GabKa73 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Searched but no thread found about this, so here it is. Quote from ofp.info: "After flashFx, llaumasky and dxdll by Kegetys we have decided to upgrade this fantastic game with the only thing that hasn't been modified or not the way we want it: high resolution textures for terrain! (the only retextured island pack we have found is based on 512x512 modified version of original textures). We are using 2048x2048 (that is the maximum size supported by the game) all new and handmade textures. we are trying to keep the environment as close as possible as the original game and this for each island. Currently, we are working on Malden, approximately 60% of the job is done for this island and we envisage to release a pack in the next weeks. The file size will be 530MB for 2048x2048 and 130MB for 1024x1024. I know that this is very big but in max resolution, the quality is very impressive for a minimal performance hit, in fact i cant see any frame rate drop with my radeon 9700pro..." http://ofp.gamezone.cz/news/pics2/Atherakhia&Symbiotretext1.jpg http://ofp.gamezone.cz/news/pics2/ather2.jpg
ag_smith 0 Posted February 9, 2005 (...)The file size will be 530MB for 2048x2048 (...) One word: overkill....!
Chip 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Yes, what's up with the size? The island looks awesome however.
blackdog~ 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Overkill is good
Wilco 944 Posted February 9, 2005 Overkill is good Very, very good. 530 is nothing.
Acecombat 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Are you crazy? I only have 512 MB Ram and OFP chokes up if i load too many addons , i already sent a EMail to BIS about this before and they told me to load less addons otherwise OFP CtD's. I wont reserve 530MB for one island thats too much. Even tonal doesnt accounts for this much and its a whole big PACK. I usually load 1GB at MOST (addons in OFP) at a time thats it, anything more leads to unstability and sluggish gameplay
Evishion 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Awesome.. i love big packs and the screenies looks ace.. for the rest.. dlled the 1024*1024 then.. was 200mb or something.. they sayd something bout it on ofp.info i think im for sure gonna get the 2048
Silent N Deadly 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Yeah it looks great. I can't wait to get my grubby mits on it.
CanadianTerror 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Catshit's desert map weighs in at 75+ MB. That's huge but worth it. 530 MB is ridiculous IMO
Silent N Deadly 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Yes that's true but they also said that there isn't a FPS drop. It might be slight, but you can't feel it. And there's also a 130 MB option too.
Jezz 0 Posted February 9, 2005 yep if you think its to big dont download it im looking forward to this alot
berghoff 11 Posted February 9, 2005 Yes, what's up with the size? The island looks awesome however. 2048x2048 takes up a lot of space. I use 1024x1024 on my new island. But 2048x2048 wow, can't wait to see it myself.
wildo 0 Posted February 9, 2005 can you show us the difference between the 2048x2048 and 1024x1024 textures please? Wildo
Cpt. FrostBite 0 Posted February 9, 2005 It looks impressive, but for a ground texture I'm not sure if this looks right. I think it looks strange with those high-res textures and not-so-high-res units. Could still be nice, but than you shouldn't use the default trees, which are a bit ugly. Take a look at Kumlinge for the right vegetation.
benu 1 Posted February 9, 2005 I love eye candy and would give it a try. And 530mb is not really much, there a greater packs around, so let everyone decide for themselves if the download is worth it.
sanctuary 19 Posted February 9, 2005 While waiting for those huge textures to be released, you can always install FatWombat retextures of Everon, Malden, Kolgujev and Desert Island. Easy to install while keeping a reasonnable download size and totally compatible with all the existing missions/campaigns, as they introduce no new objects (so no ID changes) And they looks really good (plus are not killing that much your system ressource). GabKa73 0 Posted February 9, 2005 Never seen ground textures like this in OFP before. I want to see it in game and decide then if it was worth it. to fatwombat textures: They look nice, but they don't impress me like that. The other thing is, they always look nice from distance, even the old originals from BIS.
Commando84 0 Posted February 9, 2005 wow sounds impressive can't wait to try this, can show some friends the beatiful graphics in ofp then and combined with other mods.... I just wanna get new ram memory to my 512 mb up to 1 gig... then i could load all ofp addons and mods at same time and have those extreme cti's or combined arms missions
Dwarden 1125 Posted February 10, 2005 for that size i really hope You will use 7z archive ( http://www.7-zip.org ) lol
MrZig 0 Posted February 10, 2005 Wow this is breath-takingly brilliant. 530 megs bring it on!
shinRaiden 0 Posted February 11, 2005 Please, what every you do, pack it so that it can be patched easily, and don't bundle the map and textures together. Kepp them seperate. And make it a bittorrent too.
benu 1 Posted February 11, 2005 While waiting for those huge textures to be released, you can always install FatWombat retextures of Everon, Malden, Kolgujev and Desert Island. I already do use FatWombats Textures Thats why i will give these a try too and most probably keep using them. But when you d/l the FW textures, make sure you get the corrected version, or you will have missing textures with some other islands...
theavonlady 2 Posted February 11, 2005 But when you d/l the FW textures, make sure you get the corrected version, or you will have missing textures with some other islands... Sactuary's link points to the corrected version.
