Anti-Virus n AntiHack - Gamer Friendly ?

Hi all,

Got my new machine up and running and my Kaspersky pack just went out of date on my old machine .....

Not that I think Kaspersky was a problem, but I'd like to check whats around.

Now looking for a nice simple Security package that doesn't suck a huge amount of resouces to get the job done.

Before Kaspersky I was using Symantics IS and found it was nothing but a resource hog and a lock-up wizard ! Ditched it with 8 months still on my registration.

So .... any educated recommendations for a gamer friendly package ?

Free-AV or NOD32 do a good job for anti-virus.

If you don't want to use the standard Windows firewall (from XP SP2 and onwards it does a pretty good job), there's always Comodo or ZoneAlarm.

If you are concerned about resource use, it's almost always a better idea to use small, separate packages instead of a complete system.

I'd renew kapersky, as of all the anti virus programs I've owned its been the most reliable and thorough, to sometimes being down right anal about what it thinks could be a virus (which I guess is safer in the long run)

never rely on just one AV program though - windows defender is a good, free tool to download, as is adaware too - those two will quite happily clean up your pc of spyware and other crap thats accumulated.

trend micro house call is a free over the internet av checker - its not brilliant, and you have to pay it to clean your pc, but it does flag up and list anything suspicious for you, so you can then get to work making your other AV software cleaning it or manually deleting it.

I wouldn´t use ZoneAlarm. It´s too naggy and imo lags the comp.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and this is the numgber 1 firewall to me as it doesn´t nag for this and that all the time and is very reliable.

For single player I just unplug the network cable and turn off the anti-virus and firewall software...

Been using Kaspersky Int. Security for ages,now have KIS 6.0.2.621 and it works perfectly,its not a system hog and has the best antivir today,Anti-Hacker is great - it works silently and its very easy to configure rules as u wish.Updates every hour or so,fast threats update list aka Virus Watch...Maybe the price is a little higher but its worth (bought 2 year license for ~90$ ). Whom to trust on this field then Russians.

I use McAfee. I used to run Norton, but it has far too many "cute" designs that take up too many resources.

Well another good free option is Avast! ... but then again single AV can't protect You enough ...

I use AVG Free, its excellent, the only antivirus ive found which updates daily with small files and which has actually protected the computer...

Its also not a resource hog at all

I use Zonealarm as a firewall too as i like it and it doesnt hog TOO much resources. I'd definately reccomend AVG as a free antivirus.. most viruses are designed to circumvent the protection of Anti viruses such as Norton + McAffee.. they even got accused of creating viruses themselves to increase sales lol. Plus Norton + McAffee hog resources MASSIVELY and are loaded with crap.. so long as you're not a complete half-wit use something other than Norton or McAffee.. they aint that hard to use :P

Kaspersky is the best AV without a doubt. If youre cheap (like me) then use AVG, does the job and doesnt hog resources.

Ive always maintained though that the best way to avoid viruses is to avoid dodgy porno sites and spam

AVG is good, but after the nagging upgrade to 7.0 and the lack of free cross-platform capability I switched to ClamAV. It's just as effective, has all the hooks I need, and is quiet.

i use McAffee VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise 8.5.0i (lifelong signature, corporate edition), light enough for my needs and very effective, on the side i use Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot and SpywareBlaster which i run once a day"ish", i can honestly say ive never ever had a virus in all my online experience...yet

AVG and zonealarm do the job, are free and are so light that i dont have to shut down anything to game (online).

Dont underestimate them because they are free, havent caught a virus with these and AVG updates all the time .

Kaspersky FTW - I had trouble getting updates from AVG, seemed like their servers were always down. Either is good, however, I find.

Are you all paranoid?

I dont use anything at all except for the standard XP firewall, and i scan with adaware once in a while. Sometimes when i suspect i have downloaded something that could be a virus but i want to use it anyway i use panda activescan to check if its safe. Once a year i scan with a more proper virusscan (Which is always turned off, currently its uninstalled) but it never finds anything. I scan +-once a month with adaware which finds nothing but a few tracking cookies (which are harmless).

As long as you are not a complete retard who clicks on everything he sees and downloads everything that gets sent to him on MSN without looking at the filename first, or googles for 'wallpapers' and checks all the links, you should be fine...

Don't forget ClamWin. Ports over the very solid Clam-AV engine from Unix and puts a nice Windows interface on it.

I also use some of these + Spyware Blaster. And none of the AV programs can detect and/or remove all the known viruses, you can have ten of these programs and you're still vulnerable (yes ofpforum it's a paranoja but also the fact ), so really the best 'safe policy' is this:

you can improve your overall system performance and security by disabling some of the system services you never use Check this.
