bonko the sane 2 Posted October 7, 2004 5 years ago i stop smoking, first 2 weeks were not good but then it was much easier than i thought, then 4 months later i got extremely drunk and smoked 2 packets in that night...havent stopped smoking since  the good thing about it is that i stopped drinking from that day on, and i consider my drinking\drugging far deadlier than my smoking,  therefore, at the moment ill stick with the caffeine\nicotine combo, hopefullly better days will come and ill quit smoking, but as it stands, ill never quit coffee
Blake 0 Posted October 7, 2004 In a bar or party cigarettes and beer make a bit too tasteful combination to resist after a few drinks. I try to resist the temptation to the last but eventually end up buying a pack even thouh the hangover is multiplied by two   I guess I am an occasional smoker. shinRaiden 0 Posted October 7, 2004 I got a used textbook last quarter and it stank so bad I couldn't be within 1m of it and not have massive pounding headaches. Anyway, I've got some friends who have quit, and here's some suggestions: 1) Have something for your fingers to play with or chew on. A pack of pens or such would work. There's the psychological habit of having something just so in your fingers and mouth. 2) One gag a friend and I made that seemed to work was that we made what looked like a pack and filled it with rolled up notes colored to look like cigarettes. It fit the friend's shirt pocket just right, and when he'd reach for a light, he'd get a friendly reminder. 3) Some prefer cold turkey, some prefer weaning. Both require a buddy, unless you're severely macho. You'll still have odor residue around your place, car, clothes, and stuff, even a little bit even if you were a stickler about going outside. Open the windows, get some ventilation, and do some deep cleaning. Not only will it help purge you, it will reduce the memory-jarring residue and give you something else to concentrate on. Congrats and good luck.

Bernadotte 0 Posted October 7, 2004 Good luck, brgnorway!! When I quit in 2000, I found it helped to keep a fresh unopened pack in the fridge rather than completely emptying the place of tobacco, lighters and ashtrays. It's an ego thing. If they're totally out of reach then the decision not to smoke has been somewhat removed from you, which reduces the sense of accomplishment.
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted October 7, 2004 Started when I was 16. Enjoyed most of my cigarettes and had the best nights and the best  discussions together with friends while smoking and drinking. I tried to quit in the past and I was able to do it without side effects. But it just gets boring going out on the weekend and not being able to smoke. I would have no problem not to smoke before 6:00pm or not to smoke for the entire day. But there are moments that are made for a good cigarette and I bet the Marlboro man enjoyed his life even if it was quite short. I mean have you ever been to a non-smoking bar? Boring! Boring as hell! The women that go to non-smoking bars generally have no charisma and a reduced amount of humour.  Besides, non smokers to me are kind of boring anyway. Who never tried it is too disciplined in my eyes!  However I strictly defend the rights of Non-smokers. I hated the smokers in trains and planes. After a few seconds passing through the smokers area your clothes already smell like a chimney. But why is it forbidden to smoke in an open space area?  How could that molest other people? At my age generally people start to quit and we have no problem accepting that nor do they have a problem when we smoke. Quitting is good but it is NOT a decision of life and death or to change from evil to good. It is simply: "I had enough, they dont taste anymore!" redface 1 Posted October 7, 2004 non-smoker, almost non-drinker, but I am severly in need of another thread "Have you ever tried quitting ofp?" but thanks for the advice, I will try putting my CD in the fridge
Heatseeker 0 Posted October 7, 2004 I know people that smoke 2 or more packs of very strong cigarretes a day, my body simply cant accept more than a pack of light cigarretes, i may try to reduce to 10 ciggies a day but i dont feel ready to quit at the time and i wont be putting packs of cigarretes in the fridge. I also started drinking at early age and i may admit that at the time it wasnt a very healthy nor smart thing to do but theres a diference betwean drinker and alcoholic, i enjoy the ocasional beer atack with some friends or at meals only . Akira 0 Posted October 7, 2004 Oh yeah. My reason for quiting. I had mulled it about in my mind for some time, and my wife was encouraging me to quit. So when we went to Hawaii, with its pristine beauty and rather "athletic" people and activities, I decided right then I didn't want to smoke anymore. Felt like I was spoiling Hawaii and myself, so I quit, started exercising, and now I'm in rather good shape. Whenever I have a craving for a cig, I ignore it or hit the gym and work it out. Gadger 0 Posted October 7, 2004 Sometimes I want to quit, but then theres the late night cig's where I can take 5-10 mins to myself looking up at the stars and relax. I've tried to cut it down to just that, but the temptation to "light up" in a bar, club or football match is just too high. It's also kinda hard for me to resist when I know I gotta walk for longer than 30 mins, having a cig seems to break the journey up. I wanna quit so bad, but at the moment I just haven't got the will power to do so.

