But she also knows where the line is and doesn't cross it too far to the other side, unlike other people who do get perm banned, while she may have her faults and be rather annoying at times she has that to her credit (as well as the splendid FAQ of course, excusing that horrible sound it makes).

BraTTy - OT is the same as anywhere else in here, covered by the same rules. Tracy_t was someone who had been perm banned under a previous account, normally we spot them quicker so they don't get entrenched, this one took us a little longer.

So, Placebo ol' pal, ol' buddy, will you restore my 830,000 post count that Ralph has been transfering to his secret Swiss account over the last two years?

Not true. With 26667 members and 365.25 days per year, there's an average of 73 members per day celebrating their birthday.

Hmm, totally lost how to do this, maybe like this:

0/26667 + 364/26667 = 0,0136

that's a bit over 1%, and that has to be mulitiplide by the chance no event has been scheduled tounge_o.gif

A lot of members don't have details of their birthday in their info so that will have an impact.

I'm unpininning these two threads, consider it a final step before they're closed completely and we decide to stop all such debates if necessary. Behaviour in these threads is at times disgraceful, if you can't keep it civil then don't pos

Obviously a bad and short-sighted idea. The reason why these threads were pinned in the first place was because those two topics are the most active on the whole board. New posters should be able to spot them, to prevent posting duplicate threads. And the introduction of two unified threads was also to prevent every little bit of news being posted several times a day in separate threads.

As for the serious posts/flaming ratio, it has undoubtably the best record of all times. If people behaved as nicely as they do in those two threads, there would be no need for moderators.

The problem is that some moderators have no interest in politics and don't understand the point of these discussions. Well, that's too bad, but it very much falls within the topics approved by BIS. I think it's sad that people who play military games aren't interested in the broader aspects of war, but that is their prerogative. It does not however give them the right to prevent others from discussing it.

It's bad moderating since there's a personal bias involved, rather than objective evaluation.

denoir, get real, nobody is preventing anyone from partaking in a discussion. Stop thinking in extremes and look at it a bit more pragmatic smile_o.gif

You of all people should be fully aware that if people can remain civil with each other then there wouldn't be a problem with the threads. They constantly get personal, the discussions achieve nothing constructive, this is first and foremost a computer game forum, anything beyond that is a luxury not a necessity or a right.

I used to say the same thing, but I now think that those two threads really serve to educate some members on what's really going on. I personally always look forward to seeing some of the analysis/viewpoints posted there on current events. It also aids in facts analysis, as posts remain for months/years and there is no way of people ingoring facts for long if they can be referenced back. smile_o.gif

Basically I am trying to say that those threads may be the most beneficial to all members, and probably keep a lot of people coming back ot the forums too.

People are more civil per post then they are in the other threads. I made statistics on that, remember? OT is actually the least moderated forum per post. If you need to refresh your memory, I'd be more than happy to post the statistics here. We have had three Iraq threads with 300x15 posts in each and there have been overall a dozen or so post restrictions. That's nothing compared for instance to Addons & Mods.

Quote[/b] ]They constantly get personal, the discussions achieve nothing constructive

This is absolutely not true. Tell me Paul, how often do you check the Iraq thread? Once a day? Once a week? Once a month? Do you check it at all except for when Ralph or another moderator posting there finds something objectionable and notifies you?

Quote[/b] ]this is first and foremost a computer game forum, anything beyond that is a luxury not a necessity or a right.

Indeed it is, but it's a luxury given to us by BIS, not by you and cerainly not depening on if you enjoy political debates or not.

You know I'm the last person who would in public criticise your moderating. You are IMO a very good moderator but in case of political discussions, you've always had a bias against them. Normally this is balanced out by the views of the other moderators, but apparently not this time. You're letting your pesonal lack of appreciation of the value of the threads to affect your moderating. If you look at the facts though, you'll see that it's only bad for the forums. You'll just end up with more work.

Overall, you must agree that 99% of the posts in the threads are serious and civil. When I left the policy was still individual punishment rather than collective.

How's this for a compromise:

Leave the threads pinned for now and assign a willing moderator (like Ralph) to watch over the threads. At the first sign on any flaming or namecalling, come down hard on the offender. Try this for a while and if it doesn't help, unpin or lock the threads temprorarily or permanently.

The only bias I have against political discussion is that for whatever reason some people cannot partake in them without getting personal/abusive/flaming/flame baiting, we've managed to get rid of that kind of atmosphere from 99% of the forum, political discussions are the one area where they crop up, whether once a week, once a month, whatever, it's more than enough.

Are we talking about the same forums?  rock.gif As I said, OT is one of the least moderated forums. IIRC only Mission Editing has a better record. If you wish, I can post the statistics here (up until May), but I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to post that information in public. You decide.

Or if you want to go at it another way check how many entries in the ban list you have for the Iraq threads and compare it to the roughly 20,000 overall posts made. The same goes for the Mid East thread. You'll see that it is at least ten times as good as the average Addons & Mods thread.

Sure, topics such as general may be more moderated, but thats mainly because they get locked and moved. That on the other hand is mainly because new people tend to post there more frequently. And not because of some flamers/spammers.

Trust me being one, i know where i put my spam/flames  tounge_o.gif
