when you need the RAM( only VM or encoding..PS?)Rt now its less than 4g for ATi 4870s in 64bit OS... A fix is coming ,maybe,   its been said.

Your bud's 12g rig is not like your 8g rig... and never will, whats his gfxcard?

I'm having problems running arma now that I've bought 4 more gig of ram even though I've updated to 1.15 beta.

System:

Intel core2 E8500 3.16Gh

8 Gig DDR2 ram

Ati 4870x2 2 gig

Vista Ultimate 64bit

gigabyte 6-quad/ S-series mobo

While Arma ran fine on this system and the 1.15 patch before I put the new ram in, it now takes up to 2 mins of black screen to get to the main menu screen.

When the main screen comes up everything is blocky and in untextured grey tones, running at about 1 fps. As an added bonus all the menu buttons and windows are blacked out So all I can see of them is black squares and rectangles with no writing.

Any help appreciated.

Thankee.

It's the 3 or 4 gig limit for RAM thats causing your problems. BIS still havent got a solution to this problem.

Shame really.

Set your RAM limit to 3 or 4 Gig and retry.

It will work but I haven't been that impressed with Arma on Vista versus XP (and I dual boot both OSs)

*Sigh*. I thought it'd be something along those lines. I tried a bunch of the solutions that had been posted earlier with no joy.

I just posted hoping against hope. Oh well back to 4 gig, pity about the other games that perform better with the extra ram.

Well I took the 1.15 patch for a test-drive and after about 20 minutes of play, the game just shuts off. A window pops up telling me ArmA has stopped working... yadda yadda.  This never used to happen to me before so I guess it's something in this new patch.

Running Vista64(sp1).  I'm going to try some black voodoo magic on it and see if it helps.   crazy_o.gif

--------

UPDATE

--------

I shut off Vista Aero and the game's running perfect! Don't know if that did it(?) Better memory handling indeed though! Can't wait for ArmA 2!

use -window start flag. it works with that.

i'm still wonder if 8GB are used by game... could be a great improvement.

morning guy's. just a note to say "thanks". i decided to come on this forum to see if i could fix the issues i have been having with ARMA and QUEENS GAMBIT. not only have i found you all have the same problem; but it's unfixable for someone like me, (a complete technophobe). i just paid 3.5k (whats that about $5k usd) for a dream machine then went and bought every decent FPS game you can think of COD4... CRYSIS+WARHEAD...FAR CRY2.. ARMA ETC ETC ETC. I am having the same probs, initial screen is blanked out. tried the reinstall so many times, re-updated the graphics cards so many times, all the usual noob things..no joy. then i come on here and see all this tech stuff. ..so..ARMA and QUEENS GAMBIT goes in the drawer till one of you guys figures it out or BI comes up with a fix. cheers guys. now i know i'm not the only one gutted that i cant play these superb games.

all the best

The price of your Pc means nothing for assistance, chuck up your stats and we will see. Go back a couple of pages and see the x64 tricks or Patch up to 1.15beta if your an ATI user.

thanks for the reply. yes i did take a look at all the posts. i see some are having success while others are not. then again..there is a lot of success then it all goes wrong again. i understand price means nothing; my point was: i expected it play everything for that kind of money, ( i know: i am nieve). ie i even play MOH WARCHEST and the original CALL OF DUTY on it with no problems. what i didnt expect was a huge FPS by a well known maker to fall on its arse.

as i mentioned; i am a complete noob; as far as getting into the programs are concerned and the last thing i want to do is start messing with stuff i know nothing about. dropping RAM and msconfig; all that stuff is way out of my league. and as much i enjoyed flashpoint on xp i dont want to start messing with my rig for the sake of 1 game no matter how good it is. to be honest it just scares the hell out me and i dont want to risk even the slightest chance i might do something bad and not know how to reverse it. if it was a beat up junk pc then i would not have so much hesitation.

vista 64 premium...quad core 6700...8gb corsair ram...3x500gb raid hard drive...3xnvidia 8800gtx 756 SLI....asus striker formula 2 motherboard with fully customisable AI SUITE.

4 big fans on the outside and some on the inside.

using FRAPS as a monitor i get an average of 85 frames per second on far cry 2 when its very busy rising to 117 when things calm down. thats maxing out on all settings and max resolution. COD4 is an average 80 frames per second again maxing out on everything.

thats the stats but as i know now they mean nothing as someone explained in the forum that different games do different things with memory.

regards

So what is your issue?

And your kit; "6700...8gb corsair ram...3x500gb raid hard drive...3xnvidia 8800gtx 756 SLI....asus striker formula 2" ,  is impressive and two to three years old, bar the MB.

Your running three gtx's in SLI? and your driver version for them is?

I know this is a VISTA thread.  I do not mean to hijack, but I'm running Windows 7 64 bit beta build 7000.  ARMA plays very well without having to resort to the -maxmem tweak or removing RAM via msconfig.

I'm running a Q6600, 4x1G DDR3 RAM, a GTX 260 and a 8800 GT for PhysX (I doubt it's used with ARMA).  I patched up to 1.15 beta and all is well.  Reading the BIS WIKI, 1.15 had some fixes for 4G RAM.  Looks like BIS got it right with 1.15 beta patch.

