Movies I already know: Black Hawk Down - THE modern war movie :P Hurt Locker Lone Survivor Act Of Valor Greenzone Generation Kill Korengal Restrepo Zero Dark Thirty Armadillo Jarhead The Battle Of Haditha Three Kings (Somewhat...) Redacted Over There (sucks imho) Is there any modern war movie I missed and which is worth watching?
oxmox 73 Posted July 8, 2016 Is there any modern war movie I missed and which is worth watching? No Man´s Land (2001 - Bosnia War) Turtles Can Fly (2004 - Iraq, seen through children´s eyes)
St. Jimmy 272 Posted July 9, 2016 Tuntematon Sotilas naturally hits the heart the most for me. 1955 version is IMO bit better because of the more humor acting. 1985 version is bit more serious but the acting is lacking bit too much. They're ~3h long movies. There's new version coming in 2017 so interesting to see how good it will be.
Beagle 684 Posted July 9, 2016 "Грозовые ворота", english title "The Storm Gate" originally a miniseries recut into a movie.I prefer the series but the 4 part series is onyl available in russian. The plot is roughly around the battle for 776 in the second caucasus campaign. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Height_776
Tonci87 163 Posted July 9, 2016 You know, I think that there might be a lot of really good Soviet/Russian war movies. The only thing that puts me off is that they are mostly in russian, and/or are very much propaganda (not to say that western movies aren´t, I just don´t like when they overdo it)
mr burns 132 Posted July 9, 2016 White Tiger, not recommended for the movie itself, but those T-34 and SU-152 engine recordings should give anyone a tank-boner!
ProfTournesol 956 Posted July 9, 2016 White Tiger, not recommended for the movie itself, but those T-34 and SU-152 engine recordings should give anyone a tank-boner! I must say i enjoyed that movie quite a lot.
veles-zv 176 Posted July 9, 2016 Shit, I forgot Enemy at the gates... Sorry... Enemy at the gates is propaganda made by westerners to make the soviet union look evil... it has almost no historically reality besides for its setting... its the equivalent of duke nukem playing in rambo fighting the predator. enemy at the gates is a disgrace to war movies... i would go so far as calling it a drama movie then a war movie. ineptaphid 6413 Posted July 9, 2016 The longest day-1962 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Longest_Day_(film)#Plot It was the first proper war movie I saw-I watched it on TV with my mother when I was about 8. Spent the next few weeks crawling around our back garden in the dark with black soot on my face and a wooden stick for a rifle:D And Lone Suvivor-after reading the book, that movie really captured me a lot. There are not really any other modern war movies like it.
Beagle 684 Posted July 10, 2016 Another russian war drama, less action more featuring the desolation of the common russian soldier in the caucasus conflicts. You often just need minimal (GDR middle school) russian language knowledge to follow the plot. блокпоÑÑ‚ The movie really seems in plot and making la lot like a russian version of "Platoon" https://youtu.be/Y4ApkELcEng
Tonci87 163 Posted July 10, 2016 Germans can make some damn good war movies. Such as: The german Stalingrad movie from 1993 Das Boot (shame on you if you don´t know that movie) Both should be available in english
