New EDEN update makes font look disgusting...

Recommended Posts

Old font clearer. Symbols can be easily distinguished. New font much blurred, assymetric, condensed. They can be hardly read. I had to strain my eyes to read it. Game is no fun anymore. Words look like big blurred spots.

It must be something to do with resolutions/settings as some of have it crisp and easy to read.

Can you please post your settings? Screen resolution, A3 resolution, interface size and other settings that might affect this?

I think the problem is in the font. You may open uifonts_f_data.pbo and check paa files, for example, *10*.paa files (I believe that mean font size = 10). And you will find the same blurriness and assymetry. Just compare any Purista with the equial Robato.

P. S. My settings https://mega.nz/#!rA0VDRSB!_Q6BRp0Bnwn0f8oJ7YMX3NMbX_cHNRBe26TVhgVEybs(switched to English)

Interesting. So if you change UI size it will get better? How do the other *x*.paa look like?

Yes, with bigger UI size it looks better but even with it, you may found the same problems.

Looks fine on my laptop at 1366 x768 everything is readable, also on latest devbuild.

Don't you think you're being a tad hyperbolic when you say the game isn't playable due to the fonts? ;)

Maybe a little but I haven't played since 1.56, just launches for tests.

The readability of this new font is very bad.

Im have a hard time reading text i think  Its to stretched.

Even your side selection menu when joining a server is having a hard time showing up the lines are ultra thin.

Well isn't there always ?It's Arma-tagline should be "There's a mod for that". Personally I like the new font and it looks good on my TV-I use a 40inch Sony Bravia @ 1920x1080

Nice... another TV user... it looks good for me too. 1920 x 1080 on a 55" Samsung. Small interface size. Maybe overall screen size is a problem?

I use small interface size too. I doubt the issue is screen size-I think far more people would be having problems if that was the case. A lot of people use monitors of 19 inches-including almost all laptops.

That makes sense... been a while since I gamed on a laptop.

Honestly, ive looked at some of the screenshots from people who say they cant read it and i dont see an issue... likely time for me to bow out of the whole discussion ;) and go play...

Poppin smoke and retreating to Altis....

I agree with all the positives on here.Present font far better than the previous one which had my eyes bloodshot after every game. What he said:

I like the new font. It's more readable and the characters are spaced better.

I guess it's all a matter of preference.

And I'm just grateful to have this new tool..without bugs finally.

A step back, text is aliased now.

Hi dwarden,

I changed nothing since yesterday so I thought its ok to report it in the shortest possible way :D

-1920x1200 monitor

-1920x1200 ingame resolution

-19:10 aspect ratio

-100% sampling rate

-8x aa ingame

-cmaa ingame

-font size: small

amd latest driver, all default, win 10-64bit.

Generally it is worth checking if aspect ratio corresponds to the resolution in Video Options. If not, it may cause not only the fonts, but whole game render blurry. Guess in your case the 19:10 is only a typo in the post and you use 16:10.

Sorry to disagree with you, but anti-aliasing is applied to the new font as well, see

I find the problem to be three things, one which is technical and two design decisions.

The technical issue is the bad kerning which causes awkward spacing between letters. For example the word "Scenario" looks like "Scen ario" in the Eden editor menu and dropdown due to this problem.

The above issue combined with the condensed nature of the font and the general "lighter" appearance of the font make words harder to distinguish and any slightly longer text harder to read.

I understand that the condensed version gives you more room to fit more text in smaller areas and avoids having to tweak the UI itself, but, eh, I'm just another person "raging about the new font".

The font of the main menu is ok for me. Only if I open a menu text is aliased. Not a big thing, thats true..

The new font looks just fine on my rig, does it not look like this for everyone else?  1920x1080 Small interface size

ltbOXKz.jpg

Please note that the font in Main Menu or EDEN editor is different from the base font used in game. To make it clear:

  • Base font: Roboto Condensed
  • Titles: Purista Medium
  • Sub-headings: Roboto Condensed Light
  • Buttons: Purista Light
  • EDEN editor: Roboto Condensed Light

There were changes in the font rendering tech. that improved spacing and kerning of the fonts a lot. While not completely perfect, the font still renders pretty close to the original (image uses the same size as in EDEN Editor):

The original font was very good, nothing wrong with it, it was crisp, modern and easy to read and made the game feel very slick.

19", 1280x1024, Normal UI size

Font looks horrible. All text is too blurred and condensed (text readability is worse than in 1.54), check screenshot, underlined the most ugly symbols . The only text that looks ok is main menu text on start screen. Cannot play Arma because of new font.

Even if it may not be obvious on the first glance, the original font had certain flaws. There were many complaints about readability, especially when using small and very small interface size (symbols like: a, 8, 6 being hard to recognize etc).

I'm sorry, but can't see any problems in the attached screenshots. Moreover http://i.imgur.com/JnfHkHK.png proves that letters of the new font are better readable than the old one.

A font is either good or it's not. You can't get used to a font.

Yes and No. Getting used to it, does help to some extend.

The "roboto" font is very well known and widespread. It's a bit far fetched to call it a "bad font".

It is actually a very good font but the way it is used ingame is a bit unfortunate.

For example: I really don't consider it to be very suitable for the action menu. (at least at small sizes)

The spacing is a bit too low which makes it hard to read the small text in the action menu at a glance.

They should've probably used the "light 300" variant instead of the regular 400 one.

It's of no question that the old font had it's flaws. The 5/6/8-problem was an issue right from the beginning. But the spacing of the letters in certain circumstances (especially the addAction-menu, the mouse-over tooltips in the main menu, the mission selection list in MP etc.) is'nt an improvement.

I'll bite and "rage some more".

I've seen the first iteration of the ingame kerning of Roboto, I agree, it was much worse. As for the picture, surely you can see what I'm talking about? Kerning of the in-game one looks much worse than the original one, the font lost it's "crispness" and became somewhat blurry, even the individual glyphs lost their shape. "S" got a tail, back of the "c" is no longer flat, back of the "e" is no longer flat, "n" got squished, "r" lost the dip at the connecting point, "o" somehow became rounder, etc. The overlay, it's not representative of the difference, as it's approximately the same as having a 10cm white circle covered by a 20cm red circle and saying they're the same because no white can be seen. Besides, at that size, single pixel can change appearance and readability of a character drastically. And I suppose, yes, we can skip the discussion about design decisions in regards to using the condensed light font.

As far as the comments at the old font go in regards to a few characters being quite similar. I'll agree that was the case, but tweaking a few font glyphs would've made much more sense.

Anyway, thanks for your time.

I have to agree with the action menu. It just isn't as readable as before.

I also don't like the new numbers. The old font had that modern digital feeling that fit the game perfectly. Current numbers (or even some letters just like the ABC pic shows) are just too round and looking.

I'm telling you it's the spacing/kerning not the font. The image below is the same word but with better spacing. You can try for yourself here http://typecast.com/preview/google/Roboto%20Condensed. Select some text, hit the VA button on the top right, then play with the spacing in the advanced properties window.

No font is legible when the letters are jammed together!
