ArmA Progress Updates

So I was right...Using two versions of every building (damage=0 and damage =1), then disguise the transition with smoke/explosion effect!

I hope we can also make some damage=0.5 models, oh well, we will see biggrin_o.gif

I liked the new video though, i really love the smoke effects (even though they seemed the be constantly the same, i guess they havent completely finished them so they didnt add the randomness yet) smile_o.gif

What me bothered is that there didnt seem to be any crosshair sway at all when he was lying down, but it might be the simulated tripod on the mg (even though it would still move a little, after all noone has a perfectly steady hand)

If the Demo is that close, we get an official word about it soon.

I really hope that we will get the demo that soon.

I played that ambush mission many weeks before OFP came 2001.

Hmm,

Are not all those explosions mines or satchels?

Certainly looks like it.

Oblivion springs to mind where they couldn't improve the frame rate so they axed real time shadows, thined out the forest, had pop-up at a short distance and the graphics where tuned down.

Oblivion has simple flaws in engine that cause frame rate drops. For example indoors lag sometimes a lot more than outdoors (it seems culling feature is sometimes missing) and pathetic lods for foliage (hires and sprite only).

I read one of the recent interviews here and it was stated that the smoke IS finnished, but knowing BIS they'll probably improve it still further. I just hope it's not the same explosion on differant ground textures, as i can see the same smoke effect on one of the videos where boats are destroyed which looks a little odd.

Well if they still use (some kind of) the drop command then it wouldnt be very hard to implent some randomness? huh.gif

Oh well, it doesnt really bother me tounge2.gif

Quote[/b] ]Why do you try to discredit me again? Are you a bit stupid?

I was just making fun of the typical reactions less-than-amazing screen shots get from gfx obsessed gamers (aka gfx whores, not prostitutes). And yes, I guess I am a bit stupid, I simply can not deny it anymore in light of recent events. I am of course referring to ever replying to your post in the first place while I could've just passed it with a long sigh and forget I read it. I've certainly learned my lesson here so good day to you sir and my apologies if you feel that I insulted you or your contributions to the community.

From Heavy Metal to Heavy Metal.

I just understand the half of it and i'm not sure if everything is meant in a cool way. But you apology. And when you apology yourself than you probably meant everything in a way i didn't understand as well. So my apologies back. (Damn language barrier)

End the end were all on the same side and want the best for all. No reason to argue here  inlove.gif

Why is someone trying to drag me into this? I am strictly lurking till the US release.

Also in that last video u see it briefly in the end that it supposed to be released Autumn 2006, so hopefully a Demo in Sept would be sweet. Also can't imagine them not wanting to release before the Holidays get here.

Recent interview with Placebo with a norwegian gaming site.

I'll translate the parts I find most interesting (it'll be a rather quick translating, so I'm sorry for any fuckups icon_rolleyes.gif ) wink_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]How realistic will the physics of airplanes be, compared with the realism you aim for in Armed Assault? Can we expect that every plane has it's own distinct controls, and how will other vehicles behave?

The planes will have different manoeuvers depending on weight and shape. Smaller planes will be more manoeuvrable and respond faster on adjustments, while large helicopters is more laze/idle (uh, damn strange word to use IMO, dunno which word Placebo actually used whistle.gif ) and demands more planing. Other vehicles like cars and trucks will behave in the same realistic way.

(some information that I don't feel is that important...)

(...) The planes have been improved compared to Operation Flashpoint, and one thing that is easy to see from a players perspective is that it's now possible to execute acrobatic manoeuvers that give more freedom in the air. You will also notice that some helicopters have specific behaviour, that i.e makes them harder to control if their tail rotor is hit

Then he comments the wildlife and the weather and such. Not much new. Dynamic weather and such, trees/bushes/grass that move in the wind and from the downwash from choppers...

Quote[/b] ]What have you done to improve the choise of path for the AI?

We have worked a lot with the AI on many fields, and the choice of path is something we've specific discussing to find out how it can be improved. In the near future this will be implemented so the AI will react to the enviroment in a realistic manner. I.e, if a group of soldiers feel safe when moving around on the battlefield they will probably choose to follwo a path, as it's faster and more comfortable, but if they feel threatened they will leave the path and use the terrain in a more tactical manner.

Then they move on to animations...

Quote[/b] ]Can you tell us something about the animations and the details for every soldier? What improvements will we see compared to earlier games?

I'll pass this one over to Lukáš Soukenka, the Art Team Manager in Bohemia Interactives (good doding Placebo tounge2.gif ).

(Lukas then tells that all animations have been made with motion-capture and in cooperation with special agents (special forces?) from the czech army, and that some animations are still like they were in OFP. They've made is possible to sit on your knees though, and lean around corners).

(...) It's now possible to load (??? guess they mean reload...silly choice of word by the guy who translated to norwegian IMHO) the weapon the weapon while moving. We wanted to avoid bunnyjumping, so we chose to make it possible to jump only at certain places, just like climbing ladders.

The unique aimingsystem, that is based on information from reality, is like in Operation Flashpoint, but we have made the recoil more realistic. The AI (well, directly translated it's "non-playing characters"...) turn their head while following/watching interesting objects. They do this also when driving. The characters also hold their weapon in a better way. Which means, instead of one "normal" grip, every weapon now have different grips that correspond to the weapons shape.

Then there's a small section that only tells us that there will be artillery and airsupport and such.

Then there's just some information that we already know about the free movement around the island, though I just have to add the comment from Placebo: In a game tactics and choices should never be pushed down the players throat by the designer/developer. A good designer/developer pushes the player gentely through a story, a bad designer/developer pulls the player with them by the hair.

thumbs-up.gif

Placebo also tells us that it should be possible to make islands up to 40 km x 40 km...that is 1600 squad km...possible even bigger, though BIS don't know the limitation..."big shocker"...bet the community have busted limits that BIS didn't think was possible in OFP whistle.gif

Also, the editor is pretty much the same as in OFP, though ATM there's 776 scriping commands, about 400 more than in OFP 1.96 yay.gif

There will also (probably) be released a multiplayer demo, and then a singleplayer demo, but there is no current date set, since they have get a publisher...

That's basically it...

Made my day too!

Gone are the days of hands sticking through weapons and the same reload sequence for all guns yay.gif

Now, all I need to hear is that you can have an animation between shots (working the bolt on bolt action, or working a pump action shotgun) then I'm set. Animation wise that is.

The ability to climb over objects sounds sweet to (if that's what they meant by jumping in certain places).

The bolt thingy is already possible in OFP. Invasion 44 have got it on their guns using bolts.

Sounds great, I think that was the only thing that I didn't like about the video from www.armedassaults.de.

Everything else looks great considering that we know what BIS will add and/or change.

Quote[/b] ]Game convenstion is placed in Leipzig Germany, and will be held from Aug. 23th - 27th 2006. As Placebo said, we will be seeing some major improvements with Armed Assault compared to E3 this year. Moreover Placebo told a BI forum member, that a Demo will be coming out "very soon". Unfortunately, he will not indicate more precisely what "soon" means - other than it will be prior 2007.

So... Can we expect that "very soon" means SEPTEMBER ?