brgnorway 0 Posted October 7, 2004 Quote[/b] ] You mean appelation Grand Cru Classé, it is eeeeeee not aeeeeee Hehe you evil man I'll never quit the clarets though - after all I'm a proud man and none can take that away from me Oh, I just wanted to say that all the good reasons for smoking that you Albert and the rest have brought forward are the things that makes smoking worth it - however, I'm not comfortable with it anymore, possibly because the negative aspects of smoking outweighs the joy of smoking. So, I'm feeling much better now.

Badgerboy 0 Posted October 7, 2004 I started smoking when I was 17, and I'm now 23. I quit about 6 months ago as I was exercising quite alot and it was impairing my performance. Started back up again 2 weeks ago as I started a diet, and found I was always hungry. Result - 1 + 1/4 stone loss of weight in 2 weeks . (I suppose the dialy intake of only 10grams of fat helped as well (Recommended is 95g) It's the ultimate weight loss plan, but I suppose I might quit again when I'm down to my desired weight, and do a bit more exercise to keep it in check. I like smoking, but those 6 months were good in the fact that my sense taste and smell increased, and I saved a small fortune.... which I then spent on beer And ~Denior is correct, I love my 5 mins smoking breaks when I'm in work. When I quit, the working day was one long bore.

BoweryBaker 0 Posted October 7, 2004 I never really took to smoking cigarettes. Â The first time I smoked anything it was weed. Â I tried cigarettes but they choke me and burn my mouth so i hate it. Â Plus the taste is horrible. Â Weed is something else. Â Sometimes its very minty, it makes you feel happy, its easy on your mouth, doesn't burn at all unless the fire is really hot, but aside from that much better. Â Alcohol ive never been addicted to either. Â I only drink wine, not beer or anything fermented. Â Its against my religion but its just a matter of personal taste for me. Â Beer doesn't taste like any fruits or anything healthy so i don't like it. Â Wine is often fruity. Â I've quit both weed and alcohol for extended periods of time out of both want and necessity, up to for a year and a half I think. Â When I made new friends who were into both weed and alcohol, I was so alone and wanted to kick it or hang out so badly that i just went back to it, and will often purchase it for the occassion of a party or a get together since it mellows the mood out and keeps everyone satisfied and stimulates thought so everyone will be talking about stuff, non addictive like the other hard drugs or street drugs. Â So there you have it. Â So contrary to popular belief I believe that weed is actually healthier than cigarettes and much more satisfying. Â The undercovers are everywhere though so its not easy to enjoy. Â One must use caution in choosing where to smoke. Â The police usually won't mess with you if you're not selling it by the pounds and pounds. Â If you only got like a little bit, they'll just take it away from you most of the time, like one time i had an ounce taken away from me. Â They like to look like heroes so they'll bust the ones who got crazy weight like 400 pounds just to send a message. Â If you grow it they'll come after you too. Â The government is so stupid about it...but i can't change that. The only ones who have a problem with weed are the ones who haven't smoked it before and they make themselves look like dumbasses with all their scientific facts and no experience. Winters 1 Posted October 7, 2004 I have been a non-smoker for 5 years now and i have no temptation to smoke anymore even when people are smoking around me. The hardest thing after i quit was going into a pub, i would always have a pint in one hand and a smoke in the other so it took a while to get over that. -33ker 0 Posted October 7, 2004 I sometimes smoke, but only when combined with a big amount of alcohol. I prefer Dannemann Moods, Schwarzer Krauser and red Gauloises (yes, the French make good cigarrettes! ). But I wouldn't say that I'm addicted to anything. I'm trying to live a healthy as possible lifestyle, but sometimes I poison my body with nicotine and alcohol. I never spend anything on cigarettes, because my friends allways give me some of theirs.
