Cooperative Campaign

I heard that you can experience the singleplayer story campaign with a friend in this game. Now this is extreamly exciting feature, but i have huge doubts that this will ever be playable performancewise.

So i would like to know if there have been any talk about what kind of connection and hardware this will be needing. Or if this feature will even be actually available in the end.

Games like STALKER already cancelled this feature on their product.

Why not? People make huuuge missions and play them co-operativley with 30 people (look at shactac) with little problems. And with improved netcode and game handling, I'm sure ArmA will be even better. I don't see why it would possibly be taken away.

The prequel to this game, Operation Flashpoint, handled co-op extremely well and is easily one of the best co-op games of all time. I believe the reason they are only allowing 2 player co-op in single player campaign missions is due to mission design constraints and not hardware or software constraints. Expect to see high player count co-op missions released by the community after it's release.

As MrZig said; there are already huge coop missions out there, making a coop version of the campaign is no big deal other than timewise.

I've seen missions with up to two battaltions of AI troops, plus about 10 human players, and it works.

That's with a 5 year old game...

Cooperative Campaign sounds like a lot of fun. I wonder how they would implement a second player, though?

Weve had >30 player coops that worked rather well. The plot-oriented scripting on the other hand would a huge pain in the ass.

coop campaign and coop in general is one of the things that makes me want to buy arma as soon as possible. smile_o.gif

even if you have a ping of sky high 400 you could play with others with less problems then a 4 v 4 pvp in American Army, and you could see all kinds of things there

with the almighty editor(scripts for those who creat missions by open up a notepad instead of the game itself), you could do almost anything in a mission, from normal(boring), to a realistic one and to a totally madness one, and i have some great time on those mission

ah BTW, getting out from a sucessful mission, alive, is a great moment to have

Thanks for the replies guys, sounds great! I hope 2mb/512kbs will indeed be enough for 2 players then.

I have the operation flashpoint and played it like 2 years when it was released, and couple times in a small LAN, but never on internet, so I quess i'm just beign a little pessimistic thats all.

More than enough. Based on OFP experience depending on the map (AI units and so on) you can host probably around 5-10 people with that.

I forgot about this feature. Hey Placebo, can you please confirm that this is still going to be in AA or has it been removed?

Bringing this thread back from the dead.

I had also heard about being able to play the campaign coop with 2 players. Did this get cut from the final game? I don't see it in the MP missions list. huh.gif

No it didn't make it in the final game... it would have been nice too as you could suffer through the horrible campaign with a buddy =/

No it didn't make it in the final game... it would have been nice too as you could suffer through the horrible campaign with a buddy =/

Sad but true, there's only a few missions that are actually fun to play in the campaign (there should have been far more like this) I dont know why they went with the random soldier idea instead of characters like OFP CWC and Resistance, real war is still about different characters (people) that actually have names until someday unmanned robots take over.

would of been a an excellant feature... it is not about sharing the campaign... but being able to save mp missions... to have that feature would of been bloody fantastic. This means you could run very long co-ops with friends and not have to worry about finishing in one sitting..

all you need is utilize tons of flushing scripts and this new unit switching feature etc smile_o.gif

in the end difference is just size, fragmentation, loading times and save system ...

The operative word here is campaign, cooperative play in single missions works very well and has done so since the early days of OFP. But for coop campaign games to work ArmAs focus on 'persistent games' is far from enough, it only allows a normal person, with a normal life outside of computer games, to take part in tiny isolated moments of the full campaign, as opposed to enjoying it's development from start to finish. Personally I love to play through campaigns from start to finish with the same group of friends, and if we can only play a few hours at a time and maybe weeks between sessions persistent brings nothing useful to the table for us in terms of campaigning. So saving in multiplayer is sorely needed in ArmA, even if it isn't a full featured save function that restores everything to it's exact prior state. Just being able to save a little bit of information to allow scripting to keep track of campaign progress would go a long way towards making this kind of campaigns possible, the community has done it before with OFP and will do it again if someone at BIS will just let them...

Why can't you break down the "campaign" into those "few hour" episodes? What kind of "persistant" world would you make that couldn't be made into episodes that picked up where you left off last?

A coop campaign is one of those things that people want... just because they dont have it. If BIS made it few would give a damn about it dispite how they might feel atm.

You can make a really large and complex coop mission with Arma, that will keep you busy for hours (a mini campaign of its own). You have the freedom to choose your favorite missions or a mission that suits the number of players and/or their preferences.

Something fast and small, something slow and large, something armoured, infantry, air assault, mechanised, combined, etc. A campaign might force you to play missions that arent exactly a groups favorite ones. (ex: i didnt like most armoured missions in the cwc/res campaigns).

The obvious major diference betwean a campaign and a bunch of missions is unlocking the next mission after you beat the previous but you can still make a series of missions based on the same events.

If you think a coop campaign is so important you can make it with individual, numbered, related missions and give yourselves the discipline of only playing #2 after beating #1. Saves alot of work.

Then comes the development itself, a good coop mission might take some time to make, a good SP campaign alot more (very few were actually made for OPF in all these years), a good coop campaign would problably be a pain in the *** and not worth the effort since in MP you have to take things into acount that you dont in SP editing.

Im glad BIS didnt waste time with it smile_o.gif .

Imagine a MP campaign like the Resistance one, you are a part of a guerilla group fighting the soviet invasion of your island, your team with their half working AK-47 with half a magazine each, managed after a hour of fighting in several objectives to disappear in the wilderness after seizing an important stock of weapons and ammunitions and even a BMP.

Having a MP saving feature after a mission would then save the player and his friends achievement, so the next mission could be played in the day the players would be able to find the time to gather in MP again, and would then allow this group of friends to be able to use what they succeeded to capture in the previous mission.

After playing the OFP:Resistance you can understand how great this would be if it was as possible in MP as it is in SP conditions.

of course static one can be easily split into ton of shorter coop missions ...

I can only second what Rune said and I guess everyone else in the community would enjoy the ability to "Save in Multiplayer" as well.

How to get BIS to implement that tho,thats the other question. tounge2.gif