Overall ARMA performance is on par with XP 32 bit.  I was surprised to see how well ARMA performs with the beta OS given how it runs with VISTA 32 bit & 64 bit.

Same here.

Windows 7 x64 (which is essentially the Vista kernel with bells on) working fine, EXCEPT I can't get Track IR to work.

Having come directly from XP is there anything in Vista you have to do to get Track IR to play ball? It works in other games, and is set up in the control configuration, so I don't know what else to try.

P

edit: Worked out what was wrong. I needed to run ArmA as Administrator as well icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi all, wondered if anyone else is having the problem of running Vista 64 system, 8GB RAM and trying the Beta patch work around but still getting the black screen at start up?

Have a drivers updated eg card/SP1 etc but I start the specific Beta patch but no joy, specs are below re card/computer.

I know it works because I have the "reduce the system RAM to 3GB work around and game loads - I just wondered how to not have to do this with the Beta patch?

hi, i posted a couple of weeks ago with the same problem and decided to put the whole lot in the drawer untill a fix came along...then i thought one more go. uninstalled arma and queens gambit, went into the folders and everything that may contain trace of the games and deleted whatever i found including my anti virus software, and all vista security. if it was related to arma in any way it got deleted.. i then installed arma on its own..but i didnt attempt to play it...then went on to the arma armed assualt site and used to the gamers hell mirror to download the pathes one after the other. still not attempting to play the game at all. finished downloading all three patches. shut down and restarted (not just a restart) gave it 5 mins to properly warm up, crossed everything and preyed a little....bingo!!!! fully working; no hitches. sweet, smooth, perfect. then installed queens gambit..perfect again...running vista 64 prem 8gb of corsair ram with 3 8800gtx 756mb cards in sli on an asus striker 2 formula mother board...i have not got a clue what i did right. i did not want to tinker with anything as i am such a techno phobe its untrue. but there you go, running fine on 8gb of ram with vista at 75fps. hope this helps. it can be done but i honestly dont know how i did it. my cards were completely up to date...i cleansed the system of arma and BI then updated my cards...then installed then patched... I DID NOT USE THE BETA..other than that i figure i just got very lucky.

"Video Processor ATI Radeon Graphics Processor "

if you have a 4780, then yes more than 4GB will Black screen..Current solutions are to use the -window command, or limit your system ram thru MSCONFIG, or just remove some . If you Crossfire then the -window command will break that..., i just use MSCONIFG , BOOT ,Advance options , Maxmen, 3072.....

Its a known issue, hopefully Suma will have it in the 1.15 final or what ever # it will be.

I have been having troubble with playing editor maps on mp. The only reason i bring it up here is i think its a Vista problem. It did not happen to my before Vista, and when i am not on the mp server and a friend of mine hosts the server the problem goes away, but as soon as i join the server crashes. When i do get in and get it to work on a rare instance if the server needs to be reset everything become locked or is there but the game does not think it there because you cant interact with them. Including troops. We have the same mission files and MP mission file and the same Addons. Again i never had a problem with XP but just happened when i went to Vista 64 bit. I am this close to going back to XP if i dont find a solution soon. I hope you guys have heard this one and can help. Thanks for the time.

I don't know where people got this idea that 4GB is bad. I've been running ArmA in Win7 64bit with 4GB of RAM and have noticed absolutely nor problems. I doubt its the RAM causing your problems.

Im using vista x64 with 6 gigabyte triple channel and I've got no problems.

I'm using a nvidia GTX280 videocard.

So 4GB isn't always bad.

Im running arma 1.15

It's not bad for nvidia cards but ati users seem to have problems when they go over 4GB.

(I have 6GB (for VMwares mostly) + 8800GTX and have no big problems)

Vista 64-bit

Core 2 Quad Q9950

ATI HD4870 X2

8 GB RAM.

I can only run ArmA in windowed. In fullscreen everything is just black and you can't see anything (even with the 1.15 beta patch).

What kind of settings should I be able to run in 1920 x 1200? I have to put everything at Normal with low AA. Even then I don't get a solid 30 FPS which is weird, as this computer can run Crysis on the highest settings...

Yeah ARMA as it is now is really borked for 4870's. Not the end of the world ,except you have a 4870X2, and in window mode you only get one GPU/NO CF....To run fullscreen; you will have to Boot your computer with less than 4GB.... And to get your 4870x2 to even use both GPUs in fullscreen you HAVE to rename the ARMA.exe. I use Crysis.exe as my rename. After all that my 4870x2's run ARMA great. At all high or veryhigh with good VD (3500+) except in the areas that tank everybody...Oh, Vsync is always on right now with the current drivers and Vista. Lets hope a Patch comes out soon so we can use our RAM and cards at the same time... To set your RAM to 4GB or less, go into your RUN/msconfig/Boot/advanced options/Maxmemory 3072 or 4096.....

edit: 1.16b fixes the ram issue, and renaming the "arma.exe" to "arma2.exe" is a big improvement for CF/CFX
