Doom 3 has gone GOLD!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Doom can be an excelent game for guys about under 18 or something.I am a bit older now and have other exceptations of games ,but i know if i would be 16 now i would love a game like Doom.

Mind you ,like the original Quake ,it can be probably scary and tense as hell for young guys.I know that when i played Quake at high difficulty levels when i was 16 that game sure scared me ,even became mentally stressfull ,beginning to transpirate and all.If doom can be as hard as the original Quake was then it might be fun for some players.

Not a game that i would play now with my current preference's ,but i can expect that for certain players this will be a wonderfull game.

However ,atmosphere and difficulty will be important facets.

Yes, Wolf3d was the first.

Catacomb 3D was before Wolf 3D ;)

You may or may not be surprised how few people know about 'Catacomb 3D'.

Cap.

the catacomb game was kinda boring iirc..

Blake Stone anyone rock.gifsmile_o.gif

me wonders if doom requires even more juice than far cry crazy_o.gif

Id Software CEO, Todd Hollenshead, recently had an interview with HomeLAN; discussing various rumors and information relevant to Doom. One thing discussed, was the possibility of a Doom movie:

"HomeLAN - What can you tell us, if anything, about the status of the proposed Doom movie?

Todd Hollenshead - The script is continually being tweaked, but it's close to being final and we think it's great. Warner Bros. is getting close to running out of their option time, so they will either decide to make a big commitment to the movie soon or we'll be back on the free agent market with the rights. I know several of the other studios would absolutely love to get a second chance to work with us on the DOOM movie."

Let me be one of the first to say it's about time. I have been a fan of the Doom franchise since it's release 10 years ago.

Too bad the game is nothing special.

Unless it's absolutely nothing like the leaked alpha.

Which once you got past the graphics played pretty much like a really fancy looking quake... which is just an absurd death sentence to any ambience the game might have.

Scary games give me nightmares. I can't play that and keep my sanity. War and realism I can handle but not otherworldly crap. I'd be losing tons of sleep.

Well... See, I'm not really talking about that. I'm talking about the overall feel of the gameplay. Even if the monsters aren't scary, I see it as a tremendous waste of time or an endeavor to appeal to really shallow gamers to make a game that incorporates state of the art graphics, but still retains the general gameplay concept of the original. You take a million bullets, the ai is nothing tremendously special. Mostly it's the scripted events where they look the most "intelligent".

And I just can't get over the "quakish" movement of the player. You basically run through the levels "deathmatching" ai monsters. Your player isn't subject to any particular human like vulnerabilities or movement limitations, which I think would have really kicked up the suspense aspect.

As it is. It was interesting for all of a few minutes... then it was just boring and... well Doom/Quake all over again.

I find that game to be -far- more immersive than Doom 3 was. It may be unfair to compare the alpha to a finished game, but seriously. The graphics weren't as good, but it had the right atmosphere.

Mmm, SS2 with Doom 3 engine... biggrin_o.gif That would be something! I can't be motivated to replay SS2 when that Rebirth graphics project died...or did it? I can't find the page any more. The first version with new Hybrids, androids, spiders and corpses was released, so that's better than nothing I guess.

right so you have played the full game then  rock.gif you can hardly compare the highly untuned alpha to the full product, which unless you write for PC Gamer you probally only played the alpha a year ago or more ago.

-edit- PS i don't think you get the DOOM series do you?

Sounds great, but

Quote[/b] ]It seems like every hot new 3D engine that comes down the pike, somebody starts an SS2 port project for it.

And they've all died.

Sadly, I believe him.

The Doom series is older then Quake, so you should be moving ''doomish'' in Quake instead of the other way around wink_o.gif

lol, all i said was that the only way to know how Doom3 played and write in the 1st person as though he had played it was either a Magazine writer and had a review copy or he had played an early alpha.

it's hardly a discussion rather more like stating fact, but yea whatever i was not even going down that road a tad premptive if you ask me. rock.gif

I'm not saying you did, I just quoted you, and you had that article in it, and when I removed stuff from it, it seemed you wrote it, sorry about my bad editing skills tounge_o.gif

From what I can see on screenshots, Doom3's engine effects look better then HL2.... rock.gif

System Shock 1 remake using the doom 3 engine would be great... SShock 2 is still new enough to work fine on modern systems (supports 3D acceleration etc) so I dont think its worth a remake just yet. imo. Shock 1 is a much better game anyway, though shock 2 is very good too but in a different way.

Yes, but looks aren't everything  wink_o.gif

HL2 will be far better off as an all-around engine then Doom 3
